NATIONAL CHOPSTICKS DAY
Each year on National Chopsticks Day, people worldwide celebrate the humble and ancient utensils on February 6th.
Around 1200 B.C., Chinese cooks began using chopsticks to prepare food. These tools were likely long enough to reach into hot cooking pots. Then about 400 B.C., when fuels for cooking became scarce, food was prepared in smaller pieces reducing the number of resources needed to cook it. At the same time, the need for sharp eating utensils faded, and shorter chopsticks entered the scene.
The Chinese term for chopsticks is kuai-tzu.
Once these handy eating tools found their way to the dinner table, they spread around the world. Portable and elegant in their design, they also vary in style from region to region.
Today chopsticks may be made from wood such as bamboo or aspen. Elaborately carved chopsticks may be cut from jade, ivory, or wood, and artisans may ornately paint some chopsticks with miniature scenes.

The return to the traditional parade routes means New Orleans Krewes and their riders are adding to their orders to ensure they have ample supplies of Mardi Gras throws and time-honored treasures, according to carnival/party supply expert Alyssa Fletchinger Higgins, vice president of Plush Appeal – The Mardi Gras Spot.
The family-owned store is seeing increased demand for plush and light up throws, novelty, glass and recycled beads of all kinds, since the announcement by the city that parades will return to full-routes, said Fletchinger.
“There has been so much excitement overall for Mardi Gras 2023, perhaps because carnival seems back in full force,” Fletchinger said. “News on the routes have krewes and riders stocking up on those little something extras.”
About Plush Appeal – The Mardi Gras Spot
Plush Appeal – The Mardi Gras Spot, located at 2812 Toulouse St. in Mid-City is one of the world’s largest suppliers of carnival resources, a favorite of New Orleans residents and newcomers when it comes to celebrations.

NATIONAL FROZEN YOGURT DAY
National Frozen Yogurt Day on February 6th recognizes a sweet frozen dessert that has gone from fad status to staple freezer item in a few decades.
Frozen yogurt sales are increasing every year as people want a healthier alternative to ice cream. The explosion of flavors and topping choices add to the popularity of frozen yogurt.
H.P Hood developed the first frozen yogurt in 1970 in the United States. It was created as a soft-serve treat called Frogurt. Not long afterward, Humphreys and Dannon released their own versions of frozen yogurt. Its popularity grew in the 80s, mostly due to frozen yogurts “health food” status. Ice cream manufacturers soon caught on, offering low-fat options.
Frozen yogurt is again making a comeback as consumers have begun to prefer the tart taste of yogurt. Not only does it find its way into home freezers, but it also is a sweet stop after work or play.

The Historic New Orleans Collection
Join us in celebrating the New Orleans debut of "Notre-Dame de Paris: The Augmented Exhibition," an interactive experience that offers a glimpse into the past, present, and future of a landmark that has weathered wars, witnessed Napoleon's coronation, withstood a devastating fire in 2019, and is now undergoing a meticulous restoration to return the structure to its former glory.
Each visitor will be issued a HistoPad as their portal into the past that offers unique insight into the cathedral's historical timeline, plus fun activities for the entire family.
After stunning audiences in Paris, Dubai, and Washington DC, we are excited to be only the second US institution to host the exhibition, which will be on view through March 1 in THNOC's Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal Street.

INTRODUCING QUEEN BILLIE JEAN KING GELDERMAN, HER MAJESTY XXX
Queen Billie Jean King Gelderman will serve as Her Majesty XXX aside her look-alike non-bio brother by a failed foster-turned-adoption for the first-ever brother-sister King and Queen reign. Not only do they have a common family tree, but they are also both stunning five-year old Silver Labs, so they look like carbon copies of each other.
But, while King Pete was busy terrorizing poultry on a chicken farm in his early days, Queen Billie Jean was birthing litter after litter in a nasty puppy mill. She was rescued by Take Paws Rescue and that is when Carroll Gelderman, who is also the King’s mother, agreed to take her for a trial run. This became permanent quickly despite her penchant for perusing kitchen counters for goodies on the regular because she has such a loving way about her.
Carroll, the human daughter of Tony and Katherine Gelderman, thought she would make a great addition to her mother and father’s household even though they (thought) they wanted a small dog. Fate has a way of giving everyone what they did not know they needed, and this was the case with Queen Billie Jean King Gelderman when she became part of the Gelderman family.
In this family, it is safe to say that it takes a bit of reviewing configurations of the relationships between King, Queen, mom, dad, sister, and stand-in mom. Charts with diagrams and arrows might help highlighted with crowns and scepters.
Queen Billie Jean King Gelderman is the son of Tony and Katherine Gelderman, and the sister of the 2023 King Pete Sampras Gelderman. Carroll is also considered another mother to the Queen, as she is often with her parents, and the King and the Queen spend lots of time together as besties (and family). In addition, the Queen is the brother of late Barkus Queen Honey Gelderman and late King Banjo Gelderman.
On a human scale, the Queen is part of long line of Rex royalty. Her mother, born Katherine Harcourt Waters, was the Queen of Carnival in 1982 and her sister-other mother, Carroll, was Queen of Carnival in 2014. This could be the ultimate meeting of the Canine and (people) Carnival Courts in the history of Mardi Gras.
The Queen’s situation today is quite different than she previously knew. Prior to her rescue, she spent many years confined with a single purpose to reproduce and received little attention otherwise. Now, she has a life full of love, travel, companionship, family, and lots of tennis balls. Like her brother, King Pete Sampras Gelderman, she enjoys playing with tennis balls which explains her name. She also spends summers at her family’s home near Fire Island, New York, where she swims, chases waterfowl, and sunbathes like a regular spa patron waiting for her cucumber eye treatment. When in New Orleans, she is often with King Pete while he works at the Garden District Bookshop, although she is not an employee like King Pete.
Looking forward, the Queen is considering producing a podcast focusing on how her high emotional IQ helped her cope with adversity and her belief that there are no bad dogs, just dogs that do bad things (sometimes). It is possible her brother, the King, will co-host.
Whatever she chooses to do, the Queen realizes that her life from trash to class embodies the Barkus mission of giving hope to pets waiting to be adopted. She would like her reign to be rooted in the magic that human love gives and the power of practicing gratefulness daily to those that saved her.
May her spirit soar as the ultimate Top Dog as we hail this 30th year parading as the greatest canine carnival on the planet with Queen Billie Jean King Gelderman, Her Majesty XXX.
All HAIL QUEEN BARKUS XXX, Queen Billie Jean King Gelderman!!!

