NATIONAL TORTELLINI DAY

Pasta lovers will enjoy a traditional stuffed pasta during National Tortellini Day on February 13th!

Tortellini is a signature dish from the Italian region of Bologna, where they claim to have created this stuffed pasta packed with flavor. Ravioli, tortellini, and tortellacci are all part of the same family of stuffed pasta. The most common fillings for tortellini are ham, white meat, and Parmesan cheese.

Members of an organization called The Learned Order of the Tortellini in the city of Bologna wear special hats to their meetings that are red and gold and shaped like tortellini. They also wear a ribbon, around their neck that has a gold tortellini hanging on it. The Learned Order of the Tortellini has a large membership dedicated to the preservation of the traditional tortellini.

There are many ways to prepare a tortellini dish. You may want to top it with a cheese sauce, cream sauce, pesto or tomato sauce, or follow one of the thousands of cooking blogs available for a great tortellini recipe.

Community Office Hours (COH) is intended to provide an opportunity to discuss issues within the community and give residents the opportunity for direct dialogue with City staff about interests and concerns. This program enables City Hall to be accessible and helpful to more residents within neighborhoods. This effort supports a two-way street of effective communication and information flow for addressing neighborhood-level issues.

Your liaison will be available to assist you in your district, Monday through Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you have any questions or concerns and would like to book an appointment for assistance, please visit nola.gov/coh or give us a call at (504) 658-4985.

New synthetic skin may unlock blood-sucking secrets of mosquitoes

Mosquitoes feed on blood-infused synthetic skin, a design that could make it easier for researchers to study disease transmission. (Image by Tulane University)

One by one, mosquitoes are captured by a handheld vacuum and released into a clear plastic box. After taking a moment to adjust to their new surroundings, the mosquitoes smell blood and swarm to the source.

But instead of finding a creature to feast on, they buzz toward a vessel of scarlet blood flowing under a small square of clear synthetic skin and begin to feed.

This is not the stuff of science fiction, but a research partnership between Tulane and Rice universities to see if gelatin-like patches of fake skin – called hydrogels – are the future of studying how mosquitoes transmit deadly diseases and which repellents are most effective. Hydrogels eliminate the need for human and animal testing to answer such questions.

The hydrogels are already in use at Tulane University’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, where the insectary produces more than 1,000 mosquitoes a week and a 3D printer creates hydrogels. Rice University bioengineers developed the hydrogel material and a machine-learning software that analyzes video of feeding mosquitoes to identify patterns.

In new research published in Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, the hydrogels were found to create a more consistent environment for mosquito testing regardless of species. Testing showed that both DEET and plant-based repellents made from lemon eucalyptus oils were effective in repelling the mosquitoes, while mosquitoes fed eagerly on the hydrogels without repellent.

“It’s a huge game changer,” said Dawn Wesson, associate professor of tropical medicine at Tulane’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. “If we can study how they (mosquitoes) feed, what they do in the process of feeding, we can better understand their potential for transmitting diseases and possibly do things to stop them from feeding.”

More than a nuisance, mosquitoes are perhaps the world’s most dangerous animal. They are vectors for deadly diseases such as malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, Zika and yellow fever. Mosquito-borne diseases are responsible for approximately 725,000 deaths each year, according to the World Health Organization.

Studying mosquito feeding has long posed a challenge as the use of live mice and humans can be costly and inconsistent. By being able to efficiently produce hydrogels with different blood vessel patterns, Wesson said the ability to study the mechanics of disease transmission and test new types of repellents has increased exponentially. Each testing chamber is outfitted with cameras which record the mosquitoes’ feeding patterns. Artificial intelligence is used to track and sort common bite locations and how long it takes to feed.

While mosquito saliva is thought to play a crucial role in disease transmission, questions remain about the process.

“If we can study that process in a more fine-scaled way without having to use animals, we can potentially interrupt transmission, and that would have a very large impact,” Wesson said. “We’re just starting to scratch the surface of what we can do with this product.”

Omid Veiseh, the study’s corresponding author and an assistant professor of bioengineering in Rice’s George R. Brown School of Engineering, said the hydrogel system can be scaled up to test or discover new repellents, study mosquito behavior more broadly and open the door for testing in labs that couldn’t previously afford it.

“It provides a consistent and controlled method of observation,” Veiseh said. “The hope is researchers will be able to use that to identify ways to prevent the spread of disease in the future.”

NOPD to Distribute Identification Bracelets During Mardi Gras

New Orleans, LA-Members of the New Orleans Police Department’s Community Engagement Unit are ramping up to keep our kids safe this Mardi Gras season.

