Assistant Professor Melissa Greene-Blye will give a lecture titled “News Media and Native Representation: How Historical Misrepresentations Continue to Misinform and Manifest in the Modern Moment” at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
Lisa McLendon, Bremner Editing Center coordinator, served as the official pronouncer for the Douglas County Spelling Bee on Saturday, Feb. 11. This bee is the first step for local students on the route to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The KU Center for Latin-American and Caribbean Studies awarded Associate Professor Mugur Geana a $1,000 travel grant to expand his collaboration with partners from Chile. This award complements funding Dr. Geana received from KU International Programs and will allow him to extend his visit to Chile to include a university in the south-central part of the country, UFRO (Universidad de la Frontera). Dr. Geana's work with the School of Communication and the School of Medicine at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile addresses health promotion and disease prevention for underserved populations in the Andean country, especially Indigenous communities.
The 2023 CEHCUP Research Exhibition opens this week in the school's Clarkson Gallery. Starting Thursday, you can stop by the first floor of Stauffer-Flint Hall and use your iPhone or iPad to experience the interactive research posters in augmented reality. Each poster includes a short audio presentation by the lead author. Due to software limitations, only iPhones and iPads can be used at this time, but the school has provided a couple of iPads that can be checked out from the Resource Center to explore the exhibition.

KSPA Winter Workshop is today
The Kansas Scholastic Press Association welcomed more than 150 high school students at the KSPA Winter Workshops today. William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications staff, faculty and students helped students and teachers enrich their skills in media, journalism and communication. This is the first year the Winter Workshops have been offered with the goal of giving students a glimpse of college instruction and providing hands-on opportunities. The KU instructors and professors who participated include Joseph Erba, Patricia Gaston, Carol Holstead, Heather Lawrenz, Scott Reinardy, Rebekka Schlichting and executive director Eric Thomas.

Although graduating seniors are not eligible for scholarships, they are eligible for awards. The Kansas Association of Broadcasters is accepting entries for its 2023 student broadcast awards. The awards help give high school and college students the opportunity to show off their best work and gain recognition among their peers and from Kansas media. Deadline to submit is March 15. The KC Ad Club’s 2022-23 Foundation Scholarship application is now open. The scholarship has been awarded for over 30 years and helps students set themselves apart from their peers and get involved in the thriving Kansas City advertising community. Student Annabelle Bitner received the scholarship last year and said: “The KC Ad Club has given me so many opportunities! My mentor has guided me in different tracks and careers I could explore, and everyone on the board has been nothing but overly generous to me. Having the experience and connections is more valuable than the scholarship money. To anyone who is interested in applying, I encourage you to do so! The Elizabeth Miller Watkins Scholarship assists women students of outstanding scholastic achievement and demonstrated financial need in completing their college education at KU. Recipients can receive up to $2,000 a semester. Deadline to apply is Feb. 15. Learn more and apply here.
Wichita Gridiron Scholarships: Students are encouraged to apply for more than $10,000 in scholarships raised through Gridiron, a Wichita stage show starring members of the local media. Gridiron is put on by the Kansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Deadline is Feb. 21. Learn more and apply here.
MB Piland, a marketing agency in Topeka, Kansas, is hosting a job shadow experience for juniors and seniors March 16 at its office, 923 S. Kansas Ave., Loft Suite 7. The experience includes a sample marketing strategy meeting, hands-on creative exploration and critique, brainstorming exercises, lunch, interview and portfolio tips, and social media do’s and don’ts. J-School grad visits with students
Students in Professor of the Practice Angie Hendershot’s JMC 320 Introduction to Strategic Communications course heard from guest speaker and J-School alum Brooke Estell (c’13, g’19) about her copywriting and creative work with Conscious Minds Studios. She shared projects created on behalf of Nike and JD Sports/Finish Line, including the episodic experiment Come Thru created for Black, Indigenous and Women of Color (BIWOC) using talk show format long-form video content on YouTube. She will also be presenting at the upcoming KCIABC Business Communicator’s Summit on Feb. 23 at the KU Edwards Campus.

Career Fair is March 2
All students are invited to connect with more than two dozen employers at the Journalism and Mass Communications Career Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 2 at Stauffer-Flint Hall. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about internships and full-time jobs. A photographer will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to take professional portraits for LinkedIn profiles and portfolios. Also, a breakout room will be provided for students to receive resume reviews from a few of the employers. The Career and Outreach Office will share tips on how students can prepare for the J-School Career Fair from 1 to 2 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Clarkson Gallery.

The Center for East Asian Studies Career Forum is an opportunity for students to learn about potential international career fields and hear how KU alumni are using their degrees in East Asia and the world. J-School alumnus Jim Small, Major League Baseball senior vice president, international, will be a guest speaker at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at The Commons in Spooner Hall. As a senior leader of MLB’s international development team for nearly 25 years, Small is responsible for many key international initiatives, including the World Baseball Classic, which has grown into the globe’s preeminent international baseball tournament, with nearly 400 million in cumulative viewership since its inception.
