Governor Phil Murphy's first official action as New Jersey governor was to sign an executive order on January 16 to support equal pay for women by barring managers in state government from asking job applicants about their previous salary. The order is in support of equal pay for women and stretches across all public jobs. Governor Murphy said that he would make it state law if lawmakers in the Democratic-controlled state Legislature sends a bill to his desk that would extend the rule to private businesses.

Additionally, on January 23, Governor Murphy ordered his administration to review New Jersey's medical marijuana program, which he says has been stifled over the past eight years. Murphy says he's asking state government to focus on expanding the medical marijuana program and proposing new rules or repealing those that hamper the program.

"There are a host of worker-related issues, including paid leave and minimum wage, that will most likely see action under Governor Murphy's agenda," stated Richard Scott, NJSA Vice President for Legal & Legislative Affairs. "It is essential that NJSA members attend Law Day 2018 to be fully apprised of new legislative information and the current environment on such issues as sexual harassment, taxes, and legalized marijuana - all issues impacting staffing."
