Students fan out for busy week of sports coverage
Last week was a full week of sports media opportunities for J-School students. Mya Peterson (above) was featured live on a College GameDay segment on Saturday. Watch here (starting at 12-minute mark). Students also covered (photos below) the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl victory parade and celebration on Wednesday, the KU vs. Missouri ice hockey game (Rivalry at the Rink) on Thursday, and the KU vs. Baylor men's basketball game on Saturday. They also covered the KU women's basketball game Sunday and the baseball team in Texas.

The 2023 CEHCUP Research Exhibition showcasing research by faculty, alumni and graduate students on the topic of "COVID-19 and Society" has opened online and at the Clarkson Gallery in Stauffer-Flint Hall. Those interested can experience the research posters in augmented reality (AR) by scanning the QR codes posted in the gallery. For those who prefer to see the posters in a web browser or want to experience the AR versions on their own premises, go to the CEHCUP website. The exhibition will run until March 15, 2023.
You might be hearing a lot about ChatGPT and artificial intelligence-generated content. Lisa McLendon gave ChatGPT some assignments: It created clear, readable prose, but facts were where its tools started to break down. Read the story in Poynter. A study by Assistant Professor Vaibhav Diwanji analyzed more than 1,000 AI-generated online ads and found that they are labeled as ads only about half the time. Although humans must use guidelines by agencies such as the FCC and FTC when creating ads, AI isn't bound by such restrictions so far. Read the KU News story.

Workshop: ChatGPT and the classroom
Drs. Genelle Belmas, Vaibhav Diwanji and Lisa McLendon will present a “Lunch and Learn” workshop on ChatGPT on Friday, Feb. 24, at 11:30 a.m. in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 303. They will discuss what ChatGPT is, what it can and can’t do, how AI tools are being used professionally, and how to ensure students use AI tools productively, rather than dishonestly. Bring your questions and share your own experiences. More than 150 high school journalism students and their teachers visited the KU campus Feb. 13 for the Winter Workshops hosted by the Kansas Scholastic Press Association. Students visited the Kansas Union, Stauffer-Flint Hall and the newly created photography studio in the Dole Center. Sessions were led by KU professors and instructors and high school teachers. Faculty from the J-School included Joseph Erba, Patricia Gaston, Carol Holstead, Heather Lawrenz, Scott Reinardy, Rebekka Schlichting and executive director Eric Thomas. Similar workshops hosted by KSPA occurred later in the week at Kansas State University and Wichita State University.

Judges needed for KSPA contest
The Kansas Scholastic Press Association needs lots of help judging its Regional Contest, an annual competition with more than 2,000 entries in 26 categories. Please consider judging two or three categories. Some categories have as few as three entries; nine entries is the average. Sign up by 5 p.m. Feb. 21. (Entries will be sent Feb. 23, and judging is due March 1.) The contest keeps KSPA financially afloat and also provides students with recognition and feedback on their work.

Attention, J-School seniors! You may be eligible for J-School awards before you graduate! Last year, the School of Journalism and Mass Communications provided over $50,000 in student awards. Although graduating seniors are not eligible for scholarships, they are eligible for these awards. For this application, students must be graduating in the 2023 calendar year with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communications. If this applies to you:

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters is accepting entries for its 2023 student broadcast awards. The awards help give high school and college students the opportunity to show off their best work and gain recognition among their peers and from Kansas media. Deadline to submit is March 15. The KC Ad Club’s 2022-23 Foundation Scholarship application is open. The scholarship has been awarded for over 30 years and helps students set themselves apart from their peers and get involved in the thriving Kansas City advertising community. Student Annabelle Bitner received the scholarship last year and said: “The KC Ad Club has given me so many opportunities! My mentor has guided me in different tracks and careers I could explore, and everyone on the board has been nothing but overly generous to me. Having the experience and connections is more valuable than the scholarship money. To anyone who is interested in applying, I encourage you to do so! Wichita Gridiron Scholarships: Students are encouraged to apply for more than $10,000 in scholarships raised through Gridiron, a Wichita stage show starring members of the local media. Gridiron is put on by the Kansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Deadline is Feb. 21. Learn more and apply here.
MB Piland, a marketing agency in Topeka, Kansas, is hosting a job shadow experience for juniors and seniors March 16 at its office, 923 S. Kansas Ave., Loft Suite 7. The experience includes a sample marketing strategy meeting, hands-on creative exploration and critique, brainstorming exercises, lunch, interview and portfolio tips, and social media do’s and don’ts. The deadline to apply is Feb. 28. Six students will be selected. Apply here.

Save the date: J-School
Career Fair is March 2
All students are invited to connect with more than two dozen employers at the Journalism and Mass Communications Career Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 2 at Stauffer-Flint Hall. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about internships and full-time jobs. A photographer will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to take professional portraits for LinkedIn profiles and portfolios. Also, a breakout room will be provided for students to receive resume reviews from a few of the employers. To see a list of employers attending or learn more about the career fair, go to the J-School website.
The Career and Outreach Office will share tips on how students can prepare for the J-School Career Fair from 1 to 2 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Clarkson Gallery.

Del Brinkman, former dean of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications, died Feb. 19 at age 86. Brinkman joined the J-School faculty in 1970. He served as University Daily Kansan adviser and acting dean before being named dean in 1975. In 1986, he was named KU vice chancellor of academic affairs. Read his obituary.
