MARTIN LUTHER KING JR DAY
On the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King Jr Day honors the American clergyman, activist, Civil Rights Movement leader. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.(January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) is best known for his role in advancing civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience. King has become a national icon in the history of American progressivism.
Education
A gifted and friendly student, King attended Morehouse College, earning a B.A. in sociology. Combining a passion for racial equality with a rediscovered spirituality, King then attended Crozer Theological Seminary, following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps earning a Bachelors of Divinity.
Shortly after completing his Ph.D. in theology at Boston University in 1955, a 42-year-old Rosa Parks (See Rosa Parks Day observed December 1st) refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. The opportunity for the NAACP to bring their civil rights efforts to the forefront was before them, and they chose King to lead the successful city-wide boycott of the Montgomery transit system.
Young Civil Rights Movement
Just over a year later, King and over 60 other ministers and activists founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Together, they coordinated nonviolent protests and gave the young civil rights movement a voice.
Through the next twelve years, King would be influential in organizing marches, sit-ins, and political rallies for civil rights. For example, during a 1963 March on Washington, D.C. for Jobs and Freedom, King spoke before more than 200,000 regarding the challenges African Americans face. His “I Have a Dream” speech has gone down in many history books as one of the greatest speeches ever given. Brutally honest, with a call to action and a vision of hope, King’s speech resonated throughout the nation.
Selma
In early 1964, 1,500 men and women met a wall of state troopers during a march outside Selma. There, King led the marchers in prayer and avoided any confrontation with authorities. On July 2, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. That same year, King became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for his unswerving work in the Civil Rights Movement.
In early 1965, Selma, Alabama, became the center of the Civil Rights movement. Congress introduced new voting rights legislation. It proposed banning literacy tests and mandating federal oversight where tests were administered. Additionally, it gave the U.S. attorney general the duty of challenging the use of poll taxes for state and local elections. Televised violence in February of that year resulted in the death of Jimmie Lee Jackson. King’s presence and President Johnson’s support of the marchers helped bring peace. Throughout the next month, marchers continued between Selma and Montgomery. Congress passed the Voting Rights Act in August of that year.
Author, speaker, father, theologian, activist, King died on April 4, 1968, when James Earl Ray assassinated him in Memphis, Tennessee. King arrived in Memphis with other SCLC members supporting a sanitation workers’ strike. They stayed at the Lorraine Motel, and Ray’s bullet struck King on the balcony. Riots and violence would follow, and President Johnson would call for peace, referring to King as the “apostle of nonviolence.”

The Twelfth Night Revelers are the second oldest krewe in Carnival after the Mystick Krewe of Comus. Beginning as a parading krewe in 1870, by 1876 the krewe had abandoned their parade, and became a ball krewe. But, not before introducing New Orleans Carnival and Mardi Gras to the concepts of political satire and introducing the concept of throws from the floats. #TNR also gave us the use of debutantes as the queen and court, and popularized the idea of king cake. TNR used a traditional French gallete, and hid a bean in a piece before passing them out to the ladies in attendance (women were forbidden from participating in the early Carnival krewes, and would remain on the sidelines for another 26 years. But, that is another story.)
The lady who received the bean was named Queen of Carnival.

NATIONAL FIG NEWTON DAY
National Fig Newton Day on January 16th annually recognizes a tasty pastry enjoyed across the country.
A Nabisco’s trademarked version of the fig roll, Newtons are a pastry filled with fig paste. Fig Newtons have an unusual and characteristic shape that has been adopted by many competitors, including generic fig bars.
Up until the 19th century, many physicians believed most illnesses were related to digestion problems. As a remedy, they recommended a daily intake of biscuits and fruit. Fig rolls served as an ideal solution to their advice, which remained a locally produced handmade product.
In 1891, Philadelphia baker and fig-lover Charles Roser invented and patented the machine, which inserted fig paste into a thick pastry dough. The Cambridgeport, MA-based Kennedy Biscuit Company then purchased Roser’s recipe. They began mass production after purchasing the recipe. In 1891, they produced the first Fig Newtons baked at the F.A. Kennedy Steam Bakery. The company named the pastries after the town of Newton, Massachusetts.
After recently becoming associated, the Kennedy Biscuit Company and the New York Biscuit company merged to form Nabisco. The new company trademarked the fig rolls as Fig Newtons.

