Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo’s research paper on technology education for marginalized women has been accepted for publication in journal ACM Transactions on Computing Education. This paper, “Informal Technology Education for Women Transitioning from Incarceration,” is part of her community-based research program offering technology education for women recently released from jails and prisons (NSF #1907002). Co-authors include Professors Hannah Britton and Megha Ramaswamy, doctoral student Darcey Altschwager, research associates Bernard Schuster and Marilyn Ault as well as UMKC Professors Baek-Young Choi and Sejun Song.
Associate Professor Mugur Geana was a guest speaker last week for the Media Communications Theory doctoral class at the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, Washington State University. Dr. Geana talked about KU’s Center for Excellence in Health Communication to Underserved Populations, the Experimental Research Laboratory, and his national and international collaborations in health communication research projects. He also addressed challenges to human subjects research because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and some of the most recent developments in trying to mitigate this disease.
Lisa McLendon, Bremner Editing Center coordinator, was interviewed by Bored Panda about language errors and grammar tips for an article that accompanied a collection of examples of typos, misspellings and incorrect usage.
The Center for Undergraduate Research is taking applications for the Spring 2021 UGRA competition. The deadline for student proposals is Oct. 29. Online guidance and individual virtual advising appointments are available to help students prepare strong applications. More information here.

White House Correspondents' Association scholarship
|

Broadcast media students are successfully producing eight shows per week and trying to make sure everyone is involved. Last week, they included several live shots from students who are quarantined and incorporated a Zoom session that included the teleprompter to allow for seamless timing. Watch live online here. Join the PRSSA: Students are invited join the next Public Relations Student Society of America virtual meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. Guest speaker is Jessica Palm, a 2011 J-School graduate and vice president and lead executive of TeamKC. PRSSA bridges the gap between students and professional careers.

The Dow Jones News Fund invites college juniors, seniors and graduate students to apply for paid summer 2021 internships in data journalism, digital media, business reporting and multiplatform editing. The application deadline is Nov. 9. The News Fund will select up to 80 college journalists for internships with news organizations across the country. Those selected also will benefit from weeklong, pre-internship training, $1,500 scholarships, memberships to journalism groups, and access to the DJNF alumni network for jobs and mentoring. BEA Scholarships: The Broadcast Education Association is now accepting applications for its scholarship program. The BEA offers thousands of dollars in scholarships for study in broadcasting and electronic media. The deadline to apply is Oct. 15. Learn more here.

ACES scholarships: Applications are now being accepted for scholarships through the ACES Education Fund, which awards six scholarships annually. ACES: The Society for Editing is the nation’s leading organization of editing professionals, educators and students. Learn more and apply here.
The Reynolds Journalism Institute’s 2020-21 Student Innovation Competition at the Missouri School of Journalism invites college students to participate by tackling engagement with a news organization. A student or student team will partner with a news organization to devise an engagement idea innovative to that organization. Applications detailing the team’s idea are due by Oct. 31. The chosen finalist teams will implement their idea at the partner news organization for three months before presenting the results on Feb. 26, 2021, in front of judges and the public on Zoom. First-place prize is $10,000. More details here.
The NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists invites students to attend its virtual convention Oct. 23-25. The convention is free to all student members of NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists, however, students who are not currently members may attend for only $25. The School of Journalism will pay the registration fee for students who want to attend; email jschool@ku.edu. Students who are not already members will receive a complimentary one-year membership to the association when they sign up for the convention. Student registration is available here.
The Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association is now accepting applications for its Reese Cleghorn Internship program, which supports developing college-student journalists by providing experience in newsrooms in Maryland, Delaware or the District of Columbia through eight-week paid summer internships. J-School Virtual Career Fair is Oct. 28

Make plans to participate in the J-School Virtual Career Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 28. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., employers will be conducting mini-interviews and drop-in sessions with KU students. Look for more details later this week on how to schedule times to connect with companies through a CareerFair Plus app.

Career and Outreach Office to provide interview, career fair tips
The Career and Outreach Office will host Zoom sessions on Oct. 14 and Oct. 21 to prepare students for the Virtual Career Fair on Oct. 28. Both sessions will begin at 1 p.m. Interview tips in a virtual setting will be the focus in the first session. Mark Gauert, 1982 J-School graduate, won two 2020 FOLIO Magazine Eddie & Ozzie Awards. He took the Eddie (editorial) Award in the City & Regional Column/Blog category for his column in City & Shore, the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s monthly magazine. He also won in the City & Regional Full Issue South East category for editing City & Shore PRIME. The full list of winners and honorable mentions, announced Sept. 21 in New York, appears here. Gauert this year also won an SPJ Green Eyeshade Award for humorous commentary/magazines and three Charlie Awards – the Florida Magazine Association’s top honor – for columns, humor and editing, also for work in City & Shore.
