GOV. CHRISTIE ACTIONS SUPPORTED THE STAFFING INDUSTRY
|
On Friday, July 21, Governor Christie signed
S3176 /
A4898 which changed the base period used to calculate the next years TDI rates. This is a bill that NJSA supported since it would allow insurance companies and staffing firms to plan and budget for the next year's TDI (a payroll-related expense) in the beginning of the fourth quarter rather than in the last few weeks of the year.
Governor Christie also vetoed two bills that would have created a significant hardship on all New Jersey businesses, and especially the staffing industry:
- ACS for A3480, A4119 / S2536: This bill would have prevented employers from asking candidates about their previous salary/compensation history.
- ACS for A4927 / SCS for S3085: This bill would have expanded Family Paid Leave and increased its weekly benefit levels significantly. Taxes on employees (and possibly employers) would definitely have gone up at some point in the future and businesses would be impacted with a significantly higher number of protected staff absences as a result of this legislation.
These proposals are no longer issues that the staffing industry will have to address for the rest of 2017.
BUT...with the general election in November for all elected representatives in state government including Governor, it is predicted that these proposals will be refiled in January 2018. It is critical in this new environment that the staffing industry develops local relationships at the district level with Assembly and Senate representatives to help defeat or amend/improve "bad" legislation in 2018.
The Staffing Industry will not have Governor Christie to veto bad legislation after December 2017!
