KU Ad Club visits

KC for Ad Crawl


The KU Ad Club visited three agencies in Kansas City on March 24 as a part of its annual Ad Crawl. This Ad Crawl was the first since the pandemic, and the students visited Signal Theory, Barkley and Native Digital. RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS

Associate Professor Teri Finneman'co-authored article, “A Discursive Evolution: Trade Publications Explain News Deserts to U.S. Journalists,” has been accepted for publication in Media and Communication.


Professor Peter Bobkowski and Assistant Professor Chris Etheridge have published a study in Science Communication showing how mass communication students across concentrations can build data literacy and be more attractive to hiring managers through what they call “spreadsheet wherewithal” and the data project lifecycle.


Associate Justice Evelyn Wilson of the Kansas Supreme Court spoke to the students of JMC 408: Media Law & Ethics, taught by Stephen Wolgast, professor of the practice of journalism, on Thursday, March 23. In a presentation covering criminal libel, true threats and the role of judges, Justice Wilson explained free speech from the perspective of a jurist and offered tips for journalists covering trials.

INSIDE THE SCHOOL

The J-School is accepting nominations for the Katich Award for Creativity, which recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated creativity in teaching, research, service or a combination of these areas. It was established to honor former J-School Professor John Katich, a dedicated teacher who loved students and inspired them to exceed their own expectations. The deadline is March 31.

2:30-3:10 p.m.: Conversation with Dr. Teri Thompson, editor-in-chief of Health Communication, on academic publishing 

3:10-4 p.m.: Faculty/Graduate Student Presentation/Q&A: 

  • Dr. Judy Watts: “Persuasive testimonials: investigating the boundaries and effectiveness of health narratives on behaviors”
  • Pamela Peters: “Exploring the roles the digital divide and social capital play for first-generation college students at HBCUs during the college search and financial aid process” 
  • Professor Steve Wolgast: “The imagined audience in Kansas: Journalists describe readers of education beat reporting”

4-4:30 p.m.: Graduate student award announcements and reception (hors d’oeuvres and drinks provided)

Scott Richards, founder of Ninth & Chapel, a Denver-based marketing and consulting agency specializing in building brand solutions and relationships at the local level, was the guest speaker in the Sales Strategy 611 class March 6, discussing creativity and how and why ideas sell. Before starting his own company, Richards worked as executive vice president for the Integer Group, one of the world's largest promotional, retail and shopper marketing agencies.


If you love the J-School, become a student ambassador! The Journalism Student Ambassador Program consists of a select group of students who are committed to the positive promotion of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Ambassadors lead tours of the school in Stauffer-Flint Hall. In addition, they represent the school at events and programs sponsored by the school. Undergraduate students are invited to enter the annual Philip Whitcomb Essay Contest. Essays should address “the relationship of knowledge, thought and action in public affairs and public policy.” The author of the winning essay will receive $500 and their name added to a plaque of past winners in Nunemaker Center, the home of the University Honors Program. The Dole Institute’s Lacy Internship Assistance Program offers financial assistance to KU students in pursuit of careers in public service, politics, museum/archival studies or related fields to offset the travel and living expenses associated with an internship. Learn more here.

J-School students receive

Wichita Gridiron Scholarships


Congratulations to students Mya Peterson and Cuyler Dunn, who are recipients of Wichita Gridiron Scholarships. Peterson, a junior who received the Chris Shull Memorial SPJ Scholarship, hopes to start her own media production company combining her passions of film, sports journalism and marketing. 

Dunn is a freshman who received the Bill Warren SPJ Scholarship. He has been recognized by the Kansas Scholastic Press Association as the Kansas Student Journalist of the Year and by the National Scholastic Press Association for the Sports Story of the Year. He was a finalist for the National Scholastic Press Association National Writer of the Year. Wichita Gridiron is a stage show presented by the Kansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Its purpose is to raise money for journalism scholarships for Kansas college students.

The Career Outreach Office will host a session on “What to Expect in a Remote and Hybrid Work Environment” from 1-2 p.m., Wednesday, April 5, in the Clarkson Gallery. It is a great opportunity for students to learn more about working from home and the flexibility of working from home and in an office environment. No registration required. ALUMNI UPDATE

Stephanie Morales Macedo, j'22, who is now a graduate student in the UCLA MFA Producers Program, attended the Academy Awards ceremony on March 12 as part of her program. While at the J-School and KUJH-TV, Stephanie said she used to report on the Grammys, Oscars, Golden Globes, etc. during a segment called KUJH Roundtable. She said: “I didn’t realize it would have been a full circle moment until two years later when I am sitting at the Oscars. I was sitting behind the ‘Wakanda Forever’ group and I was behind Rihanna. Like what? I used to report on the Oscars and when I was sitting and watching the show, I couldn’t help and remember my days at KU.”
