Murphy Signs Individual Health Care Mandate Law
Governor Murphy signed into law a bill that would require New Jersey residents to have health coverage or pay a penalty, making it the second state to enact an individual mandate, after Massachusetts. The law, signed by Murphy on May 30, would essentially adopt the rules of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The law goes into effect Jan. 1, or in roughly seven months, and at the same time that the federal individual mandate is slated to end. New Jersey residents without insurance would have to pay a penalty mirroring the ones put in place under the ACA prior to the repeal.
