National Citation recipient
Sally Buzbee , executive editor of The Associated Press news agency, has been selected to receive the 2019 William Allen White Foundation National Citation. Buzbee, a 1988 J-School graduate, will accept the award on William Allen White Day, which is April 11. Read the KU News story.
Bengtson Faculty Mentoring Award
Nominations are now being accepted for the Bengtson Faculty Mentoring Award. Tim Bengtson  taught and mentored more than 12,000 students during his more than 30 years at KU. During his tenure, Bengtson established a legacy as an outstanding advisor to his students and a trusted friend to his colleagues in the School of Journalism. This award established by alumnus Mark Mears honors and recognizes School of Journalism faculty members who demonstrate Bengtson s dedication to student mentorship. Students or faculty members may nominate an instructor. Deadline for nominations is Feb. 14.

Research and Presentations
Associate Professor Genelle Belmas was quoted in Buzzfeed News in an article on student journalism censorship, and her research on girls and censorship with Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski was cited. The article  focused on an Indiana student attempting to cover the arrest for alleged sexual assault of one of her classmates and the school s refusal to allow student media to do so.

Doctoral student Nyan Lyn will present his research paper, A long battle for Myanmar journalists: When democracy cannot guarantee free press, the fight has to go on, to AEJMC s Mid-Winter Conference March 2-3 in Oklahoma City.

Doctoral student  John Watson  is the author of the ICA-accepted paper, “Spartans and Bumper Cars: Framing wheelchair basketball and able-bodied basketball in college news sources.” This study is a qualitative analysis of collegiate wheelchair basketball and able-bodied basketball coverage in student news sources. 
“My Country, ‘Tis of Me: The self-presentation of Invictus Games athletes and Paralympic Games athletes on Facebook,” co-authored by doctoral students John Watson Evelyn Burns and  Yuchen Liu and master’s student  Melody Alexander  was accepted for presentation at the 69 th  annual ICA Conference in Washington, D.C. The study is an innovative comparison of how military veteran athletes with disabilities and elite athletes with disabilities self-present on Facebook. This paper began as a class project in Associate Professor Mugur Geana ’s J803 research course.
John Watson  presented both studies as part of a semester-long Disability Studies seminar series at the Hall Center for the Humanities. Contests, Awards and Scholarships
The Great Plains Journalism Awards  contest deadline is tonight before 10:59 p.m. The contest is an opportunity for students in an eight-state region to be recognized for their work. Students also can win $1,500 scholarships in five categories.  Learn more here.
The Kansas Association of Broadcasters is now accepting applications for its student awards contest. The deadline to enter is Feb. 15, and awards will be presented at the annual Student Seminar on April 2 on the KU campus.   Learn more and enter here.
The 2019 Diversity and Inclusion Action Group Applied Research Award application period is now open. Faculty and doctoral candidates are invited to apply for the award, which provides $5,000 toward the development and execution of a research project. Deadline for submission of proposals is March 15. Diversity & You: The J-School is holding a competition for students to submit photos and videos representing the subject diversity and you. Entrants have a wide latitude to express their views as it affects them and others. First-place winner will receive $400; second place is $200; third place is $100. Deadline is Friday, March 8. The Elizabeth Miller Watkins Memorial Scholarship is open to women who are enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at KU with at least a 3.0 GPA. Awards of $2,000 or more will be based on application materials, including essay and financial need. Deadline is March 1. Learn more here.

The Greater Than Gatsby Annual Scholarship supports the future of visual art and content creators. One recipient receives $10,000 annually to be used to help pay their tuition and academic expenses. Deadline to apply is March 1. Learn more here.

New sign for the JBar
A new neon sign for the JBar was installed last week by Dave Eames , owner of  Fossil Forge Design  in Lee s Summit, Missouri. Eames is a University Daily Kansan alumnus and was an award-winning graphic designer for many years for the Kansas City Star.

Patti Regan , 1987 J-School graduate and CEO of The Regan Group , was awarded Woman Entrepreneur of the Year at the Los Angeles Lakers game on Jan. 29.

Neil Getzlow , 1995 J-School graduate, has started a new company, Glow Relationships + Communications in Overland Park, Kansas. He was a communications manager for McDonald’s for more than 13 years.
Alumna to speak at public service leadership lecture
Christina Ostmeyer, 2016 J-School graduate, is one of the featured speakers for the Presidential Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Dole Institute of Politics. Ostmeyer is one of four female leaders from various stages of their public service careers who will discuss how they prepared to take on their leadership roles and how they mentor others. Ostmeyer is communications director for Kansas Appleseed , a local nonpartisan advocacy organization dedicated to vulnerable and excluded Kansans.
