LEGISLATIVE ALERT

The Legislature is pushing through an unbelievable increase and expansion of NJ's Family Leave Program!  You need to contact your Assembly and Senate Representatives as soon as possible!

A-4927/S-3085 is being pushed quickly through both houses of the Legislature by the Assembly and Senate Leadership.
  • This bill increases the number of weeks allowed from six to twelve weeks in a 12-month period.
  • It significantly increases the weekly benefit payments (an increase between 35% and 47% depending on the circumstances).
  • It lowers the minimum number of employees that an employer has to have to be covered by the law from 50 to 20.
  • The bill expands the number of circumstances in which Family Leave is authorized.
  • The bill takes away the employer's right to insist on a mutually acceptable schedule for taking leave and substitutes it with an employee's responsibility to give minimum notice to the employer.
  • Lastly, job protection would be now extended to employees on family leave.
Increased use of Family leave by employees represent a significant increase in business expense and lost productivity, especially for smaller NJ employers.

NJSA is opposed to this bill because it dramatically increases benefit payments, leading to the necessity to increase employee taxes when our citizens are already overburdened by taxes.  We also are against the bill since it would further damage New Jersey's ability to attract new employers into this state and support growth of existing businesses.

If this bill doesn't get signed into law in 2017, it certainly will come back up for consideration in 2018.  Each of us needs to start talking to our representatives on this issue now.  Even though it has quickly passed the Assembly along party lines, we need to let all of our representative know our views.

Click here and go to the Key Issue entitled A 4927/S 3085 and click the "Write Your Legislators" button.  If you want more information on this bill and NJSA's Position Paper, click on the "Get More Information" button.

We need everyone in the industry to communicate using NJSA's Legislative Outreach Platform with their Senators and Assembly representatives on this and the other issues.  It is critical the industry is viewed as constructive - balanced in both supporting positive legislation and critical with suggestions of negative legislation.  You can do your part by spending just a few minutes now sending a few emails.  Please remember to send separate emails from every branch location in NJ so you'll have maximum impact.

If you have questions regarding use of NJSA's Legislative Outreach Platform, contact NJSA at 877-797-6572.
