Coming Homecoming Weekend: J-School Alumni Takeover

Students, join us for our Alumni Takeover event on Friday, Sept. 30, during KU’s annual Homecoming weekend! You’ll have the opportunity to meet some of our amazing J-School alumni, network and get great advice from professionals who are invested in helping you succeed. We will be offering a variety of programming from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., including alumni presentations related to careers in each of our concentrations. INSIDE THE SCHOOL

Professor of the Practice Angie Hendershot has been selected as the recipient of the 2022-2023 KU Edwards Campus Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. This award is based on the chosen faculty member’s outstanding quality and innovation in teaching and dedication to students. Stuart Day, dean of the KU Edwards Campus, presented the award to her during the campus Fall Kickoff event Friday, Sept. 2.

RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS

Associate Professor Carol Holstead's article, "Why Students Are Skipping Class So Often, and How To Bring Them Back," was published in the Chronicle of Higher Education on Sept. 1. Read the story.


Associate Professor Teri Finneman, along with Will Mari of Louisiana State and Kristen Hare of Poynter, won a national award from the Oral History Association for their multimedia oral history project examining the effect of COVID-19 on rural newsrooms in seven states in middle America during the initial months of the pandemic. The project is featured on the Poynter website


Finneman also will be a featured speaker at the Mississippi Press Association conference in 2023 to discuss her grant research examining a new business model for weekly newspapers.

KU PRSSA to meet Sept. 14


The KU Public Relations Student Society of America will meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 14 in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 303. All journalism students are welcome to attend and learn more about the PRSSA’s plans and officer positions for 2022-23. Pizza will be provided.

Annalise Baines, J-School doctoral candidate, and Pamela Peters, J-School doctoral student, join host Fernanda Silva, J-School master’s student, on the Grad Path podcast. They are discussing Themes and Teams: How to decide on the subject for your research, how to work in teams to be more productive, and is it OK if the research interest changes along the way? The Wall Street Journal is now accepting applications for 2023 newsroom internships in the United States. Fourteen types of internship opportunities are available, including reporting, video, podcasting, graphics, audience engagement and more. The Student Alumni Leadership Board will host a Mocktails and Mingle event from 2 to 4 p.m., Sept. 7 at McLain’s, 1420 Crescent Road. The leadership board connects with thousands of KU alumni.


Registration is open for Spark KC 2022. The 9 a.m.-3 p.m. event on Sept. 23 at VMLY&R, 250 NW Richards Road, features guest speakers, panels and one-on-ones with top Kansas City advertising leaders. The professionals will review resumes and portfolios. The cost is $45. An early-bird rate of $35 is available before Sept. 13. Get information and register here.

Pulliam Journalism Fellowship recruiter to interview students

Six interview slots are available for the Pulliam Journalism Fellowship virtual interviews on Saturday, Sept. 17. The 10-week journalism fellowship has paid positions in news, sports reporting, digital, social media, visuals and audio available with The Arizona Republic and Indianapolis Star. College juniors, seniors and graduate students enrolled at KU are eligible to interview. To schedule a time between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., contact Steve Rottinghaus.

The J-School Career Fair is six weeks away! All students are welcome to attend from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 20 at Stauffer-Flint Hall. On the Job: Stef Manchen, j'22


Stef Manchen, who was editor of The University Daily Kansan and worked at KUJH, graduated from the J-School in May and now is morning anchor at News-Press NOW in St. Joseph, Missouri. "I wouldn't have that opportunity if KU didn't have such great relationships with so many professional institutions not just across the state but throughout the nation," she said. Join the History of Black Writing on Sept. 15 at 5:30 p.m. as Dawn Duke discusses Afro-Latinx literature in a talk that draws on her forthcoming book “Mayaya Rising.” Dr. Duke will deliver her talk virtually from Brazil.
