We still have a number of Esperanza Estates phone and address directories available for distribution. If you haven’t received a directory this year, I will be at the Ramada ½ hour before the HOA meeting (12:30 pm) to hand out a free directory. If you have already received one, I will be selling them at $5.00 each.

We are also hosting a Pumpkin Decorating contest.  Your pumpkin can be carved, painted or otherwise decorated. (Please do this in your own home.) There will be prizes for our most artfully designed pumpkins.  We are also encouraging you to wear costumes or other Halloween attire, if you wish to do so.

Thirsty Thursday Moves to Weekly

By popular acclaim, we are changing Thirsty Thursday happy hour to an every Thursday weekly event. No one knows why it was every-other-Thursday. Why do we have to wait two weeks between Thirsty Thursdays....answer is we don't have to wait!

Starting this week, October 16, we will have Thirsty Thursday weekly, 4 pm, at the Ramada. We'll keep the same no-host plan, which means BYOB and snacks, and we all help with the cleanup. Note that Thirsty Thursday would be canceled if it coincided with a Hospitality event.

Hope to see you there!

Book Club

The Book Club met last week and planned our books for November and December.

November.....Give Unto Others, by Donna Leon

A Commissario Guido Brunetti Mystery. Brunetti is forced to confront the price of loyalty, to his past and in his work, as a seemingly innocent request leads him into troubling waters

December.....First Witch of Boston, by Andrea Catalano

A gripping and intimate novel based on the true story of Margaret Jones, the first woman to be found guilty of witchcraft in seventeenth-century Massachusetts.

We decided to adopt an informal discussion format, which we have found works well with our group.

Note: This is a newer book, and the Green Valley Library does not have it yet. It is available through Amazon.

The Book Club meets on the second Tuesday of every month. Our next meeting is November 13, 11 am, at the Ramada. Everyone is welcome!

Caring Connections

Barb McCalpin

Long time Esperanza Estates resident, Barb McCalpin, passed away at her home on October 1. Barb and Joe, her husband, have lived in EE for 20 years. Barb was very active in EE over the years with the Enhancement Committee, Hospitality, and other activities. Joe commented that "Barb had a way of letting you know that she liked and accepted you, and it was genuine." She had many friends in Esperanza Estates. The family is planning their own private remembrance. There will not be a public service. Our most sincere condolences to Joe, their family, and many friends.

I went skydiving for the first time. This guy strapped himself to me, we jumped out of the plane and as we plummeted, he said:

"So, how long have you been an Instructor?"

A blonde got tired of all the blonde jokes…

So one evening, she went home and memorized all the U.S. state capitals.

The next day at the office, a guy started telling a dumb blonde joke — she quickly cut him off:

"I've had it with these blonde jokes! I went home last night and did something probably none of you could do. I memorized every single state capital."

One of the guys challenged her:

"Alright then, what’s the capital of Nevada?"

She proudly replied:

“N.”
