Research, Publications and Presentations
Associate Professor Jerry Crawford II was quoted in a Business Insider story by Dave Levinthal about journalists giving money to federal political candidates and committees during the 2020 election cycle. Crawford, who teaches classes in journalism ethics, was interviewed about the ethical implications of journalists giving to political campaigns, high-profile journalists engaging in the practice, and whether journalistic standards of the past are still applicable today.

Assistant Professor Hong Vu's research paper on the influence of fake news on journalistic practices has been accepted for publication in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly. The paper, "Chillin’ effects of fake news: Changes in practices related to accountability and transparency in American newsrooms under the influence of misinformation and accusations against the news media," is the first publication out of a larger project looking at recent changes in newsrooms across the country. The paper is co-authored by Professor Magdalena Saldana from Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. The authors would like to thank Dean Ann Brill, Professor Patricia Gaston, Mike Krings and doctoral student Darcey Altschwager for their tremendous help with the survey.

Kerry Benson, strategic communication track chair, was selected as a finalist for KU's HOPE (Honor for Outstanding Progressive Educator) award. Benson also was interviewed by the Mill Valley High School JagWire newspaper on how social media platforms influence voting in the 2020 election.

Doctoral student John Watson’s article "Uninspired: Framing Wheelchair Basketball and Able-Bodied Basketball in College News Sources" was published in Communication & Sport’s special issue: Sports Communication and Social Justice. John wants to thank his advisor, Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski, for encouraging him to publish this portion of his master’s thesis and guiding him through every step of the editing and publication process. See the special edition. Read the article.

Even so, additional funds may be available, so those students can still apply. Applications are due Dec. 15. Recipients will be notified in April 2021, and scholarships are for the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 academic year.
Watch this video to learn more about the scholarships.
