SEPT. 20 MEETING RECAP

NJSA's 1st ever open meeting of the Board of Directors on September 20 was attended by nearly 30 members and guests. Members saw how the board operates and offered their suggestions for membership and programs.
 
After the board meeting, the Legal & Legislative committee chaired by Richard Scott of Pro Search Network presented an update on the paid leave and executive compensation laws. Speakers included NJSA General Counsel Marc Freedman of Freedman & Friedland, Patrick Stewart of Public Str ategies Inc., and Christopher Leddy of Becker LLC.


THE WEEK IN TRENTON

NJSA's Lobbyist, Patrick A. Stewart from Public Strategies Impact, has provided members with an update on what is happening in the Trenton and in the state of New Jersey.  This update is available to NJSA Members ONLY in our Legal Resource Library on our website.  Members must be signed in to access the information.  
 
This week's update includes:
  • A bipartisan group of lawmakers has introduced legislation to put some guardrails on state efforts to require online retailers and other remote sellers to collect sales tax from their customers, including exempting retailers with $10 million or less in sales nationwide...
  • Gov. Phil Murphy's administration has reached a deal with several public sector unions that will save the state hundreds of millions of dollars in coming years by making long-sought changes to health care benefits for current and retired educators... 
  • The bad blood lingering from the nasty state budget battle that divided New Jersey's Democrats this summer has spilled over into the party's state convention this week...
  • State Senate President Steve Sweeney said Wednesday evening he doesn't expect tax revenues from the sale of recreational marijuana to be as sizable as some experts have predicted, adding that he's trying to keep the tax rate low enough to beat back the drug's illegal marketplace... 
  • "Proponents of allowing unauthorized immigrants to apply for driver's licenses received a boost this week when state Senate President Stephen Sweeney endorsed the idea, increasing the chances that New Jersey will become the 13th state to allow immigrants without legal status to drive...