About the Exhibition / Sobre la exposición
New Orleans has long been identified—by locals, tourists, and historians alike—with its French heritage. A groundbreaking exhibition at The Historic New Orleans Collection restores balance to that assessment. During four decades under Spanish rule (1762–1803), the city experienced natural disaster, diplomatic tensions, and demographic transformation. Despite numerous challenges, Spanish New Orleans morphed from a poorly managed outpost on the edge of an empire to a highly urbanized colonial capital—one enriched by the racial and cultural diversity for which it is celebrated today.

Goat in the Road's immersive play set in the Historic BK House & Gardens has extended its run through January 29!
The Family Line
October 21 – January 29
Wednesdays & Thursdays at 7:30 pm
Fridays at 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm
Sundays at 2:30 pm
Taking place at BK House, 1113 Chartres St.
Tickets are $40 and available at www.bkhouse.org.
About the Play:
This show is an immersive, original performance inspired by the histories of both the BK House and the 1892 General Strike, a successful interracial organizing event that shut down the city for days before winning workers’ historic rights. During the show, audience members will be able to explore the historic property, following the characters and storylines they choose. The production will take place on the ground level of the courtyard and surrounding buildings, making it accessible to all.
The Family Line takes place at the BK House in the late 19th century, when it acted as rented rooms for working class Sicilian immigrants. The show's plot is inspired by the New Orleans General Strike of 1892, when over 30,000 New Orleans workers walked off the job to fight for shorter work days, increased pay, and ‘closed’ union shops. The audience will witness a community of grocers decide whether or not to join the strike during the memorial of a beloved community member, whose life connected them beyond their family line; and whose death reminds them of why their bond must never be broken.

The “Creolization” of Bermuda Vernacular Architecture: a Discussion about Tropical Design
- January 18, 2023
- 6:00pm — 7:30pm
Free
Much like Louisiana’s colonial building history, Bermuda’s vernacular architecture epitomizes a Creolization process that matched British building notions with local materials. This talk by Dr. Brent Fortenberry, director of Tulane University’s Master of Science in Historic Preservation program, explores the development of Bermuda’s architecture as an index of its changing identity in the British Atlantic world.
Fortenberry specializes in the vernacular architecture of the British Atlantic world and contemporary issues in historic preservation and cultural heritage. His most recent research focuses on the cities and port towns of the Greater Caribbean, including St. George’s, Bermuda and Natchez, Miss., as well as the plantation landscapes of Barbados, Jamaica and South Carolina.
This presentation includes a conversation about Bermuda’s architectural history and its similarities with New Orleans and the larger tropical and subtropical colonial world. Drinks and refreshments will be served. Free to the public.
Fortenberry will be the expert guide for the PRC’s upcoming trip to explore Bermuda, April 1-7, 2023.
The five-day, six-night voyage, hosted by PRC and Tulane University, features luxurious accommodations, expert guides and exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to some of Bermuda’s most beautiful sites. This itinerary delves deep into this island’s past — from the arrival of Spanish explorer Juan de Bermudez in 1505, through its formation in 1684 as a British crown colony, to its complex history as a base for slave trading, merchants, privateers and the Royal Navy, all of which influenced the island’s stunning historic architecture. The trip provides the rich context and attention to detail you would expect from the Preservation Resource Center and Tulane University’s School of Architecture. For more details click here.

