Lisa McLendon gave an online seminar, “Real News: How Journalism Brings You Accurate Information,” on Wednesday, March 31, for the Lawrence Public Library. The presentation covered journalism standards, fact-checking practices, and what news consumers can do to ensure they’re getting information from reliable sources.

KU Information Technology and the Center for Online & Distance Learning (CODL) have partnered to create several webinars focusing on creating accessible content. These webinars will help faculty and staff learn about providing and creating accessible files, videos, course content and more. COVID-19 vaccinations are now open for all KU employees and students. Kansas moved into Phase 5 of vaccine distribution on March 29, which means anyone over the age of 16 is eligible for the vaccine. Fill out the county’s vaccine survey to be notified of vaccine opportunities. You can find alternative vaccine distribution options, including pharmacies and nonprofit locations, at the CDC's Vaccine Finder website.

Applications open for University Daily Kansan leadership positions
|
Applications for summer and fall editor of the University Daily Kansan are now open. Applications should consist of a cover email to Rob Karwath with your attached resume and a plan for what you would do as editor. Please discuss at least these four topics: coverage, audience development, staff organization and working with the business team.
Email applications to rkarwath@ku.edu and follow up to make sure your email arrived. Contact Karwath if you are interested in taking any other leadership role on the Kansan for summer or fall on the news or business side. Deadline to apply is Friday, April 9.
On the business side, Adison Wash will serve as business manager for summer and fall. A new unit within the business side will straddle business and news. This Alumni and Community Relations team will work with Kansan alumni, KU Endowment, the J-School and others to create opportunities including fundraising for the Kansan and events. It also will work with groups within our campus and Lawrence communities on outreach and projects. Please contact Karwath if you have questions about this new division or anything related to the Kansan.

The University Daily Kansan is participating in College Media Madness 2021, a fundraising competition between two dozen student-run publications across the United States. The newsroom that raises the most money will be crowned the champion, and today is the last day. Donate now.
The Kansas Association of Broadcasters Annual Student Seminar will take place virtually April 8 with special sessions from industry leaders, a panel Q&A with some of Kansas’ top broadcasters, roundtable conversations and a career fair. Learn more and register here.
The Jim Nantz Award is presented every spring to the nation’s most outstanding collegiate sportscaster. The award is named in honor of the award-winning CBS sports broadcaster who exemplifies the best of our industry on and off the air. Deadline to apply is April 16. Learn more here.
KU Study Abroad is offering summer and fall study abroad and global internship opportunities. Modified to incorporate best practices in mitigating COVID-19 transmission and spread, extensive opportunities are available for disciplinary and cultural learning.

Wichita Gridiron Scholarships: Students are encouraged to apply for more than $10,000 in scholarships raised through Gridiron, a Wichita stage show starring members of the local media. Gridiron is put on by the Kansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Deadline has been extended to end of the day today. Learn more and apply here.
The Fred Young Hearst Television Producing Fellowship is now accepting applications until April 16. Candidates must be May 2021 graduates with an interest in a career as a television news producer. Learn more here.

Internship Experience blog: Caroline Stillian
|
Last fall, Caroline Stillian interned with The Borgen Project, a nonprofit working to make poverty a focus of U.S. foreign policy. The internship helped prepare her for her post-graduation plan: pursuing a master’s degree in political science. “This experience has really opened my eyes that my passion is to work with public policy and advocate for life-changing legislation,” Stillian said. The KU FNSA Powwow & Indigenous Cultures Festival is back with a variety of virtual events this month. For over 30 years, the KU First Nations Student Association (FNSA) has hosted the KU Powwow. In 2017, the Lied Center began its partnership with FNSA to help support the KU Powwow and expand the event to educate the community about the uniqueness of diversity of Native American peoples in our community, the United States and beyond. Baron to accept National Citation during online event April 21
|
Martin Baron, retired executive editor of The Washington Post, will accept the William Allen White National Citation award during a virtual event at 4 p.m. April 21 during an online discussion with J-School students, faculty, staff, trustees and alumni. The event also will be open to the public. Baron was selected as the 2020 National Citation recipient and was scheduled to receive the award and give an address on the KU campus last April, but the event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lori Turec, j’85, managing director of sales operations at DEG Digital Marketing & Advertising, was a guest speaker in the JOUR 611 Sales Strategies class March 29. DEG is a digital marketing partner to national and global brands and consistently recognized as one of the fastest-growing companies in America and one of the best places to work in the region. Turec provides executive leadership over DEG’s prospective new business relationships and leads DEG’s business development and alliance teams in their efforts to sign new clients. She shared the importance of business development with the class and DEG's approach to presenting to prospective customers.
Chris Bacon, former broadcast instructor who received his doctoral degree from the J-School in 2018, has received a Best of Festival King Foundation Award from the Broadcast Education Association. Bacon was the winner in the Faculty Sports Competition category. The 2021 Best of Festival winners were selected from a pool of over 1,350 entries representing over 300 colleges and universities in the following competitions: audio, documentary, film and video, interactive multimedia, news, scriptwriting, sports and two-year colleges.

2020 graduate publishes book

DeAsia Paige, j’20, has published a book, “The College Diaries: How a Budding Black Feminist Found Her Voice.” The memoir follows her journey through a predominantly white institution as she explores the intersection of race, gender and culture.
