Last week we learned about Self-Talk, which is the first foundational skill for self-control. 


The second foundational skill is Planning Ahead. This means that we plan with the child how they will act in a given situation.
How do we implement this skill?
Social Stories that let children know about an upcoming event say camp, and how they’re expected to behave in camp, are a classic example of Planning Ahead. (see linked social story)
Quick little tip:
Make sure to mention the natural rewards and positive outcomes that might happen if the child uses self-control in the given situation. For example, if the child is being prepped for camp, mention in the social story that following all camp rules will likely result in the child being invited again to camp the next summer.
