INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL SCIENCE LIAISON DAY

International Medical Science Liaison Day, on March 27th, recognizes the vital role Medical Science Liaisons (MSL) play in the success of a company.

Since being first established by Upjohn Pharmaceuticals in 1967, MSLs have become increasingly important to the companies’ success that employs them. According to the MSL Society website, “Today, MSLs are scientific experts to internal colleagues at their companies; they help to ensure that the drug or product they support are utilized effectively by physicians, and serve as scientific peers and resources within the medical community.”

NATIONAL SPANISH PAELLA DAY

March 27th is the annual observance of National Spanish Paella Day. A rice dish from Spain, paella has become very popular and is known worldwide. It originated in its modern form in the mid-19th century in Valencia, on the east coast of Spain.

At lunchtime, workers in the fields would make the rice dish in a flat pan over a fire. They mixed in whatever they could find – such as rabbits, snails, and vegetables. Later, for special occasions, chicken was added. Paella has spread to every region of Spain and worldwide, using almost any type of ingredient that goes well with rice.

There are many versions of recipes of paella. Key ingredients are saffron and olive oil. Saffron is an essential spice that also turns the rice into a beautiful golden color.

New Orleans 1903: A noontime parade of what at first blush appears to be a group of Shriners, judging by the design of the banner on the horse on the left and the two banners held aloft by marchers in the center. However, upon closer examination, the banner in the center background reads “”Al G. Field Minstrels Tonight.” The popular group was booked at the Crescent Theatre from October 22 through October 24, 1903.

Alfred Griffin Hatfield was a performer and minstrel show producer. Although popular at the time, many of his offerings included blackface reviews.

So, as the minstrels strolled through the streets of New Orleans to promote their appearance, a makeshift parade formed and was captured by an unattributed photographer. The crowd appears to be moving down Canal Street between Carondelet Street towards St. Charles Avenue.

before they were acquired by Coca-Cola, Barq's Beverages had one of these in the lobby of the corporate office in the Hancock-Whitney building (which is pronounced, "One Shell Square.") it was loaded with Barq's, and was free. Just pull a cold drink.

was there a local place that had one of these machines you used regularly?

Opened in 1917, the Strand Theatre was the Saenger Amusement Company’s star New Orleans house until the opening of the Saenger Theatre years later. It was located at 229 Baronne Street

Originally, the Strand Theatre hosted vaudeville and stage acts as well as screening movies, had its own "concert orchestra" and housed a Wurlitzer Style 4 organ, which was later replaced with a 3 manual, 8 rank Robert Morton organ. In 1937 it was taken over by the Joy Theatres chain. This photograph dates from 1949 or 1950.

Decades later, in an attempt to lure away audiences from television, a vast curved screen was installed, and the Strand Theatre became New Orleans' first movie house to screen films in the "Todd A-O" process, a high resolution widescreen film format, when the theatre was named the Panorama Theatre. It was developed by Mike Todd, the Broadway producer, and the Naify brothers.

Unfortunately, the theatre later fell into decline, was closed in 1959 and later demolished to make way for a high-rise office building. A new apartment complex in the South Market District was named The Strand to honor the old theatre.

The uptown campus of Loyola University has undergone many significant changes since its formal inception in 1912. But did you know that the school once had a football stadium?

Joseph Fromherz Stadium was located on the corner of Freret and Calhoun Streets, where the present day Mercy Hall (formerly Mercy Academy) and the school’s sports and recreation center (formerly the Loyola Field House) are now located. The top photograph is a panorama from 1924 by Charles Franck. In the far left background, you can recognize the spire of Holy Name of Jesus Church on St. Charles Avenue.

The second photograph is also from Charles Franck, an aerial photograph from 1924 that shows the stadium and grandstands, along with vast open spaces on campus and in the neighborhood looking back toward St. Charles Avenue. The school discontinued their football program in 1939.

In 1954 the construction of the Loyola Field House was completed, and the campus still retained much of the footprint of the old football field and cinder running track until the construction of a new student center and dormitories were completed in 1960s.

FOR THE LOVE OF COLOR!