New Orleans, LA. – NOLA on Tap, the beloved beer festival in support of the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LASPCA), will return to the festival calendar in 2023.
Yeah You Right Events, a new partnership between Top Taco and Food Fight producer Shane Finkelstein and restaurateur and Cinco de Mayo Fest producer Oscar Chimal, will take charge of the popular homebrew and craft beer festival. While some changes will be in store for NOLA on Tap, the LASPCA will remain sole beneficiary of the event.
Top Taco and Food Fight have become can’t-miss food festivals in the city. Yeah You Right Events aims to make NOLA on Tap look more like those events while still retaining many of the features that made it one of the largest beer festivals in the country.
Homebrewers will still battle it out for coveted awards and top-notch live musical acts will still grace the stages, but NOLA on Tap will now be a 21 and over ticketed event, and move from City Park on the fall calendar to Lafreniere Park on March 18th, 2023 from 2pm-7pm.
“We really wanted to take NOLA on Tap out of hurricane season,” said event producer Shane Finkelstein. “We love Lafreniere Park for the type of events that we do and its proximity to the city. It really is the perfect venue for medium-sized festivals.”
Other changes will include an all-inclusive ticket package for beer-lovers and a VIP Experience that will include a crawfish boil, open bar, signature beers, lounge seating, private restrooms, and additional food and entertainment.
Early bird tickets will start at $10 for “Designated Drivers” and $35 for unlimited beer samples, while all-inclusive VIP tickets will start at $95 and end up at $125 at the gate.
“We are so excited to have Yeah You Right Events bring back NOLA on Tap,” says CEO of the LASPCA, Ana Zorrilla. “We couldn’t have asked for a better group to bring it back after a 3 year-long hiatus.”
When NOLA on Tap was conceived back in 2009, Abita Brewing was the only brewery in Louisiana. Today, there are over 40 breweries in the state and dozens more around the Gulf Coast. The goal of Yeah You Right Events is to have every local and regional brewery represented at this year’s festival.
“From Gnarly Barley and Urban South to NOLA Brewing Company and Bayou Teche, we now have some of the best breweries in the country right in our backyard,” said Oscar Chimal.
A craft beer competition will be added to NOLA on Tap so festival-goers and celebrity judges can vote for their favorite Pilsners, Lagers, Porters, Sours, and Stouts.
Another feature added to the festival will be the Doggie Drag Show presented by Petcetera. Come out and watch our lovable pups strut their stuff on the runway and sign up to be a foster for those waiting to be adopted.
The goal is to raise $100,000 for the LASPCA so they can continue to do the important work they do in our community.
Tickets will go on sale on December 15th.

Hotel Hope, the New Orleans nonprofit serving women with children experiencing homelessness, is preparing to celebrate five years of impact at the inaugural “Hope Fest” presented by Teamsters Local 270.
Hosted by Zony Mash Beer Project, Hope Fest will take place on Saturday, April 1, from 7-10pm. “We are so proud and excited to celebrate our success with the community and raise funds to help us serve more families,” said Sister Mary Lou Specha, Hotel Hope’s Executive Director. “In 2018, we realized a dream when we opened the doors to our 20-room motel. Hope Fest will help us build on all we have accomplished in partnership with more than 20 service delivery partners and 200 volunteers.”
Since opening their doors in 2018, Hotel Hope has served nearly 800 mothers and children experiencing homelessness, moving these families from their immediate housing crisis to a welcoming, safe, and private space where they can connect to critical supports and begin the process of transitioning back to permanent long-term housing.
Limited parking with security will be available at the event. Guests are encouraged to use rideshare services.
