RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS

Professor Hyunjin Seo was an expert panelist for the Generating Online Trust session held at the Social Science Research Council in New York on March 9. 


Stephen Wolgast, Knight Chair in Audience and Community Engagement in News, spoke at the Prairie Museum of Art and History in Colby, Kansas, on March 16 about “The Promise and Perils of Social Media.” He was invited by the museum to speak at Food for Thought, its monthly community luncheon. The presentation was underwritten by Humanities Kansas.


Assistant Professor Melissa Greene-Blye has had two articles recently accepted for publication:

“Speaking into the Silences: American Indian Representation and Negotiation in News Media” will be published in a forthcoming special issue of the journal Ethical Space. The special issue will focus on issues of Indigenous identity and representation.

“War Chief, Friend of the President, Prohibitionist: Would the ‘real’ Little Turtle Please Stand Up,” has been accepted for publication in American Journalism.


Good Morning Indian Country, the only collegiate-level, student-led Native news and information program in the nation, has received a $1,000 grant from the Center for Community News from the University of Vermont. Assistant Professor Melissa Greene-Blye also has been named one of the center’s 33 Faculty Champions, recognizing faculty leaders addressing the crisis facing local news by building innovative programs across the United States. The J-School is renovating its rooms in the Dole Human Development Center into graduate student spaces and an audio/visual/production studio. If you would like to provide input or suggestions on the space usage, please fill out this form.

The J-School is accepting nominations for the Katich Award for Creativity, which recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated creativity in teaching, research, service or a combination of these areas. It was established to honor former J-School Professor John Katich, a dedicated teacher who loved students and inspired them to exceed their own expectations. The deadline is March 31.

J-School student Sarah Carson, who is a photographer for the University Daily Kansan, was featured in this KSHB story.


Undergraduate students are invited to enter the annual Philip Whitcomb Essay Contest. Essays should address “the relationship of knowledge, thought and action in public affairs and public policy.” The author of the winning essay will receive $500 and their name added to a plaque of past winners in Nunemaker Center, the home of the University Honors Program. Deadline is April 14. Learn more here.
