NATIONAL SCIENCE FICTION DAY

National Science Fiction Day promotes the celebration of science fiction as a genre, its creators, history, and various media, too. On January 2nd annually, millions of science fiction fans across the United States read and watch their favorites in science fiction.

The date of the celebration commemorates the birth of famed science fiction writer Isaac Asimov. An American author and Boston University professor of biochemistry, Isaac Asimov was born Isaak Yudovich Ozimov on January 2, 1920. He is best known for his works of science fiction and his popular science books. Isaac Asimov, whose works are followed by many, died on April 6, 1992.

National Science Fiction Day is recognized by the Hallmark Channel and the Scholastic Corporation.

Considered a master of hard science fiction, Asimov, along with Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke, was considered one of the “Big Three” science-fiction writers during his lifetime. Many regard the Foundation Series as Asimov’s most outstanding piece. His other major series are the Galactic Empire Series and the Robot Series.

Some of the successful television shows recognized by science fiction fans include Star Trek-The Next Generation, The X-Files, Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, and The Twilight Zone.

As we look back at some older science fiction in our current technology-infused world, how close do the writers come to imaging our futures? Long before Asimov created his first work, humans imagined machines that allowed them to soar like birds. Another man, Leonardo Di Vinci, looked to the future, too. He designed contraptions worthy of the science fiction in his time.

Science fiction impacts life in ways we may not even consider – even those who don’t enjoy reading or watching science fiction.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Take One: Happy New Year, Saints

The Saints sure opened 2023 with a bang. They came into a stadium they haven’t won in three straight visits, against the team with the best record in football and put forth a total team effort where they never trailed to earn a well-deserved 20-10 win over the Eagles.

Finishing has been a theme for this team. They struggled with it throughout this season. Many thought after that Monday night meltdown in Tampa, they were finished. Yet, they stuck together and earned every bit of their three-game win streak.

Let’s not try to spin this into something that it isn’t. There will be no postseason for the Saints this year, which they have only themselves to blame for that. In the grand scheme of things, no one is going to view this season as a success. But maybe the team can take some pride in knowing that they played their best ball to close out the season when things could have gotten really ugly.

LSU will play Purdue for the first time ever on January 2 in the Citrus Bowl

LSU will cap off coach Brian Kelly’s first season in the Citrus Bowl against the Purdue Boilermakers on Jan. 2.

The game is set for Noon CT in Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida and will mark the third time the Tigers have played in the bowl game since 2016.

After dropping back-to-back games to both Georgia and Texas A&M to end the season, it was inevitable the Tigers’ lofty bowl expectations would diminish, pushing them to a Citrus Bowl berth.

 LSU Tigers vs Purdue Boilermakers

Current Records: LSU Tigers (9-4) vs Purdue Boilermakers (8-5)

Date/Time: Monday, January 2 at 12 p.m. CT

Where: Camping World Stadium - Orlando, Fla.

LSU’s season finale is inching closer with the Tigers set to take on the Purdue Boilermakers in the Citrus Bowl on Monday. With Brian Kelly’s squad looking to end the season on a high note and carry momentum into the offseason, there is still something to play for.

“It’s program development,” Kelly said. “What are these bowl games about? It’s your program, it’s developing the players, building morale, building camaraderie, building relationships with coaches and players. All of those things matter because you’re with them more than at any point in the season because there’s no academics. Building those relationships is invaluable.”

BATON ROUGE. – No. 9 LSU (14-0, 2-0 SEC) remained undefeated and opened 2023 with a New Year’s Day win at home over Vanderbilt (9-7, 0-2 SEC), 88-63, as four starters scored in double figures.

“I thought we shot the ball better today than we did at Arkansas,” Coach Kim Mulkey said. “That’s the first zone that we saw for forty minutes, so we were quite aware of what we were going to see. We hit some threes, but we didn’t just jack the ball up all over the floor.”

LSU improved to 14-0 for the third time in program history and the first time since 2005-06. LSU started 15-0 in 2002-03, the best start in program history and one the Tigers can match when they take on Texas A&M Thursday at 8 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.

NATIONAL CREAM PUFF DAY | January 2

National Cream Puff Day on January 2 is for dessert and pastry lovers alike to celebrate this delicious French creation all day long.

Originating in France, cream puffs are also known as profiterole and choux a la creme. Cream puffs are a French dessert pastry filled with whipped cream, pastry cream, ice cream or custard. They may be served plain or can be decorated with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, or dusted with powdered sugar.