What: The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus 2023 Parade, Chewbacchus XII
When: Saturday, January 28, 2023
Where: New Orleans, Louisiana
Contact: Aryanna Gamble, Richard Riggs, and Simonette Berry at overlords.ikoc@gmail.com
***
The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus parades along the streets of the Bywater, Faubourg Marigny, and French Quarter on Saturday, January 28, 2023, as it celebrates its twelfth season. The theme this year is Let the Wookiee Win. This is a direct quote wherein C-3PO, based on the advice of Han Solo, suggests that R2-D2 let Chewbacca win the game they are playing. Take it as you will.
As we have all learned over the past Carnival season, some things change, and some things stay the same. Chewbacchus once again has a new route, but we are thrilled to report that we are returning to the Bywater. Our new route begins at Franklin and St. Claude Avenues. We will proceed down St. Claude (river side), turn left on Elysian Fields, right on Decatur, and then continue along Decatur all the way until it turns into N. Peters. The parade ends at N. Peters and Conti. Please see the map attached.
The Chewbacchanal, immediately following the parade (doors open at 9:00 p.m.), will take place at the Fillmore New Orleans (6 Canal Street, New Orleans, 70130). The Chewbacchanal is open to the public and general admission tickets are $20. There will also be a limited-space VIP option for an additional $60, that includes a private room with complimentary specialty drinks and food, along with VIP-only tables and chairs in the main room. All party goers will enjoy live music by Golden Dawn Arkestra and People Museum along with various DJs throughout the night. The Chewbacchanal will end at 1:00 a.m. Tickets can be purchased via this link: shorturl.at/koqT5.
With over one hundred subkrewes spanning fandoms from Star Wars to Pokémon, there is something for everyone in this inclusive parade. One of the most popular aspects of the Chewbacchus parade are our handmade throws, the most iconic of which are our bandoliers and bando blocks (the ammunition strap and ammo worn by Chewbacca), which are created and handed out by members along the route. Members spend all year making special throws, which include magnets, jewelry, figurines, and so much more.
All Hail Our Sacred Drunken Wookiee!

NOLA on Tap Returns
Yeah You Right Events tabbed to bring back Louisiana’s Largest Beer Festival
New Orleans, LA. – NOLA on Tap, the beloved beer festival in support of the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LASPCA), will return to the festival calendar in 2023.
Yeah You Right Events, a new partnership between Top Taco and Food Fight producer Shane Finkelstein and restaurateur and Cinco de Mayo Fest producer Oscar Chimal, will take charge of the popular homebrew and craft beer festival. While some changes will be in store for NOLA on Tap, the LASPCA will remain sole beneficiary of the event.
Top Taco and Food Fight have become can’t-miss food festivals in the city. Yeah You Right Events aims to make NOLA on Tap look more like those events while still retaining many of the features that made it one of the largest beer festivals in the country.
Homebrewers will still battle it out for coveted awards and top-notch live musical acts will still grace the stages, but NOLA on Tap will now be a 21 and over ticketed event, and move from City Park on the fall calendar to Lafreniere Park on March 18th, 2023 from 2pm-7pm.
“We really wanted to take NOLA on Tap out of hurricane season,” said event producer Shane Finkelstein. “We love Lafreniere Park for the type of events that we do and its proximity to the city. It really is the perfect venue for medium-sized festivals.”
Other changes will include an all-inclusive ticket package for beer-lovers and a VIP Experience that will include a crawfish boil, open bar, signature beers, lounge seating, private restrooms, and additional food and entertainment.
Early bird tickets will start at $10 for “Designated Drivers” and $35 for unlimited beer samples, while all-inclusive VIP tickets will start at $95 and end up at $125 at the gate.
“We are so excited to have Yeah You Right Events bring back NOLA on Tap,” says CEO of the LASPCA, Ana Zorrilla. “We couldn’t have asked for a better group to bring it back after a 3 year-long hiatus.”
When NOLA on Tap was conceived back in 2009, Abita Brewing was the only brewery in Louisiana. Today, there are over 40 breweries in the state and dozens more around the Gulf Coast. The goal of Yeah You Right Events is to have every local and regional brewery represented at this year’s festival.
“From Gnarly Barley and Urban South to NOLA Brewing Company and Bayou Teche, we now have some of the best breweries in the country right in our backyard,” said Oscar Chimal.
A craft beer competition will be added to NOLA on Tap so festival-goers and celebrity judges can vote for their favorite Pilsners, Lagers, Porters, Sours, and Stouts.
Another feature added to the festival will be the Doggie Drag Show presented by Petcetera. Come out and watch our lovable pups strut their stuff on the runway and sign up to be a foster for those waiting to be adopted.
The goal is to raise $100,000 for the LASPCA so they can continue to do the important work they do in our community.
Tickets will go on sale on December 15th.
