Road Paving

Source: Pima County Department of Transportation

Last week, EE residents on the west side of Esperanza Estates received flyers from Pima County Department of Transportation (PCDOT) announcing upcoming road work.

The letter stated.....

"The improvements will consist of removing portions of the curbs and sidewalks and replacing them with the new pedestrian ramps which comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifications. The work will begin in your area sometime during the new fiscal year of July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023. Once we have a paving schedule and contractor on board, we will send another letter notifying you of the schedule of the Roadway Repair and Pavement Preservation Program work in your area. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact Community Relations staff at 520-724-6410 or by email at roadprojects.@pima.gov.

Please note in the flyer below that "Asphalt Patching" refers the areas where curb work has been done. The rest of the road will be completely milled and paved consistent with the paving schedule to be announced.

Note: If you are unable to read the notice below, please email me, jkhayes70@gmail.com, and I will send you the image.

Caring Connections

Dick Johnston

  • We are sorry to announce that Dick Johnston (Excelso), passed away last week. He and his wife, Pat were at their summer residence in Aurora, CO. They have been winter residents of Esperanza Estates for a number of years. Dick served 26 years in the military, achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel. After the military, Dick worked for Lockheed Martin in Denver. He is survived by his wife, Pat, and two children. A Celebration of Life is planned for October 5 in Hugo, Oklahoma.  Cards can be sent to their Green Valley address.

Green Valley Awareness

From Hugh Rhine

One of the entertainers on our recent Mediterranean Cruise was piano player, Jon Persson, who, as it turned out, is based in Seattle WA. I took advantage of a pause in his performance to offer him my compliments. His response was as one would expect, to thank me. His follow up, though, was less expected. He asked me where I was from, and Jon caught me off guard when he responded that he had visited Green Valley last year at Thanksgiving. I have to observe that Green Valley has somewhat more awareness than I would have guessed.

Good to Know

Toad Trauma

Source: Green Valley News, July 22, 2022

For those in the area that may be unaware, Colorado River toads can be deadly to dogs if they ingest the poisonous toxin toads can secrete from glands on their body. Unfortunately, Sir Bogie, a 4-year-old Shih Tzu-Yorkie mix, and his owner Noma Nel Hayden found this out the hard way. Did you know that all toads are frogs, but not all frogs are toads? I know, it's confusing. This information from Wildlife Preservation Canada explains why.
