Mayor Farrell Introduces Housing Incentive to Grow Huntington

Mayor Patrick Farrell’s proposal to create new housing incentives in Huntington advanced Monday night when the City Council Finance Committee voted to approve the measure. The ordinance now heads to the full Council for consideration.

The ordinance would exempt new construction of 1–8 unit residential housing from the City’s Business and Occupation (B&O) tax. It would also provide the same exemption for substantial renovations on existing homes if completed within six months of a sale. Mayor Farrell said the measure is part of the broader Live Huntington initiative the City is rolling out, aimed at growing Huntington by making it a place where families can live.

“Huntington has so much to offer. We have great hospitals, a growing university, new industries, the best parks in the state, and the best people anywhere. More than 24,000 people commute here every day for work. What we don’t have is enough housing. This ordinance creates an incentive to build and renovate homes so families can live where they work,” Mayor Farrell said.

According to the City’s 2024 Housing Needs Assessment, Huntington currently faces a shortage of more than 2,800 units, including both rentals and homes for sale. This ordinance is one step toward closing that gap.

“Jobs follow workers, and workers need housing. That’s how we grow Huntington. Live Huntington is our roadmap, a partnership with City Hall, community leaders, and employers all pulling in the same direction. When we align our priorities, we turn potential into growth,” Mayor Farrell said.

The full City Council will vote on whether to approve the ordinance during its meeting on September 22, 2025.

The Sandy Ridge Update for August/September

Preview MAMC’s New 3D Printing Technology During Sept. 9 Meet Up

Tech Talk Tuesdays return to the Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC) Sept. 9with a focus on new 3D printing technology available for use in the Maker Vault, MAMC’s community makerspace.

People of all ages are invited to join Maker Vault/STEM Coordinator Tyler Brandstetter from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at MAMC Huntington (1050 Fourth Ave.) for a discussion about the capabilities and versatility of MAMC’s new Prusa XL 3D printer. Participants will have the opportunity to see the Prusa in action and ask questions about how this printer differs from traditional additive manufacturing technology.

The five-head Prusa is faster than most desktop 3D printers, has a larger build size at 14.17” x 14.17” x 14.17” and is capable of printing in multi-colors and with multi-materials – at the same time! In addition, it offers zero-waste printing and open-source software.

“Not only does the Prusa print with traditional 3D printing filaments such as PLA and PETG, but also carbon fiber-infused polymers and other advanced materials,” Brandstetter said. “Perhaps more remarkably, it can print with both rigid and pliable materials and fuse the two together to create bendable joints and the like.”

Aficionados of 3D printing, students, techies, hobbyists, makers of all type – and just the curious – are invited to join the informal Tech Talk. There is no cost to participate.

For more information, contact Brandstetter at tyler.brandstetter@mfg.marshall.edu or 304-781-1624.
