Fourth of July....

Hot Dogs & Ice Cream!!

From Debbie Ries

The Hospitality Committee would like to thank everyone who helped to make the July 4th event so fun! Even with 102 degree weather, we had over 80 attendees to enjoy grilled hot dogs, baked beans, coleslaw, chips and ice cream! Everything was so delicious and appreciated! It was a wonderful way to end our season.

The EE community has always been so great at supporting our monthly events, and we all appreciate your participation.

We look forward to seeing you again in the fall!

P.S. (from the editor) Big Kudos to our Hospitality Committee for all their efforts in putting on great events all year for our EE neighborhood. We are unique in Green Valley to have these wonderful events, and they would not happen without our Hospitality Committee volunteers. Thank you!!

Thirsty Thursday, July 20, 5 pm

Come on over to the Ramada this Thursday, July 20, at 5 pm for Happy Hour with your EE neighbors. The fans in the Ramada actually do help cool things down a bit. Thirsty Thursday is an informal, no-host happy hour. It's BYOB, bring a snack to share (if you like), and your own eating utensils. It's a good time!

Use of Pool/Spa/Ramada Facilities

From Gary Rautio, EE HOA Board of Directors

The following is a list of rules/reminders that have been posted for several years at Pool/Spa/Ramada facility which request that all EE Residents & Guests abide by. However, at this time there are several issues which are not being adhered too, so we the HOA Board request all users to again read the posted signs which identify the rules of the area.

Below are a few of the problems that have become real issues:

  1. The Pool and Spa are both experiencing a problem with an oily firm that floats on the water’s surface and collects on the surrounding tiles.  This oily substance occurs because individuals are not using soap and showering prior to entering the pool and/or spa.  We can not keep the water and tile attractive without all of your help.  Please, please do your part by using soap and showering prior to using the pool &/or spa.

  1. Be aware that plastic items, NOT GLASS bottles or dishes, are allowed in the pool/spa area. These type of articles are permitted only in the Ramada area.

  1. Also, when using the Pool/Spa/Ramada please clean up by putting all trash in the proper containers which are in the Ramada area at the south pool entrance.

  1. Lastly, we ask that everyone remember to sign-in by using the book located in the pool area between the two bath rooms facilities. This action helps us keep track of the number of individuals that daily use the pool/spa facility.

We thank you for your cooperation.

What are You Reading This Summer?

From Hugh Rhine

In the last EE Book Club year, I led a discussion on a book of readings about Stoicism. A key element of stoics is the willingness to give a listen to alternative points of view. Unless one is careful, this could tend to present as being contrarian. Along with this view, here is a list of ten thinker books I've read recently.

The Heretics Handbook, Jonanthan Black

Evil Geniuses, Kurt Anderson

The Secret History of the World, Mark Booth

Mine!, Michael Heller & James Salzman

The Power of Now, Echart Tolle

The Blank Slate, Steven Pinker

Factfulness, Hans Rosleng

The Anatomy of Evil, Michael H Stone, MD

Thinking Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahnoman

The Rational Optimist, Matt Ridley

What are you reading this summer? We'd love to hear your book recommendations. Please send your book suggestions to Judy Hayes, jkhayes70@gmail.com.

Good to Know

Bothersome Robocalls Again and Again

Source: SAV Scam Squad, July 4, 2023

They’re baaaaaack. We aren’t talking about poltergeist. It’s robocalls, those annoying phone calls designed to get you to answer the phone, then get your personal information. Last year Americans were bothered by 50.3 billion illegal robocalls. Many of these calls were made to phone numbers that were on the federal government’s Do Not Call list. And the majority come from overseas scammers through a system known as “gateway providers”.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) may not be able to touch the Russians, Chinese and others who initiate these calls, but it can touch the gateway providers that operate in this country and allow the calls to get to you. On our behalf the FTC is accelerating its effort called Project Point of No Entry. Through this effort the FTC is identifying the gateway providers and taking legal action to force them to stop accepting the robocalls.

While the FTC is tackling the problem you can help yourself by following these tips:

  • Don’t answer calls from unknown numbers. If you do, hang up as soon as you realize it’s a scammer. You don’t have to apologize. Just hang up.
  • Do not respond to any questions. Your voice could be recorded and spliced into another recording. If you answer “yes” to a question you might be electronically agreeing to something you know nothing about.
  • Never give out personal information on a call that you did not initiate to someone you know. This includes Social Security numbers, any account numbers, passwords or password hint answers.
  • Sign up on the Do Not Call list at donotcall.gov.
