From Debbie Ries

The EE Hospitality Committee is haveing a meeting on Thursday, June 8, 9 am, at the Ramada. The purpose of the meeting is to plan for the Esperanza Estates Fourth of July event.

Thirsty Thursday New Start Time...5 pm

Our next Thirsty Thursday is this Thursday, June 8, at 5 pm. With our warmer weather, moving our start time to 5 pm should be more comfortable in the Ramada. Thursday Thursday is EE's informal, no-host happy hour that we have every other week. It's BYOB, bring a snack to share (if you like), and your own eating utensils. It's a great time to to visit with neighbors and friends. Hope you can join in!

Time to Trim the Palms

From Cyndi Alto

Just another reminder about getting your tall palms trimmed. Thanks to everyone who has already taken care of their palms!

The deadline in Esperanza Estates to have your palm trees trimmed is June 30. The dry fronds are a fire hazard during monsoon season, and a spark can catch them on fire in an instant.

Homeowners can hire anyone they desire to do the work. EE has an agreement with Monstrosity Tree Service for $90/tree which they will honor for everyone in EE. Trees untrimmed by June 30 will be trimmed by the HOA, and homeowners will be billed $100/tree. Please call Cyndie Alto, 509-881-7569, with questions.

Thanks for the pic, Karen Rans

New Dog Waste Drop Off Stations

In a renewed effort to encourage dog walkers to clean up after their pets, EE is testing a few Dog Waste Drop Off Stations in our neighborhood, suggested by EE resident, Tom Kozak. Kevin Welsh built the metal receptacles, and Tom placed them at three locations in EE. Tom is also arranging to have the stations emptied.

There are three Dog Waste Drop Off stations:

  • On the EE trail, just east of the gazebo/pickle ball
  • On Portillo, near the EE trail, across the street from the Ramada/Pool
  • On Napa in Wigham Park, close to the EE trail entrance.

Watch for the stations on your walks. Please bag your dog waste and then drop it in the receptacles, or take it home to your own trash. Let's keep Esperanza Estates "dog poop free!"

What are You Reading This Summer?

From Linda Sielken

I am reading THE EIGHT by Katherine Neville. This is a quote from the back of the book: "Neville's thriller is multilayered in time... A big, juicy quest novel with something for everyone: computer lore, chess, the occult, and ancient curses." It's a good summer read, long and complex. Give it a try.

What are you reading this summer? We'd love to hear your book recommendations. Please send your book suggestions to Judy Hayes, jkhayes70@gmail.com.

Caring Connections

Where's Waldo, the Baby Owlett?

A couple of weeks ago, we posted pictures of the Owl family in a palm tree in Esperanza Estates. They are still there, but sadly one of the babies, the Owlett, now called Waldo, fell out of the nest to the base of the palm tree. Fortunately, Waldo fell into the homeowner's back yard, inside the wall, and is somewhat safe from predators.

Even though he is outside the nest, Waldo's Mom is taking care of him, bringing him food every evening. He's grown a lot according to our Waldo watchers. Everyone is being careful not to disturb Waldo, but he's been seen waddling around a bit, trying to test those little wings. It's inspiring to witness how the Owl family nurtures little Waldo. There is hope in Nature.

Thanks to Jeff and Debbie Ries for the pictures.

History

National History...Juneteenth

From John Nesavich

Juneteenth is the holiday commemorating the end of slavery by marking the day enslaved people in Texas learned they were free.

When reading up on Juneteenth, I was reminded that the Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln, was put into effect in 1863. It ordered that the over 3 million enslaved Black people in the 11 Confederate States, were now legally free. For reference: in 1860, approximately 89% of the Black population was enslaved in all of the USA – this includes the Northern Union states.

Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia got the news.

Texans, it seemed, did not get the news. It was not until 1865 that General Gordon Granger, along with thousands of his troops, stood on the balcony of the Ashton Villa of Galveston, TX and read General Order No. 3:

“The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer."

This happened on June 19th, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was put into effect.

A husband and wife go to a counselor after 15 grueling years of marriage.

The counselor asks them what the problem is, and the wife goes into a tirade listing every problem they have ever had in the 15 years they've been married. She goes on and on and on.

Finally, the counselor gets up, walks around the desk, embraces the wife and kisses her passionately. The woman sits quietly in a daze.

The counselor turns to the husband and says, "This is what your wife needs at least three times a week. Can you do this?"

The husband thinks for a moment and replies, "Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I fish."
