SDSU Electrical Team Takes Home Third Place in ASC Student Competition

The San Diego State University (SDSU) Electrical Team placed third out of 14 teams in the ASC Open Student Competition! The team’s chemistry, dedication, and support from their team sponsor/coaches at Helix Electric were factors in securing a trophy this year.

Our team’s success came by learning from the past and not staying down, Team Captain Elizabeth Cravioto Guerra shared. “Despite it being the first ASC competition for most of the team, everyone rose to the occasion and fully committed. But what truly set us apart was our team dynamic. We bonded and formed friendships beyond the competition, allowing us to lean on each other and succeed together.”

This is SDSU’s second win in four years, and the fourth win for the Electrical Team since 2015! Send the Electrical Team some kudos on our Instagram post: Click here.

The ASC Region 6 & 7 Competition is one of the largest student construction competitions in the nation with 241 teams from 57 schools participating. In the crowd were 30 students from San Diego State University! The competition included 19 schools from California alone.

Prior to this major competition, a buzz of excitement filled the air as a crowd of over 1,700 college students waited to enter the kick-off student dinner of the ASC Region 6 & 7 Competition. While that excitement may have transitioned to stress during the competition, the camaraderie between teams and schools was one of support throughout.

This two-day competition puts students in teams of six and provides them with a real‑world construction problem to solve based on each competition category. San Diego State University (SDSU) teams readied to compete in Commercial, Heavy Civil, Preconstruction, and Electrical.

The SDSU students prepared for months with the help and support of AGC’s San Diego Construction Leadership Council (CLC), team sponsors, SDSU faculty advisors, and industry coaches. Special shoutout to our team sponsors and coaches:

Electrical – Helix Electric

Scott Massner, Lia Hodge, Eduardo Nunez, Bryce Kepler, and Noah Sanchez

Commercial - Clark Construction

Josie Dintino, Ryan Henderson, and Mariam Yousif

Heavy Civil – FILANC

Tony Ruiz, Michelle Filanc, Andrea Farias, Edward Chavez, Matt Appleton, Jeff Rangan, and Jessica Gutierrez

Preconstruction - Swinerton

Kyle Butler, Kelsey Maris, Jose Gudino and Rick Collette

A big shoutout to SDSU Faculty Advisors: Thais Alves, Nensi Lakrori, Juhyeon Bae, Reza Akhavian, and Takis Mitropoulos, as well as CLC Chair Aaron Magdaleno for attending and supporting the student teams.

City Releases Prevailing Wage Report

By Mike McManus, Director of Engineering Construction & Industry Relations

The City of San Diego Compliance Department’s Office of Labor Standards Enforcement recently presented a report to a city council committee on its efforts to enforce and monitor prevailing wage compliance on city public works projects. The report was just an informational item in front of the Budget and Government Efficiency Committee of the City Council. The committee accepted the report with little comment. The results of the report, though, are important for contractors.

The report looked back on the fiscal year ending July 2024. In part, it examined 105 construction contracts. The total value of those contracts was over $821 million. As an awarding body, the city is responsible for monitoring and enforcing prevailing wage requirements on its public works projects. Under the law, the city is required to report any suspected prevailing wage violations to the Labor Commissioner or the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR).

Scouting America Lunch-O-Ree to Honor Mark Filanc in May

For the 18th year, the San Diego Imperial Council via Scouting America will host and honor one of construction’s own for the Annual Construction and Building Industry Lunch-O-Ree.

This year’s Scouting America honoree is none other than construction workforce tycoon Mark Filanc, CEO of FILANC.

Not only has Mark been an influential member of AGC San Diego as a former AGC president (2011), EGCA honoree, and instrumental force in his namesake, the J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program, but he (and his family) represent three generations of Eagle Scouts: Jack Filanc (founder of FILANC, 1995 AGC President), Mark Filanc Sr. (2011 AGC President), Peter Filanc (brother to Mark Sr., 2002 AGC President), Jim Filanc (brother to Mark Sr.), and Mark Filanc Jr.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 8, at the Paradise Point Resort & Spa. Register here to support the girls and boys involved in scouting with updated facilities.

PROGRAM

As usual, this event features a reception at 11:30 AM followed by the program at 12:00 PM. The keynote speaker is Vice Admiral John Mustin (retired), Chief of Navy Reserve, N095 in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. While Mustin was born in San Diego County, he resided in Alexandria, Virginia.

Hailing from a naval family recognized by the naming of a guided missile destroyer (USS MUSTIN [DDG 89]), he reached the pinnacle of his military service as Chief of the Navy Reserve and Commander, of the Navy Reserve Force at the Pentagon.

Impressive in his own right, Mustin commanded 60,000 personnel across the globe and managed a $3.7B annual budget in his role. Selected for command six times, and a decorated veteran of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, in 2019, he became the first reserve officer to command a U.S. Navy Strike Group when he assumed command of Expeditionary Strike Group TWO in Norfolk, Virginia.

Even more compelling is the amazing story his life and his family tell. His great-grandfather, Captain Henry C. Mustin, a naval aviator, established the first naval air station and launched the first aircraft from a ship underway. Two U.S. Navy destroyers bear the name Mustin in honor of his great-grandfather and his descendants. This is also the only family with three three-star admirals in its lineage!