Borrowed from the French, the word “profiterole” has existed in English since 1604. The “cream puff” has been found on United States restaurant menus since around 1851.

To prepare cream puffs, a pastry chef pipes a choux paste through a pastry bag or dropped with a pair of spoons into small balls onto a pan, then baked to form hollow puffs. After cooling, the cream puffs are injected with a filling using a pastry bag and narrow piping tip or by slicing off the top, filling the puff, and then reassembling.

The Historic New Orleans Collection

Join us in celebrating the New Orleans debut of "Notre-Dame de Paris: The Augmented Exhibition," an interactive experience that offers a glimpse into the past, present, and future of a landmark that has weathered wars, witnessed Napoleon's coronation, withstood a devastating fire in 2019, and is now undergoing a meticulous restoration to return the structure to its former glory.

Each visitor will be issued a HistoPad as their portal into the past that offers unique insight into the cathedral's historical timeline, plus fun activities for the entire family.

After stunning audiences in Paris, Dubai, and Washington DC, we are excited to be only the second US institution to host the exhibition, which will be on view through March 1 in THNOC's Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal Street.

Admission is free, with timed-ticketing reservations required. Learn more and reserve tickets: hnoc.org/notre-dame

About the Exhibition / Sobre la exposición

New Orleans has long been identified—by locals, tourists, and historians alike—with its French heritage. A groundbreaking exhibition at The Historic New Orleans Collection restores balance to that assessment. During four decades under Spanish rule (1762–1803), the city experienced natural disaster, diplomatic tensions, and demographic transformation. Despite numerous challenges, Spanish New Orleans morphed from a poorly managed outpost on the edge of an empire to a highly urbanized colonial capital—one enriched by the racial and cultural diversity for which it is celebrated today.

Rare Artifacts come to New Orleans for Exhibition on Spanish Colonial Era

Free bilingual display on view Oct. 20, 2022–Jan. 22, 2023

Features more than 120 objects — including maps, documents, furniture, paintings, books and more — from THNOC’s permanent holdings as well as from several institutions in Spain, Mexico and the United States. The display is the first and only time this selection of objects will be presented together in one space.

In a first for THNOC, “Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean / La Nueva Orleans y el Caribe españoles” will be presented in both English and Spanish.

“Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean” will be on view on the first level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal St. in the French Quarter from Oct. 29, 2022, through Jan. 22, 2023. Admission is free. Advance reservations are recommended and may be made at my.hnoc.org beginning Thursday, Oct.13, 2022. For more information, visit www.hnoc.org.

(504) 616-6739 (cell)

JennSamuels@gmail.com

NEW ORLEANS, LA, Calling all King Cake Enthusiasts. Jennifer Samuels, owner of King Cake Hub, announced multiple parties to celebrate the beginning of the 2023 Carnival season.

King Cake Hub and Zony Mash will host the first ever King Cake Monarch Pageant which will be part of our Countdown to Carnival Party and held in the tap room at 3940 Thalia Street. The party will be on Thursday, January 5, 2023 from 9pm until midnight when our newly crowned monarch will cut and share the first slices of king cake with all their royal subjects. The pageant will be emceed by our long time friends Prof. Carl Nivale and Grand Marshal Marty Graw and will also feature appearances by several dance krewes including El Lucha Krewe, Sassyracs and Voulez Krewe.  Zony Mash will be releasing the 2023 King Cake Stout. We’ll also have Southerns food truck onsite because what goes better with king cake and beer than fried chicken!  Soul Project will be onstage playing Carnival and New Orleans music to help get us all in the mood for that first slice of king cake and all the fun that is Carnival!

The King Cake Monarch will also be invited back to celebrate the opening of the main King Cake Hub location at 1464 S. Broad. The party starts again at 8:30am on Friday, January 6th with the opening of the main location, Josh Paxton playing Carnival favorites in the beer garden as well as Hey Cafe selling coffee and a new addition to the hub line up Paw Paws Donuts serving their amazing king cake donuts.

Back by popular demand The Shop at Historic New Orleans Collection at 520 Royal Street will serve the French Quarter with a rotating selection of kings cakes. The Shop will host a kick off party on January 6th starting at 9:30am with DJ Eureka Starfish. The pop-up location will be open Tues-Sat 9:30am-4:30pm and Sunday10:30am-4:30pm.

