RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS

Assistant Professor Ever Figueroa’s research study titled "Casting heroes and victims of disaster events: representations of race and gender in Hurricane Harvey front page news images" was published last week in Critical Studies in Media Communication.


The research article "When 'meaningless' means more: Biographic resonance and audience appreciation of popular entertainment," co-authored by Assistant Professor Judy Watts and colleagues from The Ohio State University, was recently published in the Journal of Communication. The article discusses the relationship between re-exposure to familiar music and films, memory and appreciation. Read the article.


Associate Professor Mugur Geana was awarded a Fall 2022 Course Transformation Grant by the KU Center for Teaching Excellence. The grant will support redesigning course assignments and content updates of JMC 862 - Data Collection II, an online graduate course. 


Lisa McLendon, Bremner Editing Center coordinator, presented a session at ACES: The Society for Editing’s virtual national conference, Accelerate, on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Her topic, “Grammar Obscura” drew close to 400 attendees.

 

Nathan Pettengill of Sunflower Publications was a guest speaker on Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Lisa McLendon’s JMC 201 class on journalism in Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Pettengill spoke about his time as a journalist for Reuters in Moscow in the 1990s and discussed covering politics, Chechnya and the rise of Vladimir Putin.

Professor opens art exhibit


Assistant Professor Rebekka Schlichting opened an art show with Sydney Pursel, who is a fellow Iowa Tribal member who works as a curator at the Spencer Art Museum. The exhibit is a story of the Ioway people, past and present, told through art loaned by members of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska. "Ioway: Here to Stay" is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., until Oct. 15, 2022, at Iowa, Sac & Fox Mission Museum in Highland, Kansas.

More than 500 students to attend KSPA conference this week


The Kansas Scholastic Press Association will host its first fall conference in three years on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the Kansas Union. More than a dozen staff and faculty members from the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications will present sessions for the high school students attending. KU film professor and Oscar award winner Kevin Willmott will be the keynote speaker. More than 500 students are currently registered with more expected. The Kansas Scholastic Press Association is hosted at KU and supports middle and high school journalism students along with their teachers.

The Kansas City Area Development Center is bringing KC Heartland to the University of Kansas from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the KU Memorial Union. This is an opportunity for students to chat one on one with young professionals living and working in Kansas City. Admission is free. Register here.


The Lewis Scholarship is a new scholarship program that will provide free housing and a monthly stipend to support student journalists of color who plan to intern at news media outlets in Washington, D.C., beginning in 2023. The Lewis Scholarship has an estimated value of $10,000 and will be awarded to one undergraduate student journalist of color each fall, spring and summer semester. The scholarship will provide a stipend of $1,000 a month and free housing provided through Washington Intern Student Housing for the duration of the student’s internship, usually four months. The KU Public Relations Student Society of America will meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 12 in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 303. A guest speaker will discuss why Nike is so successful and will look at a few PR fails.

EVENTS

Patricia Gaston, the Lacy C. Haynes Professor of Journalism, will be one of the leaders of a new virtual series this fall at the University of Kansas that will ask important questions about the threats that misinformation and disinformation pose to democracy. The series will be led by Najarian Peters, KU associate professor of law and faculty associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School; Patricia Weems Gaston, who is a former editor at The Washington Post; and Emily Ryan, director of The Commons at KU. The series begins at 7 p.m. Sept. 28.

J-School alumna and FBI analyst to speak at virtual event Oct. 4


Rebecca Rumptz, j’17, an intelligence analyst for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, will speak virtually to KU Intelligence Community Center for Academic Excellence (ICCAE) students at 4 p.m. Oct. 4. Rumptz has over 14 years of experience in all-source intelligence analysis, and information, physical and personnel security procedures.
