We are planning an open house on Feb. 9 from 2 to 4 p,m. for alumni, friends of the J-School, or anyone who would like to tour the building. Please help us get the word out by sharing our Facebook event .

Research, Presentations and Publications
Associate Professor Genelle Belmas has had an article accepted for the 25th anniversary issue of Communication Law & Policy, to be published later this year. Her essay is a reflection on a 1975 Harvard Law Review article by John Hart Ely on flag desecration and how this article helped kick-start her legal research career. It will be part of a series of essays on important legal scholarship.

Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo ’s book chapter, “Visual Propaganda and Social Media,” has been published in  SAGE Handbook of Propaganda Seo ’s research, “Community-based intervention research strategies: Digital inclusion for marginalized populations,” has been accepted for presentation at the 2020 International Communication Association conference. 

Professor Scott Reinardy 's study about how journalists view the media landscape and their sense of identity once they leave the profession was featured in a KU News story last week.

Doctoral student Nyan Lynn ’s paper “Examining motivation and perceptions on the use of social media among Myanmar journalists” was accepted to present at the AEJMC’s midwinter conference that will be held in March at the University of Oklahoma. Nyan produced this paper in the Social Media Research class taught by Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo in the fall semester. He also was invited by 7Day News, a leading newspaper in Myanmar, to give a lecture on feature writing for two days to its reporters and editors before he returned to the school from his winter break.
Nominate a research mentor

Berlin Capital Program
Operated by the German-American Fulbright Commission, the Berlin Capital Program (May 23-30, 2020) invites young U.S. journalists and students of journalism to Germany. The weeklong seminar allows them to take a closer look at the German media landscape and gain a deeper awareness of the political, economic and cultural environment in Germany and Europe. Great Plains Journalism Awards
The Great Plains Journalism Awards  contest is accepting applications. The contest is an opportunity for students in an eight-state region to be recognized for their work. Students can win $1,500 scholarships in five categories. Deadline is Jan. 31.  Learn more here.
Student Employee of the Year
KU’s Student Employee of the Year  committee is now accepting nominations for the 2019-2020 award. This award was established to recognize student employees who embody service, excellence, dedication, and whose academic achievements remain stellar. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 7. Book collecting contest
KU Libraries and Jayhawk Ink are co-sponsoring the 64 th  annual Snyder Book Collecting Contest, which awards cash prizes and gift cards to recognize students’ interest in collecting books. All KU students are eligible to enter. Learn more here.

JST Topics is a set of three-week tutorial and project-based lunch-and-learn-style sessions designed to give you basic skills in Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere and Resume and Portfolio. Open to students of all majors and will be hosted by Ted Evans , a professional consultant who has more than 20 years experience.