This will be King Cake Hub’s fifth year selling a wide assortment of the best king cakes you have ever and never tasted and will include a variety of more than 70 cakes from Bittersweet, Breads on Oak, Brennan’s, Bywater Bakery, Caludas’s, Cannata’s, Caywood and Randazzo Bakery, Hi Do Bakery, Gracious, Joe Gambino’s Bakery, NOCCA/Cake Cafe, Sugar Love, Nolita, Mad Matter Bakery, Waffles on Maple, Marguerite’s King Cakes as well as a number of king cake related sweets and other merchandise.

Many purists blame people eating king cake out of season for all kinds of calamities from hurricanes to dreary Saints seasons. While our extensive research can’t substantiate those claims we can conclusively say that king cake causes maximum joy when shared during the festivities of the Carnival season. So much so that we can’t wait a minute longer that necessary to start eating and sharing with all our fans.

King Cake Hub will be open daily from 8:30am until 6:00pm beginning January 6 through Lundi Gras. Delivery will be available through D’livery.

Placeholder, a community art gathering

Saturday, January 14, 2023, 12pm-4pm - come and go as you like

the Outdoor Learning Center at 2640 Lamanche Street, New Orleans

Free food, art and music

Please join us!

Placeholder is a community art series activating formerly blighted properties which are now serving their communities. We are gathering together to both honor the history of these spaces and celebrate their futures.

The Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development and BODYART began their partnership in 2019 with the intention of using art connected to place and identity to continue the cycles of rebuilding in the community. Living in New Orleans and especially in the Lower Ninth asks us to continually reinvigorate our recovery efforts - for our city, our neighborhoods, ourselves. With the addition of Mellon Fellow Rachel Slater, Placeholder has crystallized.

We are so excited to feature original work by local artists Alina Allen, Lissie Stewart, SWINE and Jason Meserole, with music by Brazilian Jazz guitarist Geovane Santos. Placeholder is a family friendly event!

We hope to see you there!

Placeholder will gather community from the Lower Ninth Ward and greater New Orleans

NOLA on Tap Returns

Yeah You Right Events tabbed to bring back Louisiana’s Largest Beer Festival

New Orleans, LA. – NOLA on Tap, the beloved beer festival in support of the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LASPCA), will return to the festival calendar in 2023.

Yeah You Right Events, a new partnership between Top Taco and Food Fight producer Shane Finkelstein and restaurateur and Cinco de Mayo Fest producer Oscar Chimal, will take charge of the popular homebrew and craft beer festival. While some changes will be in store for NOLA on Tap, the LASPCA will remain sole beneficiary of the event.

Top Taco and Food Fight have become can’t-miss food festivals in the city. Yeah You Right Events aims to make NOLA on Tap look more like those events while still retaining many of the features that made it one of the largest beer festivals in the country.

Homebrewers will still battle it out for coveted awards and top-notch live musical acts will still grace the stages, but NOLA on Tap will now be a 21 and over ticketed event, and move from City Park on the fall calendar to Lafreniere Park on March 18th, 2023 from 2pm-7pm.

“We really wanted to take NOLA on Tap out of hurricane season,” said event producer Shane Finkelstein. “We love Lafreniere Park for the type of events that we do and its proximity to the city. It really is the perfect venue for medium-sized festivals.”

Other changes will include an all-inclusive ticket package for beer-lovers and a VIP Experience that will include a crawfish boil, open bar, signature beers, lounge seating, private restrooms, and additional food and entertainment.

Early bird tickets will start at $10 for “Designated Drivers” and $35 for unlimited beer samples, while all-inclusive VIP tickets will start at $95 and end up at $125 at the gate.

“We are so excited to have Yeah You Right Events bring back NOLA on Tap,” says CEO of the LASPCA, Ana Zorrilla. “We couldn’t have asked for a better group to bring it back after a 3 year-long hiatus.”

When NOLA on Tap was conceived back in 2009, Abita Brewing was the only brewery in Louisiana. Today, there are over 40 breweries in the state and dozens more around the Gulf Coast. The goal of Yeah You Right Events is to have every local and regional brewery represented at this year’s festival.

“From Gnarly Barley and Urban South to NOLA Brewing Company and Bayou Teche, we now have some of the best breweries in the country right in our backyard,” said Oscar Chimal.

A craft beer competition will be added to NOLA on Tap so festival-goers and celebrity judges can vote for their favorite Pilsners, Lagers, Porters, Sours, and Stouts.

Another feature added to the festival will be the Doggie Drag Show presented by Petcetera. Come out and watch our lovable pups strut their stuff on the runway and sign up to be a foster for those waiting to be adopted.

The goal is to raise $100,000 for the LASPCA so they can continue to do the important work they do in our community.

Tickets will go on sale on December 15th.
