With the release of new flood maps in our state, residents and business owners may find that their flood risk has changed. To help better understand these changes, FEMA is hosting a free 2-hour online workshop on how map changes can affect building and flood insurance requirements and insurance options tomorrow.

In a series of last minute efforts by President Biden and members of Congress to extend the eviction moratorium, leading members of Congress contended that it “will not be sufficient,” because the Senate would not have the means to approve a bill. This closed off any legislation that would have extended the moratorium.

NAR has spent its time educating members of Congress that extending the eviction moratorium is not the answer. “NAR is prepared to oppose vigorously any unreasonable effort by Congress to extend the ban without assistance for small housing providers,” says Shannon McGahn, chief advocacy officer for NAR. “We have argued all along that the best solution for all parties is rental assistance for tenants in need paid directly to housing providers. Nearly half of all rental housing in America is a mom-and-pop operation, and these providers cannot continue to live in a state of financial hardship.”

OKCMAR Government Affairs Committee Chair Glen Cosper agreed, “We have got to get funds that have already been transferred to states and communities more effectively distributed to renters and landlords. OKCMAR will continue to push for more education efforts to renters and landlords about accessing the funds and the need to get payments expedited as fast as possible. This will help keep folks from being evicted.”

The Oklahoma City metro area has fared better than other areas of the country. Thanks to the partnership created by the state and local governments, the Community Cares Partners program has been actively assisting those in need. Approximately 9,000 households and over 1,400 landlords have been helped with over $35 million distributed. Those who have applied have found the process easy and helpful. The program has an application approval rate of 97%.

Major Investor Event Continues 2021 RPAC Success

OKCMAR has another successful event in the 2021 RPAC journey. Close to 50 members came out to sign up more RPAC Major Investors and to hear Tulsan Holli Woodward, current NAR Participation Chair. Both goals were met. OKCMAR added six more Major Investors who donated over $1,000 to RPAC and current Major Investor Vanessa Johnson was inspired to do more by giving $1500 more to support RPAC.

The event was held at Stockyards City's McClintock Saloon, a venue that appropriately fits the western theme for this year’s RPAC program. Those in attendance enjoyed the chance to get out and meet others who are major supporters of RPAC and some great food and drinks.

The excitement rose through the evening as each Major Investor who signed up at the event was asked to ring the bell, continuing an OKCMAR tradition started two years ago.

RPAC Programs Chair JT Brown stated, “This has been a fun year. We are not only raising much needed funds for RPAC but having fun along the way. We cannot express our gratitude to the OKCMAR membership for their support this year.”

Thanks to the work of the current RPAC volunteers, OKCMAR is still on track to have one of the best years ever. OKCMAR only needs $13,000 to reach our fundraising goal. We are only 39 members short of reaching our participation goal of a majority of the membership having invested RPAC this year.

The next RPAC event, and last one of the year, is the End of Year RPAC Bash on

September 9th.
