NATIONAL PICKLE DAY | NOVEMBER 14
National Pickle Day recognizes the tart, sometimes sweet, and even spicy pickle. Each year on November 14th, pickle lovers pop open pecks of their preferred preserved pickle. It may be a Dill, Gherkin, Cornichon, Brined, Kosher Dill, Polish, Hungarian, Lime, Bread and Butter, Swedish and Danish, or Kool-Aid Pickle. No matter your choice, eat them all day long.
The term pickle comes from the Dutch word pekel, meaning brine. In the United States, the word pickle typically refers to a pickled cucumber. However, just about any fruit or vegetable can be pickled.
The process typically starts with a blanching process, depending on the fruit or vegetable. Then the product is packed into jars with seasonings that will give the pickles their flavor. They can be spicy, tart, or sweet. However, the tartness and sweetness come from the brine. A basic brine includes vinegar and water. Various amounts of sugar adjust the level of sweetness in the brine.
Pickle Facts
We consume a phenomenal 5,200,000 pounds of pickles each year in the United States. While pickles can be high in sodium, they are a good source of vitamin K. In moderation, they make a great snack.
- Food vendors sometimes serve pickles on a stick at fairs or carnivals. They are known as stick pickles.
- A rising trend in the United States is deep-fried pickles. The pickle is wrapped in dough or dipped in breading and deep-fried.
- The popularity of the pickle dates back thousands of years to 2030 B.C. At that time, traders imported cucumbers from India to the Tigris Valley. Here the people first preserved and ate the cucumbers as pickles.
- Cleopatra attributed her good looks to her diet of pickles.
- Even Julius Caesar craved the benefits of pickles. He believed pickles lent physical and spiritual strength and gave them to his troops.
Snack on a pickle to celebrate, but don’t stop there. This snack is multipurpose. They make delicious additions to salads and sandwiches. Grind them up and make a relish. Experimenting with pizza? Top it with some pickles. If your Sloppy Joe is missing a little zing, add some pickles. While not everything is better with pickles (ice cream?), a little experimentation goes a long way with pickles.

Hotel planned for long-vacant building near Frenchmen Street
By: Lance Traweek, Managing Editor
2121 Chartres St. Image courtesy WAAR Design
On the heels of opening an apartment-style hotel behind the Saenger Theatre, a local architect couple is eyeing their next adaptive reuse development – converting a former bottling factory into a hotel a half-block from Frenchmen Street’s nightclubs and restaurants.
The hotel would be at 2121 Chartres St. in a 45,000-square-foot vacant building at the intersection of Elysian Fields Avenue. It would have 41 guest suites that include a total of 109 bedrooms, with a space on the first floor that would likely be used as a restaurant or bar, according to a City Planning Commission report.
The entire structure, built in 1930 and vacant for more than a decade, would need to undergo renovation, according to the report.
Any non-residential use of more than 10,000 square feet of gross floor area requires conditional use approval. The City Planning Commission has recommended approval. The item is headed to the City Council Nov. 17.
Walter Antin III, architect with New Orleans-based WAAR Design, is a registered agent with 201 North Rampart LLC, which is spearheading the development. He said the company is in talks with potential operators for the hotel, including Sonder, which operates The Schaefer Hotel that he opened with his wife, architect Ariana Rinderknecht.
Located at 201 North Rampart St. behind the Saenger, The Schaefer is licensed as a hotel and marketed by Sonder as furnished apartment rentals, according to its website.
It was repurposed from a former furniture showroom and includes original wood. Dovetail joints – a technique used in carpentry – are incorporated into the century-old building. It has a bar named Dovetail on the ground floor.
“These are nice buildings that just need a little bit of attention,” Antin said. “The rehabilitated old buildings reinforces the historical character.”
Antin said the Marigny hotel would be located in a “great spot,” and they hope to incorporate recycled glass into the hotel’s design.
“Frankly, I’m kind of surprised that it has remained undeveloped for so long because it is a nice, historic building,” he said. Antin declined to disclosed the potential cost of renovations, and said the only major concern for the neighborhood was parking.
“If you have this hotel, it could strain residential parking,” he said. “I think there’s some truth to that.”
The hotel plans to partner with Premium Parking, which has two lots directly across the street with 250 parking spaces.
In a letter to the CPC, the Faubourg Marigny Improvement Association wrote that it would welcome “life brought back to this property” but added that the parking plans need a longer-term solution than what has been proposed.
Woodward Design+Build has been hired for preconstruction. Antin said his intention is to begin construction in January, but high interest rates, inflation and construction costs for materials might delay things. He expects the buildout to take about 18 months.
“I really wanted to get the building back into commerce in 2024, and that’s still the goal,” he said. “But there are some factors that exist now that didn’t exist when we originally made the timeline.”
There has been more hotel activity in the Frenchmen Street corridor recently. A building at the corner of Frenchmen and Decatur streets that New Orleans businessman Mike Motwani wants to redevelop into a hotel received approval from the CPC in April but has received pushback due to its proposed penthouse floor.
In February, the Frenchmen Hotel at 417 Frenchmen St. reopened after a six-month renovation by its new owner, Robert Thompson, who purchased The Whitney Hotel in downtown New Orleans from local hotelier Joe Jaeger and is turning the former K-Paul’s Louisiana Kitchen in the French Quarter into a space with all-day breakfast, lunch and a bakery.

Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean / La Nueva Orleans y el Caribe españoles
A bilingual exhibition / Una exposición bilingüe
November 9, 2022–January 22, 2023 /
Tuesday/martes–Saturday/sábado, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m; Sunday/domingo, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
520 Royal Street, Tricentennial Wing, 1st Floor
Free ticketed admission / Acceso gratuito con entrada
About the Exhibition / Sobre la exposición
New Orleans has long been identified—by locals, tourists, and historians alike—with its French heritage. A groundbreaking exhibition at The Historic New Orleans Collection restores balance to that assessment. During four decades under Spanish rule (1762–1803), the city experienced natural disaster, diplomatic tensions, and demographic transformation. Despite numerous challenges, Spanish New Orleans morphed from a poorly managed outpost on the edge of an empire to a highly urbanized colonial capital—one enriched by the racial and cultural diversity for which it is celebrated today.
Rare Artifacts come to New Orleans for Exhibition on Spanish Colonial Era
Free bilingual display on view Oct. 20, 2022–Jan. 22, 2023
Features more than 120 objects — including maps, documents, furniture, paintings, books and more — from THNOC’s permanent holdings as well as from several institutions in Spain, Mexico and the United States. The display is the first and only time this selection of objects will be presented together in one space.
In a first for THNOC, “Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean / La Nueva Orleans y el Caribe españoles” will be presented in both English and Spanish.
“Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean” will be on view on the first level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal St. in the French Quarter from Oct. 29, 2022, through Jan. 22, 2023. Admission is free. Advance reservations are recommended and may be made at my.hnoc.org beginning Thursday, Oct.13, 2022. For more information, visit www.hnoc.org.

NATIONAL SPICY GUACAMOLE DAY
National Spicy Guacamole Day brings together some fresh flavors on November 14th. Call your friends, get the chips ready, and celebrate with a bowl of spicy guacamole dip.
Originating with the Aztecs in Mexico, guacamole is an avocado-based sauce. It’s become popular in American cuisine as a dip, condiment, and salad ingredient.
Guacamole is made by using a mortar and pestle to mash ripe avocados and then mixing in sea salt. Sometimes tomatoes, onion, garlic, lemon juice, chili, yogurt, or other seasonings are added. Jalapenos, chilis, cumin or red pepper can be added to the recipe to make the guacamole spicy.
Super Bowl Sunday and Cinco de Mayo celebrations feature guacamole as a staple snack. As a result, avocado sales have soared to 30 million pounds on those two days each year.
A simple avocado carries a healthy punch of unsaturated fat (the good one). Additionally, a single avocado includes substantial amounts of Vitamins C and E. Good things come in small packages, though. There are nearly 400 calories in 1 cup of guacamole.
Does an avocado ever give you trouble when you have a hankering for guac? Well, there are some tricks to getting it just right. Make sure your avocado is ripe and add a few drops of lemon to keep the avocado from browning. It also adds a bright flavor. While picking ripe avocados can be daunting, it doesn’t have to be. A ripe avocado typically has mid-green to darker skin. It will give a little when lightly squeezed. However, a bruised avocado will be dimpled.

Demack Motor Car Company
One more old photograph of an automobile company – the Demack Motor Car Company. Founded in 1910 by George W. Demack, William S. Rogers, and H.J. Gomila, the business was originally located at 923 – 929 Lafayette Street to sell Knox Motor Cars. They moved to 704 – 714 Baronne Street in 1915 where they replaced Knox with Overland in their showroom. In 1922 they added the Chandler line to the mix.
The Knox Automobile Company was in business from 1900 until 1915. Overland Automobiles were in business from 1903 until 1926 while the Chandler Motor Car Company operated from 1913 until 1929.
In 1918 the company announced that they would move to a new building on St. Charles Avenue at Lee Circle opposite the Howard Library on the site of the old Burke residence, with the building running back to Camp Street. The granite building was constructed at a cost of $90,000 (about $1.8 million today) and had the address of 734 St. Charles Avenue at the time in their advertisements, although that address does not correspond to the current location.

