EAS Required Monthly Test:
If you are an engineer with a daytime only AM station, here is a clarification of the rules concerning Required Monthly Test (RMT).
FCC 11.61 indicates that the RMT in odd numbered months shall occur between 8:30 a.m. and local sunset. Tests in even numbered months shall occur between local sunset and 8:30 a.m.
If the AM daytime only station has a FM translator, it is permissible to air a nighttime RMT on the translator. No need to repeat on the AM the next day.
If the AM station does not have a FM translator, simply make a note in the station log that the RMT was received correctly but not rebroadcast. No need to transmit the next day.
Transmitter site Spring Cleaning:
In case you haven't noticed it is beginning to feel like spring. Now is a good time to clean up around the outside of your transmitter site, before the vegetation gets started.
Make sure to cut down or remove all bushes and trees around the building, tower and especially the guy paths and anchors.
Once everything is cut back or removed apply a generous amount of weed killer to help retard any additional growth. Getting control over vegetation will not only help the site to perform better but will keep transmitter guard critters from hiding in the bushes.
While working on the cleanup, inspect the area for things that may have happened during the winter months, like broken transmission line hangers, roof damage and road access.
As an added note, during the growing season you might consider a lawn service to keep the site well cut. Most would be happy to work a trade out for advertising.
Air Flow:
We mentioned above about the clean up outside the transmitter site. Now would also be an excellent time to inspect and replace any air filters at your site. Transmitters and related equipment work better and last longer with a good flow of clean air. Stock up on filters so you can change them regularly during the hot and dusty summer months.
If your site has air condition systems, consider having a reputable air condition company perform a maintenance check on all your units.
