RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS

An article by Associate Professor Hong Vu, doctoral candidate Annalise Baines and doctoral student Nhung Nguyen has recently been accepted to Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly. The article, titled "Fact-Checking Climate Change: An Analysis of Claims and Verification Practices by Fact-Checkers in Four Countries,” investigates fact-checked content on climate change from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Germany. It examines two important aspects of professional fact-checking practices including transparency and accessibility. An earlier version was presented at the International Communication Association’s conference in the summer.

Steve Wolgast, Knight Chair in Audience and Community Engagement for News, spoke at Seward County Community College, in Liberal, Kansas, to students and faculty on the topic of "Writing Basics: Getting Details from Interviews," on Oct. 14. His presentation was part of the “Saints Scribes” program, a series of authors, poets, and other experts who give presentations on humanities topics and writing workshops for students, faculty, and the public. The series is funded by the college library’s grant from the American Library Association’s American Rescue Plan: Humanities Grants for Libraries, an emergency relief program to assist libraries that have been adversely affected by the pandemic.

KSPA executive director and KU instructor Eric Thomas visited Notre Dame De Sion High School in Kansas City on Oct. 10 to speak to students about how a camera can help curious photographers meet interesting people. The daylong session was part of the school’s second annual Deep Dive program, which introduces students to ideas outside the normal high school curriculum. INSIDE THE SCHOOL

The J-School's Center for Digital Inclusion, led by Professor Hyunjin Seo, received the Award of Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion from the University Economic Development Association at the 2022 UEDA Summit in San Antonio on Oct. 11. The award recognized the center’s evidence-based technology education and information literacy programs for marginalized populations. The UEDA award in the DEI category focuses on “projects making communities more equitable by increasing opportunities for historically underserved populations.” Seo gave an award presentation at the UEDA Summit along with Tanesha Whitelaw and Jodi Whitt, who serve as digital navigators for the center.

Associate Professor Teri Finneman is hosting News Desert U at the J-School later this week. About 100 people from across the country have signed up to discuss how universities can play a bigger role in helping solve the news desert crisis with student reporters. Finneman is founder and publisher of the news desert publication The Eudora Times

Professor of the Practice Angie Hendershot, who is the 2022-2023 KU Edwards Campus Faculty Teaching Excellence Award winner, is featured in this Q&A interview on the KU Edwards Campus website.

STUDENT NEWS & OPPORTUNITIES

Grad Path podcast: Migrating from

a professional to academic career

Migrating from a professional life to an academic one might be challenging. How do you know you are ready for that next step? What are the biggest challenges in the transition? How can your professional background influence your research and teaching? To answer those questions, J-School faculty members join host Fernanda Silva on this week’s Grad Path podcast. Assistant Professor Melissa Greene-Blye worked as an anchor and reporter for 20 years before joining the J-School; Professor Scott Reinardy, associate dean for student success, is former a sports writer and editor. Listen to the podcast.

The KU Ad Club will meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 19 in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 303. Steve Rottinghaus, career and outreach coordinator, will discuss career fair and resume tips. This meeting will be held the day before the career fair and will provide useful information and advice to prepare students for the fair. This will be the last free meeting. Dues of $25 will be collected Oct. 19 through Nov. 16.

The University Career Center is hosting Mocktober Fest during October. Eighty-seven KU alumni have volunteered to conduct mock interviews with KU students Oct. 18 (4:30-5:30 p.m.) and Oct. 24 (5:30-6:30 p.m.). The interview is designed to help students increase their confidence, build their network and provide helpful feedback and techniques. This is a fun, relaxed and engaging opportunity for beginner and experienced interviewers. Interviews take place via Zoom and consist of one KU alumnus and two KU students, which allows for peer-to-peer and alumni feedback. For more information, contact the University Career Center at [email protected] or call 864-3624.