Grunewald Hotel
The Grunewald Hotel was the headquarters for the New York Yankees during their spring training visits to New Orleans from 1922 through 1924. Babe Ruth is rumored to have lowered a bucket on the bathroom clothesline to a bellhop waiting below who would buy him a makeshift six-pack that he would haul back up to his room.
The Grunewald Hotel, the marvelous building depicted here in this 1910 illustration, was erected following the 1893 fire that destroyed the Grunewald Music Hall building in 1862. In 1923 the Grunewald family sold the building to the Vacarro family who renamed the building the Roosevelt Hotel. Over the years the hotel was expanded and improved under a series of different owners. The Blue Room nightclub and Sazarac Bar are landmarks in New Orleans.

Lunch & Dinner Menus - Hotel Grunewald
In 1900, New Orleanians and visitors to the Hotel Grunewald could feast on a main course of either broiled bluefish, roast domestic goose in apple sauce, or roast beef au jus, with their choice of an appetizer, a selection of desserts, and a pint of French wine from the blue luncheon menu for the price of one dollar (about $32 today).
The beige dinner menu was also available for one dollar and featured your entrée choice of filet of trout, roast turkey in cranberry sauce, or roast beef au jus, again with an appetizer and dessert and a pint of French wine. This was before restaurants began charging higher process at dinner for the same dishes they served at lunch.
Both menus are from the collection of the New York Public Library.

Stained Glass Wine House Celebrates First-Year Anniversary
201 Huey P. Long Ave, Suite A, Gretna, LA 70053
15:00 November 08, 2022
By: Gracie Wise
Over the many decades since America's founding, the bravest men and women have made a ton of sacrifices. Whether it meant sailing the stormy Atlantic or storming the perilous jungles in Vietnam, they all had a goal--to preserve life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
As Veteran's Day approaches, Stained Glass Wine House will be celebrating its first birthday by hosting three exciting events in partnership with Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs:
·
· Dinner and Drinks with Deuccce!!: Meet Saints player Deuce McAlister on Wednesday, November 16, at Stained Glass Wine House from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Get your tickets here for $100 to enjoy dinner and drinks.
· Paws for Veterans: Bring your pooch for a fun day of Mutt Strutt, photos, games, and vendors on Saturday, November 19. Guests will also enjoy specialty drinks and live music from personality Indy Blu at 1 p.m. You can register here. Participation packages are also available!
All proceeds will help raise money for a Louisiana veteran with PTSD to adopt a service dog. They are raising $25,000, which will help cover the costs for training and owning the pet. Your support will make a world of difference.
About Stained Glass Wine House
Stained Glass Wine House is owned and operated by four Air Force veterans in 2021. Hailed as one of the best bars in Gretna by Where Y'at, they give customers a unique self-serve experience in a relaxed, community-centric environment. Charcuterie and dessert boards are also available. They plan on expanding operations to Jefferson Parish.

Jazz'n the Vines 11/19:
81250 Hwy 1082, Bush, LA 70431
3:30: DUSKY WATERS
6:30: BUCKWHEAT ZYDECO JR.
Hi Wine Club Family! We are blowing it out for our Fall Jazz'n the Vines Finale, starting with Dusky Waters on our new side stage from 3:30-6pm, and rolling into the evening with our headliner- the amazing Buckwheat Zydeco Jr. and Ils Sont Partis Band from 6:30-9pm!
Whether you prefer to catch the sun or the stars, we have great entertainment for you on November 19th!
Carrying on his Father’s legacy and band, Buckwheat Zydeco Jr. now leads the bands in his legendary father’s footsteps. Growing up at his Father’s side while he played festivals with a host of rock and pop musicians, including Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, U2, Willie Nelson, Robert Plant and Keith Richards, Buckwheat Zydeco, Jr. carried the Louisiana standard of Zydeco music throughout the country.
The Legendary Ils Sont Partis Band derived from the Late Great Stanley Dural. also known as Buckwheat Zydeco. This Grammy and Emmy Award Winning band has performed over 2,500 shows and a host of television appearances. (David Letterman,CBS Morning News, Good Morning America to name a few). The Creole cousin of jazz, Zydeco music will have you up dancing in the isles, in your kitchen, in your living room, no matter your age or abilities; it’s family-festive music. We are honored to have these amazing musicians take the stage at Wild Bush and are so excited to see your 2 steppin moves!
Make a day of it and come out early to see one of our favorite local bands, Dusky Waters, from 3:30-6pm! If you haven’t caught this charming quartet before, well trust us, you will love them! Frontwoman Jennifer Jeffers enchants listeners with intricate layers of melodies and stories told through soulful lyricism. And there will be banjo playing yall. I mean, come on!
As if this wasn’t all enough, we are also partnering up with the Northshore Food Bank to do good while feeling good!
This event will include your chance to donate a much needed item to the Northshore Food Bank as we partner up to help collect items of need this holiday season! For every donation, you will be entered into a raffle for the chance to win free admission for 2 adults to our ENTIRE 2023 Jazz'n the Vines line up!
If you are unable to make the show but would like to donate and be entered into our raffle, please see the details below on how to contribute...