MUSEUM NOW OFFERS ENCHROMA GLASSES FOR COLOR BLIND AUDIENCES TO EXPERIENCE COLOR

As part of our mission of accessibility and inclusion, Ogden Museum of Southern Art has partnered with EnChroma to make the colors in our artwork accessible to the color blind. Color blind guests can now borrow EnChroma glasses for color blindness at Ogden Museum for the duration of their visit.

Imagine being unable to see all the colors in a beautiful painting, a flower, a sunset, or the color of a loved one’s eyes? While people with normal color vision see over one million shades and hues, those with color vision deficiency only see up to 10% of colors. An estimated 350 million people worldwide are color blind: 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women (.5%). That means that over 1.9 million people in Louisiana and over 160,000 people in New Orleans are color blind and yet until now no museum in the state of Louisiana or in the city of New Orleans included accessibility options for this significant population.

Ogden Museum is proud to be the first museum in Louisiana to offer this new option for color blind guests.

Ask for Enchroma glasses at the front desk when you purchase your tickets to experience our art in full color!

Spring Into Action at Party for the Planet Presented by Entergy

Audubon Nature Institute is hosting a Party for the Planet this spring, focused on how everyone can make a positive impact on the natural world. Party for the Planet offers families unique opportunities to visit their local AZA-accredited zoo and aquarium, celebrate the Earth’s biodiversity, and learn how they can take action to make a difference.

Party for the Planet is presented by Entergy and starts with "Spring Into Action" at Audubon Louisiana Nature Center on April 1, 2023. Guests at this event and others in the series can enjoy activities, hands-on discovery and interactive experiences that promote environmental awareness. It is free to attend, and runs from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

  • 11000 Lake Forest Boulevard, New Orleans, LA, United States, Louisiana
  • (504) 581-4629

This year, Audubon Louisiana Nature Center will recognize Grayhawk Perkins as a special Cultural Naturalist during Spring Into Action. Perkins is a well-known musician, performer and tribal storyteller with background in both the Choctaw and United Houma Native Nations. He recently was awarded the title of Cultural Standard Bearer for Louisiana from the Lieutenant Governor’s Office. Perkins will perform throughout the Nature Center event.

"We look forward to this event every year," said Audubon Louisiana Nature Center Director of Operations Isaac Wyatt. "Spring Into Action gives our guests a chance to explore the Nature Center, learn from our conservation partners, and connection with nature in new and exciting ways."

Guests can take part in fun opportunities to experience the natural world including hearing from a NASA Solar System Ambassador, attend a workshop hosted by Waterwise, learn about the soon-to-reopen Audubon Insectarium, and many more activities connecting guests to nature. Admission to this event is free to the public.

"When we provide opportunities to help people learn about sustainability and conservation, our surrounding communities benefit," said Deanna Rodriguez, President and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. "An important part of a clean energy future includes protecting our natural resources that exist today. That’s why we continue to partner with the Audubon Nature Institute to encourage everyone to help take care of our environment."

Through a partnership with the City of New Orleans, Entergy New Orleans has placed free to use public electric vehicle charging stations throughout the city. Several electric vehicles will be on display at Spring Into Action, Entergy representatives will be on site to talk about the vehicles and how they can make a difference in the community and can help the city reach its clean energy goals. Audubon Zoo has two free electric vehicle charging stations, and two additional chargers are located on The Fly along the riverfront near the zoo.

Spring Into Action is the first of a three-part Party for the Planet series. Other special events include:

Endangered Species Day May 20 at Audubon Zoo

World Oceans Day June 8

This series is supported by Entergy’s Environmental Initiatives Fund, which directs $1 million annually to environmental improvement projects. Party for the Planet is part of Entergy’s recognition of the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day.

Hotel Hope to Celebrate Fifth Anniversary with Inaugural “Hope Fest”

Hotel Hope, the New Orleans nonprofit serving women with children experiencing homelessness, is preparing to celebrate five years of impact at the inaugural “Hope Fest” presented by Teamsters Local 270.

Hosted by Zony Mash Beer Project, Hope Fest will take place on Saturday, April 1, from 7-10pm. Hope Fest will help us build on all we have accomplished in partnership with more than 20 service delivery partners and 200 volunteers.”

Since opening their doors in 2018, Hotel Hope has served nearly 800 mothers and children experiencing homelessness, moving these families from their immediate housing crisis to a welcoming, safe, and private space where they can connect to critical supports and begin the process of transitioning back to permanent long-term housing.
