Deadline to apply for 2023-24 scholarships is Dec. 15
Students, the deadline is this week to apply for School of Journalism and Mass Communications scholarships for the 2023-24 academic year! If you have general questions about the application, watch this video to get answers. Last year, the school awarded about $650,000 to current and incoming students, and 97 percent of students who applied received at least one scholarship. Recipients will be notified in April 2023 and will be invited to a scholarship ceremony on William Allen White Day on April 20. All students admitted to the school are encouraged to apply.

▮ School of Journalism and Mass Communications scholarships have become available for the Spring 2023 semester. These one-time, non-renewable scholarships are available to current students who are actively pursuing a degree in journalism and mass communications in the spring. If interested, please complete this form to be considered. The priority deadline is Dec. 23, 2022, but early applications are encouraged.

Save the date (Jan. 17) for the School of Journalism and Mass Communications Open House on the first day of classes next semester. Activities will include Doughnuts with the Dean, a campus media information fair, drop-in advising and the chance to learn about the new concentration in Sports Media and Society, which is launching in the fall.
The Walter J. Travis Memorial Scholarship is now accepting applications. Scholarships are awarded to students pursuing a career in one of the following professions: landscape design/golf course architecture; golf course turf grass management/golf course superintendent; professional golf management, club professional, or sports journalism with a special interest in golf. Applications to become a Report for America Corps Member open on Dec. 7 and close on Jan. 30, 2023. Report for America has 300 reporters and photographers in 200-plus newsrooms serving communities across the United States. RFA helps local newsrooms report on under-covered issues and communities by helping them find great emerging or experienced journalists and paying half their salary. Corps members are talented, service-oriented journalists who provide residents with the information they need to improve their communities and hold powerful institutions accountable. RFA is inviting KU journalism students to participate in a virtual information session at 10 a.m. Jan. 18 to learn more about the organization and job opportunities.
Applications are now open for the KMUW Korva Coleman Diversity in Journalism Internship, which is designed to train college students of color to be part of the next generation of public radio reporters and newscasters. The intern will get an immersive, hands-on learning experience at KMUW, Wichita’s award-winning National Public Radio station, as well as mentoring from NPR newscaster Korva Coleman. The full-time internship is for 10 weeks beginning about May 30, 2023. The intern will receive a $5,000 stipend and free room and board. Learn more here.
The Elizabeth Miller Watkins Scholarship assists women students of outstanding scholastic achievement and demonstrated financial need in completing their college education at KU. Awards of up to $2,000 per semester will be made to each recipient. Applications are now being accepted through Feb. 15. Learn more and apply here.

Reminder: Nutrition Nook is a resource for J-School students
As we approach the end of the semester, we want to remind students about the Nutrition Nook in Room 113 in Stauffer-Flint Hall. The Nutrition Nook shelves and refrigerator are stocked, and we encourage students to take what they need, especially if they need food over the semester break. Contact us if you have specific dietary requirements or other needs. We also have grocery and gas gift cards provided by donors. Guest coaches
Four J-School faculty and staff members were honored as guest coaches at the Dec. 11 women’s basketball game vs. Wichita State. Peter Bobkowski, Patricia Weems Gaston, Heather Lawrenz and Eddie Muñoz were part of a group of KU employees nominated by KU women’s basketball student-athletes to attend the team shootaround, a pregame meal and basketball game.

Assistant Professor of the Practice Rebekka Schlichting was featured in the winter edition of Lawrence Magazine for her “Ioway: Here to Stay” traveling exhibit. She created the exhibit with Sydney Pursel, both Ioway Nation members. In the story, Schlichting said, “It is significant to tell the story of the Ioway people — past and present — and being able to reclaim our history in this area and at those locations is very transformative and healing for our people.”
Assistant Professor Ever Figueroa’s paper, “The Blame Game: how video evidence changes narratives of misogynistic violence in sports discourse,” has been published in Feminist Media Studies.
Assistant Professor Judy Watts was recently invited to present "Songs, Movies, and Memory: How People Enjoy Lighthearted Entertainment" at the Endacott Society Arts & Sciences speaker series. Dr. Watts discussed her recent work on media induced reminiscence and nostalgic responses to entertainment. The Endacott Society is an organization of retired faculty and staff that operates under the aegis of the KU Alumni Association.
The Center for Excellence in Health Communication to Underserved Populations (CEHCUP) announces the first installment of its Research Exhibition with the topic "COVID-19 and Society." Research that explores how the pandemic influenced societal norms, how social actors responded to the threat, and media roles in influencing opinions and behaviors related to the pandemic are welcome. A display gallery open in Stauffer-Flint Hall from Feb. 15 to March 12, 2023, will be a mixed reality interactive event (no physical displays). If you are a William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications alumni, student or faculty conducting research in health communications, you are encouraged to submit a presentation. Carlos P. Beltran has published a book, “It Suddenly Occurred to Me,” which documents his 12-year collaboration with writer Yadira Silva, who is a poet and co-founder of Movimiento de Redes Penitenciarias, a movement focused on the social reintegration of ex-convicts in Venezuela. The book explores the socio-economic struggles of Venezuela through Beltran's photojournalism and texts from Silva, some of which were written from within Venezuelan prisons decade ago.