Mardi Gras is a busy time of the year in New Orleans. The lights, big floats, and large crowds can be exciting for young children. During this time, it's very important for parents to keep a close watch on their children.

The ID bracelets are another way for parents to ensure safety for their children while enjoying the Mardi Gras festivities. Each bracelet is reusable and will last throughout the Mardi Gras Season.

If the child is lost for any reason, law enforcement officers can immediately contact parents with the information on the bracelet.

February 13 and 26 Programming Announced

Phillips will provide an overview of the birth and growth of gay krewes from the 1950s to today as well as traditions that laid the groundwork for the formation of these krewes.

Doors will open at 5:30pm with the presentation beginning at 6:00pm. Free for museum members, $5 for nonmembers. Pre-purchase is recommended due to space limitations. Visit www.bkhouse.org for tickets and more information.

On Sunday, February 26 at 6:00pm, John Boutte brings Music from the American Songbook to BK House in a special concert featuring guitarist Caleb Tokarska and bassist Nobumasa Ozaki. In this performance, the trio will explore the diversity of the American songbook, ranging from New Orleans jazz, blues, gospel, R&B, and Americana. Boutte is a renowned New Orleans musician who became known worldwide when his song became the theme song for the very popular post-Katrina HBO TV show, Treme.

Doors open at 5:30 pm; the concert begins promptly at 6 pm.  Light refreshments will be served; however, this is a Bring Your Own Beverage event. Guests are encouraged to bring extra cups with their beverage of choice. Tickets are $30 for BK House members and $40 for non-members and should be pre-purchased at www.bkhouse.org.

The return to the traditional parade routes means New Orleans Krewes and their riders are adding to their orders to ensure they have ample supplies of Mardi Gras throws and time-honored treasures, according to carnival/party supply expert Alyssa Fletchinger Higgins, vice president of Plush Appeal – The Mardi Gras Spot.

The family-owned store is seeing increased demand for plush and light up throws, novelty, glass and recycled beads of all kinds, since the announcement by the city that parades will return to full-routes, said Fletchinger.

“There has been so much excitement overall for Mardi Gras 2023, perhaps because carnival seems back in full force,” Fletchinger said. “News on the routes have krewes and riders stocking up on those little something extras.”

NATIONAL CHEDDAR DAY

National Cheddar Day adds some cheesy goodness on February 13th!

Grilled cheese would be buttered bread without melt-able slices piled high; burgers would be lackluster without a perfect ooze; mac & cheese would just be…mac, to be frank. So many of our iconic American dishes simply wouldn’t be the same without a slice of cheddar’s deliciousness.

CHEDDAR HISTORY

There’s some history to this love of cheddar as well. How exactly did cheddar become a staple in so many of our favorite foods? Let us tell you!

Cheddar first rolled into being in the village of Cheddar in Somerset, England in the 12th century. While cheddar accounts for more than a third of all the cheese sold in the United States, it is a royal hit in the United Kingdom where it was created. In fact, more than half of the cheese sales in the UK go to cheddar.

In 1894, renowned cheesemaker Peter McIntosh brought his cheese-making skills to Tillamook County, Oregon where it rains a lot and the grass was always green. He taught the locals all he knew, and in due time he earned himself the nickname “Cheese King of the Coast.” Today, there are more cows than people in Tillamook, and those local farmers have since formed the farmer-owned cooperative we know today as the Tillamook County Creamery Association.

No wonder cheddar finds its way into so many recipes or a simple snack. That rich, creamy and sometimes crumbly flavor is what keeps us coming back for more, bite after delicious bite.

Derby Gisclair

Founded by James H. Caldwell in 1835, the St. Charles Theatre was the successor to the St. Philip Street Theatre (1820 - 1822) and the Camp Street Theatre (1822 - 1835) as the only English language theatre in New Orleans. Caldwell had successfully owned and operated these venues in the American Sector at various times but was also responsible for bringing gas lighting to the city.

Pictured here in 1864 by W.D. MacPherson, the St. Charles Theatre was located at 426 St. Charles Avenue between Poydras Street and Commercial Alley. Like many structures in the city, the theatre burned in 1842, was rebuilt only to burn again and be rebuilt again.

In the late 1870s Caldwell sold the theatre to David Bidwell and two others and remained in operation until 1967. It was one of several buildings demolished to make way for the InterContinental Hotel and Pan American Life Insurance complex.

Bidwell and his partners also operated the Academy of Music just a few doors down from the St. Charles Theatre, the Phoenix House, the American Champion Circus Company, and several theatres located in St. Louis, Memphis and Mobile.

