Valley Health is Celebrating 50 Years! | |

Valley Health Systems is excited to announce the celebration of its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of dedicated service to patients and communities across the region. Founded in 1975, Valley Health has evolved from a small organization with three sites into a comprehensive healthcare system with more than 60 locations, providing vital health services to tens of thousands of patients each year.
Since its inception to address a critical shortage of primary care physicians, Valley Health Systems has remained committed to its mission of improving the health and well-being of the communities it serves. The organization has adapted and expanded its services to meet the ever-changing needs of the population, embracing advancements in medical technology and evolving into new models of patient care.
In celebration of this momentous occasion, Valley Health Systems held an anniversary kick off at our Pea Ridge Health Center Wednesday, January 15th. The 50th Anniversary celebration will continues with a yearlong campaign of 50 Acts of Kindness, a community talent show, our annual Back to School event, and a celebration of our amazing staff. Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 8th, 2025, and join us at Willow Ridge Events (6330 US Route 60, Barboursville, WV) for the 24th Annual Valentine Celebration, hosted by the Developmental Therapy Center. This exciting event supports our mission to provide life-changing therapy services to children and families across the Tri-State area.
The evening kicks off with a high-energy Lip Sync Battle, featuring the Huntington Police Department lip-syncing and dancing to an epic 90s/2000s mash-up. They will set the tone for the night by kicking off the battle in spectacular fashion!
The encore performance will showcase Hometown KISS, a group of community leaders coming together for a memorable show. Taking the stage are:
Brad Smith, Marshall University’s President, Co-Founder of the Wing 2 Wing Foundation, and former executive leader; Toney Stroud, Chief Legal Officer and Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Corporate Relations at Marshall University; Barry Burgess, CPA, CGMA, Member at Suttle & Stalnaker, PLLC; and Jimmy Lundy, Owner of Specialty Systems Electric.
The celebration will also include a silent auction, guest games, an open bar, dancing, and exciting door prizes.

Major Alston Named Vice President and
Chief Development Officer of the
Marshall University Foundation

Major Alston, a highly accomplished fundraising executive with more than 20 years of experience, has been named vice president and chief development officer of the Marshall University Foundation. Alston serves as the university’s senior officer for philanthropy, working closely with university leaders and volunteers to guide the work of philanthropy. Alston began his tenure Nov. 18.
Alston formerly served as senior associate vice president of advancement and campaign director at Ohio University, where he led a development team of 30 in their effort to launch the largest comprehensive campaign in university history. Prior to his tenure at Ohio University, Alston served at the University of Cincinnati as assistant vice president for regional development, where he was responsible for development and alumni engagement for the west coast.

Mountwest Community and Technical College Recognized as a National Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense | |

Mountwest Community and Technical College’s Associate of Applied Science degree program - Network and Cloud Systems Administration has been recognized as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD). This designation demonstrates Mountwest’s commitment to providing high-quality education and training in the rapidly evolving field of cybersecurity.
The CAE-CD honor is awarded to regionally accredited institutions offering cybersecurity programs. To achieve this recognition, the program had to meet rigorous standards set by the National Security Agency (NSA) demonstrating excellence in curriculum design, faculty expertise, and commitment to preparing students for careers in the critical and growing field of cyber defense.
Mountwest is the second community college in West Virginia to receive this esteemed designation. This achievement will not only attract more students to the program but it enhances marketability, expands funding opportunities, and also ensures graduates are well-equipped to meet the needs of the cybersecurity industry.
