Greetings!
Thank you for all your participation last week: from taking the time to join in conference conversations, communicating about your after school care needs, to lending a hand or joining in the fun of our October Festival on Friday night. It's more fun and productive when we're all in this together!
Happy Monday,
Nelia

| Please be sure to label your child(ren)'s layers, hats, mittens, and water bottles. We are going into the cold weather season where there are a lot more items falling off hooks, being left on the porches or in the barn, and more. We could save a lot of staff time and assembly time if we don't have to hold it up in front of everyone and hope for a owner to claim it, which doesn't happen as often as you might think! If you'd like to order stickers to make it easier, Riverside will get a portion of the sales from Mabel's Labels. | | SKATING AND GYMNASTICS - form, please submit | | |
This Friday afternoon we will begin our K-8 skating and gymnastics program. Parents and siblings are welcome to join us at any location between 2:00-3:00 pm on these dates. Please know that there is a lot of learning involved in this program besides just sliding on ice and tumbling on mats. See the picture here for more explanation of what the teachers are trying to coach different grade levels on and please support us from home.
PERMISSION: Please complete this permission form for gymnastics as soon as possible. You can download it here and complete it digitally and email it back, or print it, and we will also send hard copies home with all students today.
Because Kingdom Gymnastics is hosting a meet and can't welcome us on November 13, the schedule is a little quirky. Please mark your calendars for pick up at 3:15 at the the location according to your child(ren)'s house:

EQUIPMENT: For ice skating, we require all students to wear a helmet of some kind, as well as hats, mittens/gloves, and at least a 2nd layer on top. If needed, both hockey and figure skates are available for rent at the rink, and that $5 charge will be put on your monthly school store account. Krystal pulled two high quality pairs of figure skates (size 2 and 2.5) from the yard sale, and they are up for grabs in her office. K-2 families will find an equipment check-in in their boomerang folders this week to facilitate direct communication with teachers.

Apparel order forms are going home with students (youngest siblings) today; you can see an image of that form here. If you'd like to purchase any Riverside gear, please complete that form and return it to Krystal by Monday, November 9. Orders will be available for pick up in mid December. Note that if your plan is to give gifts to students, there's a place to tell us so on the form and we will keep those secret.
Thank you so much to Krystal and parent Claudia Lechuga (3rd grader Lazlo, 5th grader Weldon, 8th grader Eula) for all the work they put into planning and designing this order.
| | If your child was absent on school picture day or you don't like how the photo turned out, retakes will be on Tuesday, November 10. Those having their pictures taken in November should return any first-round prints, uncut, in the order envelope to Krystal. | | We will celebrate Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11 with a special assembly and also a brief field trip for 1-8th graders to the traditional ceremony in downtown Lyndonville, where middle school chorus will perform the "Star Spangled Banner" and Nathan will play "Taps" on his trumpet. | | 6-8 ENGLISH LONG TERM SUB | |
We're happy to share an update on our middle school English program. While 3rd grade teacher Natalie Dalpe teaches 6th grade English, Molly Moore '13 has enthusiastically accepted a position as long-term substitute for 7th grade Humanities and 8th grade English.
Molly is a strong advocate for the Riverside programming and experiences that she credits with making a huge difference in her life and helping shape the person she is today. She is excited to share with our middle school students the same kinds of learning experiences that made such an impact on her. Since graduating from Riverside, Molly graduated from SJA and earned a BA in PR and Communications and in Musical Theater from American University. She has worked in Vermont politics as a campaign manager and an aide to the speaker of the house as well as serving on Riverside's Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees. Molly also has deep interests in music and drama. We are happy for Molly to become part of our teaching team and look forward to the contributions she'll make.
Our intention is to post the full position soon, form a hiring committee, and search until we find the best possible teacher for Riverside. That individual could start in the second semester or next fall.
| | If you have extra Halloween candy at your house that you'd like to donate, we are collecting it for the Treats for Troops program in Krystal's office. | | |
K-8 SKIING AND RIDING
We typically take all K-8th graders off campus by bus on Friday afternoons in January and February, and ask families to make the choice if their child will be going cross-country skiing on the Dashney Trails OR downhill skiing/riding at Burke Mountain. On those Friday afternoons (January 8, 15, 22, 29, February 5, 12) pick up will be at those locations, students are not transported back to school. There is no K-8 Extended Day Program on these dates.
Please keep an eye out in the coming weeks for more detail and a link to the forms for each program. Filling one of those out will indicate your child(ren)'s choices for the winter and give us all of the information we need to move ahead with planning.
Regarding Downhill Equipment: Burke is offering full season equipment rentals to students for $149 this year. Information about that can be found here. Outfitters in Newport and Montpelier may have different rates. Daily rentals will also be available at Burke on our Fridays there, and a total of $90 will be charged to your school store account.

FOURTH GRADERS JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER
The 4th Grade is hosting a Math-a-thon for students in grades K-5 to benefit the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. This is a fun and educational way to teach students how to make a positive difference for something they care about. Every dollar raised helps ensure that families never have to pay for treatment, travel, housing or food while a patient of St. Jude's. This math-a-thon fundraiser will be active for the month of November. Be on the lookout for an informational page in your child's folder this week. Thank you, in advance, for helping our 4th graders learn this important lesson about serving others and for helping the children of St. Jude's. More information will go home with students on Wednesday. If you have any questions, please contact Caroline.
