NOTES

6-8 ENGLISH LONG TERM SUB

We're happy to share an update on our middle school English program. Molly Moore '13 has enthusiastically accepted a position as long-term substitute!. Molly has remained a strong advocate for the Riverside programming and experiences that she credits with making a huge difference in her life and helping shape the person she is today. She is excited to share with our middle school students the same kinds of learning experiences that made such an impact on her. Since graduating from Riverside ,Molly graduated from SJA; and earned a BA in PR and Communications, and Musical Theater from American University. She has worked in Vermont politics as a campaign manager and an aide to the speaker of the house as well as serving on Riverside's Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees. Molly also has deep interests in music and drama. We are happy for Molly to become part of our teaching team and look forward to the contributions she'll make.

Our intention is to post the full position soon, form a hiring committee, and search until we find the best possible teacher for Riverside. That individual could start in the second semester or next fall.

EARLY DISMISSALS THIS WEEK

There will be an early dismissal for all students at 12:30 on October 28 and 29 for Family Conferences. The Preschool Afterschool and K-8 Extended Day programs will be running from dismissal time at 12:30 until 4:15 for PreK and 5:00 for K-8. If your child will be attending on either of those days, even if they regularly attend, please email McKenna or fill out this form for Sean. It's really important that we be able to plan staffing, snacks, and activities carefully for these longer, more popular afternoons.

RIVERSIDE APPAREL ORDERS

Apparel order forms are going home with students (youngest siblings) today; you can see an image of that form here. If you'd like to purchase any Riverside gear, please complete that form and return it to Krystal by Monday, November 9. Orders will be available for pick up in mid December. Note that if your plan is to give gifts to students that there's a place to tell us so on the form and we will keep those secret.

Thank you so much to Krystal and parent Claudia Lechuga (3rd grader Lazlo, 5th grader Weldon, 8th grader Eula) for all the work they put into planning and designing this order.

5-8 RIVERSIDE SOCCER

The season has come to an end, thank you to everyone who cheered on the team, drove carpools to away games, and brought snacks for the team. Thank you especially to Sean and Ty for coaching this team throughout the season with a focus on positive spirit and growth.

Please return clean jerseys to Ty by Wednesday.

PICTURES and RE-TAKES

School photo prints are going home today with students. If your child was absent on school picture day or you don't like how the photo turned out, retakes will be on Tuesday, November 10. Those having their pictures taken in November should return any first-round prints, uncut, in the order envelope to Krystal.

PK-8 FAMILY CONFERENCES

If you haven't yet, please grab one of the last open slots for conference meetings at the end of this week!

HALLOWEEN AT RIVERSIDE - FRIDAY

DURING SCHOOL

To celebrate during the school day, students are welcome to wear costumes to school, and we will have our traditional costume parade in morning assembly and giant-pumpkin hunt with our buddies.

Note that we expect reasonable amounts of candy to be shared among class groups, and for this to likely continue into Monday-Tuesday of next week. We ask that students be kind and fair with any candy they bring to school.

We hope that students will consider how costumes might be distracting to others during the school day, and plan accordingly. Too much bloody makeup might scare or offend someone else, making light of a cultural group might cause misunderstanding, and accessories that distract from classroom learning might need to be removed. We also recognize and understand that not all families celebrate halloween, and will strive to make sure those students are supported and apporpriately included. during these festivities.

AFTER HALLOWEEN

If you have more candy at your house after the holiday than you want, Caroline will be collecting it for Treats for Troops.

K-8 SKATING AND GYMNASTICS

On Friday afternoons in November and December we will take K-8th graders to the Fenton Chester Arena for ice skating and to Kingdom Gymnastics for open gym time. Our goals with this program are to expand students PE skills in sport-specific areas, collaborate with local organizations, and continue building cross-grade relationships between students. This is also an excellent way for teachers to build new relationships with students outside of academics. Parents and siblings are welcome to join us at any location between 2:00-3:00 pm on these dates.

Because Kingdom Gymnastics is hosting a meet and can't welcome us on November 13, the schedule is a little quirky. Please mark your calendars for pick up at 3:15 at the the location according to your child(ren)'s house:

  • Friday, November 6: Ignis, Caelum, and Terra groups A&B (details below) will go skating, and Aqua and Terra group C will do gymnastics.
  • Friday, November 13: all K-8th graders will go skating
  • Friday, November 20: Early Dismissal for all students at Riverside, 12:30
  • Friday, December 4: Aqua, Caelum, and Terra groups A&C (details below) will go skating, and Ignis and Terra group B will do gymnastics.
  • Friday, December 11: Ignis, Aqua, and Terra groups B&C (details below) will go skating, and Caelum and Terra Group A will do gymnastics.
  • Friday, December 18: K-5th graders have Early Dismisssal from Riverside at 12:30; 6-8th graders will go skating, with Early Dismissal from the rink at 12:30

Terra Group A: Montague, Lucas, Royer, Harris, Donn, Wolfe/Whitbread-Hardman/Failor-Bowles

Terra Group B: Stinson, Michalski, Nesbitt, Rath, Meyer, Gillespie, Sacklow

Terra Group C: Lane, Wright, Bouffard, Baker, Kennison, Spring

EQUIPMENT: For ice skating, we ask that all students wear a helmet of some kind, as well as hats, mittens/gloves, and at least a 2nd layer on top. If needed, both hockey and figure skates are available for rent at the rink, and that $5 charge will be put on your monthly school store account. Krystal pulled two high quality pairs of figure skates (size 2 and 2.5) from the yard sale, and they are up for grabs in her office. K-2 families will find an equipment check-in in their boomerang folders this week to facilitate direct communication with teachers.

K-8 SKIING AND RIDING

We typically take all K-8th graders off campus by bus on Friday afternoons in January and February, and ask families to make the choice of their child will be going cross-country skiing on the Dashney Trails OR downhill skiing/riding at Burke Mountain. On those Friday afternoons (January 8, 15, 22, 29, February 5, 12) pick up will be at those locations, students are not transported back to school.

Please keep an eye out in the coming weeks for more detail and a link to the forms for each program. Filling one of those out will indicate your child(ren)'s choices for the winter and give us all of the information we need to move ahead with planning.

A couple of notes for now:

  • Regarding Burke Season Passes: This year's School Programs for downhill at Burke does not include a season pass; if you'd like your child to have one you should purchase those separately while rates are still low. Having a season pass will save Riverside the cost of your child(ren)'s lift ticket on Fridays, and we will ask you in the forms mentioned above to let us know if they do.
  • Regarding Downhill Equipment: Burke is offering full season equipment rentals to students for $149 this year. Information about that can be found here. Outfitters in Newport and Montpelier may have different rates. Daily rentals will also be available at Burke on our Fridays there, and a total of $90 will be charged to your school store account.

FOURTH GRADERS JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

The 4th Grade is hosting a Math-a-thon for students in grades K-5 to benefit the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. This is a fun and educational way to teach students how to make a positive difference for something they care about. Every dollar raised helps ensure that families never have to pay for treatment, travel, housing or food while a patient of St. Judes. This math-a-thon fundraiser will be active for the month of November. Be on the lookout for an informational page in your child's folder this week. Thank you, in advance, for helping our 4th graders learn this important lesson about serving others and for helping the children of St. Jude.