JEFFERSON, LA – NOLA Gold Rugby, in partnership with the Jefferson Parish, will be kicking-off the 2023 season in true Louisiana fashion, with a pre-match Mardi Gras Festival on Friday, February 17, 2023 at the Shrine on Airline (6000 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA 70003). From the tailgate area, fans will be able to join in on a second line that will proceed from the tailgate area, onto the field and into the stands. To end the night, there will be a firework show after the ending of the game.

NOLA on Tap Returns

Yeah You Right Events tabbed to bring back Louisiana’s Largest Beer Festival

New Orleans, LA. – NOLA on Tap, the beloved beer festival in support of the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LASPCA), will return to the festival calendar in 2023.

Yeah You Right Events, a new partnership between Top Taco and Food Fight producer Shane Finkelstein and restaurateur and Cinco de Mayo Fest producer Oscar Chimal, will take charge of the popular homebrew and craft beer festival. While some changes will be in store for NOLA on Tap, the LASPCA will remain sole beneficiary of the event.

Top Taco and Food Fight have become can’t-miss food festivals in the city. Yeah You Right Events aims to make NOLA on Tap look more like those events while still retaining many of the features that made it one of the largest beer festivals in the country.

Homebrewers will still battle it out for coveted awards and top-notch live musical acts will still grace the stages, but NOLA on Tap will now be a 21 and over ticketed event, and move from City Park on the fall calendar to Lafreniere Park on March 18th, 2023 from 2pm-7pm.

“We really wanted to take NOLA on Tap out of hurricane season,” said event producer Shane Finkelstein. “We love Lafreniere Park for the type of events that we do and its proximity to the city. It really is the perfect venue for medium-sized festivals.”

Other changes will include an all-inclusive ticket package for beer-lovers and a VIP Experience that will include a crawfish boil, open bar, signature beers, lounge seating, private restrooms, and additional food and entertainment.

Early bird tickets will start at $10 for “Designated Drivers” and $35 for unlimited beer samples, while all-inclusive VIP tickets will start at $95 and end up at $125 at the gate.

“We are so excited to have Yeah You Right Events bring back NOLA on Tap,” says CEO of the LASPCA, Ana Zorrilla. “We couldn’t have asked for a better group to bring it back after a 3 year-long hiatus.”

When NOLA on Tap was conceived back in 2009, Abita Brewing was the only brewery in Louisiana. Today, there are over 40 breweries in the state and dozens more around the Gulf Coast. The goal of Yeah You Right Events is to have every local and regional brewery represented at this year’s festival.

“From Gnarly Barley and Urban South to NOLA Brewing Company and Bayou Teche, we now have some of the best breweries in the country right in our backyard,” said Oscar Chimal.

A craft beer competition will be added to NOLA on Tap so festival-goers and celebrity judges can vote for their favorite Pilsners, Lagers, Porters, Sours, and Stouts.

Another feature added to the festival will be the Doggie Drag Show presented by Petcetera. Come out and watch our lovable pups strut their stuff on the runway and sign up to be a foster for those waiting to be adopted.

The goal is to raise $100,000 for the LASPCA so they can continue to do the important work they do in our community.

Tickets will go on sale on December 15th.

Hotel Hope to Celebrate Fifth Anniversary with Inaugural “Hope Fest”

Hotel Hope, the New Orleans nonprofit serving women with children experiencing homelessness, is preparing to celebrate five years of impact at the inaugural “Hope Fest” presented by Teamsters Local 270.

Hosted by Zony Mash Beer Project, Hope Fest will take place on Saturday, April 1, from 7-10pm. The event will feature live music from the legendary Irma Thomas, Queen of New Orleans Soul, as well as Zony Mash beer and spiked seltzers, and food from local restaurants. A silent auction will also be held.

“We are so proud and excited to celebrate our success with the community and raise funds to help us serve more families,” said Sister Mary Lou Specha, Hotel Hope’s Executive Director. “In 2018, we realized a dream when we opened the doors to our 20-room motel. Hope Fest will help us build on all we have accomplished in partnership with more than 20 service delivery partners and 200 volunteers.”

Since opening their doors in 2018, Hotel Hope has served nearly 800 mothers and children experiencing homelessness, moving these families from their immediate housing crisis to a welcoming, safe, and private space where they can connect to critical supports and begin the process of transitioning back to permanent long-term housing.

Limited parking with security will be available at the event. Guests are encouraged to use rideshare services.

To purchase tickets, become a Hope Fest sponsor, or donate a silent auction item, please visit www.hotelhope.org/hopefest.