GOOD SHEPHERD SCHOOL ANNOUNCES STAR-STUDDED “NIGHT AT THE OSCARS” GALA TO SUPPORT SCHOOL’S PHILANTHROPIC MISSION
“Night at the Oscars“ Gala to Take Place Thursday, December 1 at The Cannery in Mid-City
(New Orleans) –Good Shepherd School (GSS) announced today their annual gala with a theme of “Night at the Oscars” on Thursday, December 1, 2022, at The Cannery in Mid-City with the event’s patron party beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the main event starting at 7:30 p.m.
This year’s celebratory soiree will feature entertainment from renowned international party band “After Party.” Food and exotic drinks for the event will be prepared by Toulouse Gourmet Catering.
The “Night at the Oscars” gala is a new and picturesque twist on GSS’s annual “Dancing with the Stars” gala and will have special honorees and awards handed out over the course of the night. Some GSS graduates will be spotlighted in video vignettes during the gala.
“This year’s ‘Night at the Oscars’ gala will be a spectacular event and bring a little bit of Hollywood to New Orleans,” said GSS President and CEO Thomas Moran. “It’s the perfect event to celebrate our supporters and the hard work our team at GSS provides helping families break the cycle of generational poverty through quality, faith-based education – all funded by the generosity of others.”
The event will continue the legacy of the school’s founder, Father Harry Tompson. Since opening its doors in 2001, the Gentilly-based Good Shepherd Pre-K and Elementary School has carried out Fr. Tompson’s lifelong mission of helping and educating children in need. The Catholic school opened its doors just four months after Fr. Tompson’s death with the mission of educating children no matter their family’s financial situation. So far, GSS has graduated 219 students and currently serves 264 students.

Children’s Hospital New Orleans and Downtown Development District Unveil Details for Inaugural New Orleans Holiday Parade
The Children’s Hospital Holiday Parade will roll Saturday, Dec. 3 in partnership with the Downtown Development District, NewOrleans.com and Kern Studios
NEW ORLEANS – At a news conference held at Mardi Gras World Thursday, Nov.10, details were unveiled for the first-of-its-kind Children’s Hospital New Orleans Holiday Parade which will take place in downtown New Orleans Saturday, Dec. 3 starting at 3 p.m.
Kicking off the holiday season, the more than 20 float parade will include custom-designed holiday themed floats that include animatronic props, intelligent lighting systems, special effects and audio systems, along with traditional rider floats, bringing the joy and magic of the holiday season to thousands of parade-goers.
“Children’s Hospital is excited to help bring a world-class, kid and family-centered holiday parade to the City of New Orleans this December,” said John R. Nickens IV, President and CEO of Children’s Hospital New Orleans. “We invite the community to join us for an afternoon of joy and fun as we kickoff the holiday season together.”
The parade will also feature high-flying helium balloons displayed for the first-time in New Orleans, along with the beloved marching groups and bands that the citizens of New Orleans have come to love – and of course, Santa himself with his cast of holiday characters.
“New Orleans during the holidays is one of the most wonderful times of the year for our community,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “The Children’s Hospital New Orleans Holiday Parade is an exciting addition to all that our city has to offer for its citizens and visitors alike during this magical time of year. Come downtown and roll with us on Saturday, December 3 as we experience the joy of the holidays.”
The Children’s Hospital New Orleans Holiday Parade is made possible in partnership with the Downtown Development District, NewOrleans.com, the French Market Corporation, WDSU and many other supporters. Float sponsors include B1 Bank, Chick-fil-A New Orleans, the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, The National WWII Museum, Louisiana Feed Your Soul and Audacy.
"The Downtown Development District is pleased to continue its support of the City's Holiday Parade,” said Downtown Development District President and CEO Davon Barbour. “In partnering with Kern Studios, this year's parade will be bigger and better than ever with national exposure. We take our responsibility as advocates for the Downtown community very seriously and believe that this reimagining of the parade will serve as a significant economic boost to Downtown businesses."
The Children’s Hospital New Orleans Holiday Parade will begin at the corner of Esplanade Avenue and North Peters Street, traveling North Peters to Decatur Street through the vibrant French Market toward Jackson Square and Oscar Dunn Park, where it will bring the joy and magic of the holiday season to life. The parade will then make its way back to North Peters, turning right on Canal Street, left on Baronne Street, traveling through downtown to Julia Street and ending along St. Charles Avenue in front of Lafayette Square, where the holiday festivities will continue from 5-7 p.m. with music from Rebirth Brass Band, food and more.
