KSPA contest needs judges
The Kansas Scholastic Press Association needs your help to judge the regional high school journalism contest this month. Judging is online. Judges will receive contest entries on Feb. 23, which need to be completed and submitted by 5 p.m. Feb. 26. Sign up here.
RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo, doctoral students Matt Blomberg and Darcey Altschwager, and undergraduate students Ellie Booton and Maxine Nwachukwu co-authored a paper, "COVID-19 and the Digital Divide: Interviews with Women Recently Released from Prison," which has been accepted for presentation at the 2021 International Communication Association conference.

Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo and doctoral student Yuchen Liu and Muhammad Ittefaq co-authored a paper, "COVID-19 Pandemic and International Students: A Mixed-Methods Approach to Social Media, Social Support & Mental Health," which has been accepted for presentation at the 2021 International Communication Association conference. The other authors are Husain Ebrahim at Kuwait University and Donghwa Chung at Peking University.

Associate Professor Genelle Belmas has been appointed to the selection committee for the Stonecipher Award, an annual award given to the best published research on freedom of expression jurisprudence or policy given by the AEJMC Law & Policy Division. 

Associate Professor Teri Finneman and co-author Will Mari were accepted into the International Communication Association conference with their project “Community Journalism and COVID-19: Newspaper Challenges and Innovations."
 
Associate Professor Teri Finneman and co-author Ryan Thomas had their paper, “Our Company is in Survival Mode”: Metajournalistic Discourse on COVID-19’s Impact on U.S. Community Newspapers," accepted by Journalism Practice.
STUDENT NEWS & OPPORTUNITIES
J-School senior Genna Foster interviewed Matt Gardner, 'j01, who is vice president, digital media and emerging technology, for the St. Louis Blues. Foster's interview was part of the KU Alumni Association Student Alumni Network's Focus Fridays. Watch the interview here.
More than 230 J-School students earned at least a 3.75 GPA last semester to be listed on the J-School’s honor roll.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is conducting a study examining student impressions of remote learning experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey results may be helpful in determining the most effective ways to use remote online learning to benefit college students. Take the survey here.

Applications are now being accepted for the KC Ad Club's Foundation Scholarship. Winners receive:
  • Financial assistance of $1,500 per year (paid in $750 per semester increments)
  • A mentor, who will be a working professional in the area of the business the student is interested in pursuing
  • Free membership in AAF-KC
  • Free admission to every AAF-KC event, excluding the American Advertising Awards

Universitywide career fair next week
The Career & Internship Expo for all University of Kansas students is 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Feb. 17. The virtual event, coordinated by the University Career Center, will occur on the careerfairplus.com platform. Among the most prestigious in news, the Murrow Awards recognize local and national news stories that uphold the RTDNA Code of Ethics, demonstrate technical expertise and exemplify the importance and impact of journalism as a service to the community. J-School Career Fair
The virtual career fair is set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. March 4. Student registration opens Feb. 22. Students will be able to submit resumes in advance and schedule multiple interviews and informational sessions with selected organizations through the CareerFair Plus app. Before the fair, students are encouraged to research the companies. Chris Cobler, j'82, is publisher and chief executive officer for Fort Worth Report, a new online publication being launched in Fort Worth, Texas, that will focus on local government, schools and other civic issues. Read the news story here.

Spencer Gray, j'19, is marketing coordinator for The Zin Team at Cross Country Mortgage.

Rachel Phelan, j'20, was a guest speaker via Zoom in the J611: Sales Strategies class on Feb. 1. Phelan is director of marketing and communications at the United Way of the Greater Chippewa Valley in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Phelan, who was a student in the Sales Strategies class last spring, discussed how, through networking and persistence, her job search after graduation led her to the Greater Chippewa Valley United Way. 

Jeff Bollig, 1984 J-School minor, is co-author of “The Dream is Real” with former KU broadcaster Bob Davis, Voice of the Jayhawks from 1984 to 2016. The book recounts Davis’ 48-year broadcasting career, featuring contributions from more than 50 coaches, athletes, broadcasting peers, friends and more, including Kansas basketball coaches Larry Brown, Roy Williams and Bill Self, and football coaches Glen Mason and Mark Mangino. The book is available at select Dillons across Kansas and multiple online outlets, including Amazon.com.
Another Super Bowl for Kevin Harlan
Kevin Harlan, j'82, called his 12th consecutive Super Bowl yesterday for the Westwood One radio network. Listen to his interview with KCUR last week. Harlan is a fan favorite not just for his play by play but also for his descriptive calls of on-field surprises, such as one that happened at the Super Bowl last night. Listen to Harlan's call here.
