Message from Dr. Erwin

Every week at Holy Trinity has a story. Last week was one that started out with promise and excitement, took a turn into a moment of frenetic energy, and ended with the calm of snow. Monday and Tuesday were wonderful days. The frigid temperatures meant red cheeks after recess. On Wednesday, we discovered cases of lice in two grades—Kindergarten and 2nd grade. We followed all necessary procedures and notifications. By the end of the day, we were relieved—and, honestly, hopeful for a snow day. Wednesday after dismissal, I left for a Catholic school principals’ retreat in Silverton, though I was a bit wary of the weather.  At 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, I woke up to see Beaverton School District’s snow closure announcement. We worked to quickly send out the messages about our closure and I hopped in my car for home. I hope the snow days gave your family some time for fun and to take a pause from the routine events that fill our days. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Tuesday morning.

Virtue: Gratitude

Gratitude is at the heart  of our Catholic faith and who we are as a school.  At Holy Trinity, we have so much to be grateful for. It is inspiring to take time to pause, notice, celebrate, and express our gratitude.  Pope Francis beautifully explains the power of gratitude.

“when we are thankful to God for all He has given us, our gratitude spills into our relationships. It helps cement bonds of friendship and shows the interior nature of the giver. The virtue of gratitude frees us from selfishness, isolation, and loneliness and helps us understand that we are made for each other and to live in community.”

Here are some concrete ways we can cultivate the virtue of gratitude in our daily lives:

  • Say "thank you" to others
  • Be thankful for the people around us and the work they do for us
  • Respond with thanks to those who are good to you
  • Express gratitude through prayer
  • Look for ways to express gratitude to people we encounter every day

Our gratitudes

  • Thank you to our parents who show up so quickly when a child becomes ill at school.
  • Our staff step up in ways big and small every day.  Last week during our lice challenge, so many staff jumped in to help.
  • Grateful for our communications team: Kirsten Goetz, Administrative Assistant and our two social media posters Laura Folkerth and Welo Cao.  They keep us posted about all sorts of events and news.
  • We are so blessed to have the 8th grade class leading us every day.  They offered mass on Wednesday, give tours, lead afternoon prayer before dismissal, do our paper recycling, organize our assemblies, and are wonderful servant leaders.

Service

I heard from members of the Legion of Mary that they will be making some improvements to the garden of Mary by the entrance. That work is coming in the spring.

A small group of Third grader spend time packing items for children at NW Children’s Outreach. They are hoping to serve again sometime in lent so more families/students can join.

Congratulations!

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Youth Leadership Medal is awarded to middle school students who exemplify “the qualities of citizenship Americans must possess if our country is to remain sovereign and independent.” These qualities include kindness, strong moral principles, cooperation, determination, good sportsmanship, and responsibility.

Each year, the Beaverton DAR chapter selects one middle school nominee from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. This year, all three awards were presented to Holy Trinity students—a remarkable reflection of our student body’s character and the dedication of our teachers, who know their students so well that they can submit such thoughtful and personal nominations. Congratulations to Ainsley Brown, Ronan McCall, and Juliana DeBlois on this well-deserved honor!

Mr. Dalton cheers on the 7th grade boys CYO basketball team.

Titan Time

During last Tuesday’s Titan Time, students shared with each other what they love about Holy Trinity School. Fourth grade created quite a list.

Students also shared what they love to do outside of school.  This image captures what our students love to do.

UPDATE: Emergency Communications

There are some additions to our communications for emergencies put in place during to the two snow days.  Here is a list of our communication after an emergency or inclement weather.

  • Email staff
  • Email/text to families
  • Flash Alert message to all media outlets  Shows on scroll at the bottom of news broadcasts
  • Image on our webpage
  • Social media posts
  • Messaging to after school activities

Lice protocol

Last week we had confirmed cases of lice in two classrooms. We followed the state guidelines in responding. In addition, the two classes did not attend mass on Wednesday and released for dismissal directly from their classrooms.

Here is the guidance we sent to families about Lice prevention and treatment.

As per Oregon statute, we do not exclude students from school for lice. When a student is found to have lice we call home, bag up all of their school things and they go home for the day. If you have any questions contact the office or Dr. Erwin.

We encourage all families to check for lice and treat per these guidlines if found. Thank you!
