MICKEY MOUSE BIRTHDAY
On November 18th, Mickey Mouse Birthday commemorates the debut of a lovable mouse that was once a rabbit called Oswald. His character got his start on film on November 18, 1928, but before that, the story begins in 1927, when Walt Disney first sketched a floppy-eared bunny while under contract to Universal Studios. The events that unraveled brought us Mickey Mouse.
MICKEY MOUSE BIRTHDAY HISTORY
While his creator and studio have applied several different birth dates to the lovable mouse over the years, November 18, 1928, was finalized as Mickey's birth date with stardom. Before that, Mickey Mouse came under the roller coaster events of Oswald's success and Universal's disappointing contract negotiations. Disney Bros. Studio took their leave of both the studio and Oswald and set to work, creating a character who would go on to lead the company into the future.
From a rabbit named Oswald to a mouse named Mortimer, eventually, the squeaky-voiced rodent was dubbed Mickey. He flopped in two animated short films without any success. Then on November 18, 1928, Mickey's star was born. The first animation synchronized to music and sound effects, Steamboat Willie premiered in New York.
Mickey Mouse Club
Within a year, a Mickey Mouse Club popped up in Salem, Oregon. This particular club offered admission as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army. Patrons donated either a potato or a small toy and a penny as admission. According to a December 22, 1929, Statesman Journal (Salem, Oregon) article, $12 and three truckloads of potatoes and toys were collected by eager new members.
Remember, the stock market crashed just 20 days before Mickey Mouse was born. That a cute little mouse could bring smiles to the faces of children at an uncertain time isn't such a surprise.
Generally, new members joined the club by completing an admission form obtained from a local merchant and attending meetings held during matinees at local movie houses. The price of admission often was reduced for good deeds and report cards. By the end of 1930, the Mickey Mouse Clubs had spread across the country.
New Look & Companions
In 1935, animator Fred Moore gave Mickey a new look that enabled a more fluid movement to the animation.
A makeover in 1935 by animator Fred Moore gave Mickey the look we are familiar with today. The big eyes, white gloves, and the pert little nose. More lovable than ever before, he propelled himself even further into the hearts of children everywhere.
His companions Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto joined him along the way, bringing vaudevillian comedy with them.
Mickey FAQ
Q. When did Minnie Mouse make her debut?
A. Incidentally, Minnie Mouse shares the same birthday as Mickey since she debuted in the same cartoon - Steamboat Willie.
Q. What's Mickey's full name?
A. Mickey's full name is Michael Theodore "Mickey" Mouse.
Q. What did Walt Disney do during World War I?
A. His first job was as an ambulance driver in France. Then his abilities as an artist came to the attention of the military; Disney was making side money drawing decorations on the uniforms of service personnel. He was soon assigned the duty of camouflaging sniper helmets, trucks, and other such military equipment.

The Old Farmers Almanac
The Leonid Meteor Shower is headed our way! Look for roughly 10 meteors per minute to grace our night skies on November 17-18. Best time to spot 'em is predawn on the 18th, and you're going to get the best views looking towards the south.
The bright moonlight might make it hard to see the meteors this year, but follow these tips from astronomer Bob Berman, and you'll know everything you need to know to get the best glimpse.

Earlier this week, the Recording Academy announced nominees for the 2025 GRAMMY Awards, and over 20 Louisiana artists were among the list of notable musicians.
- Jon Batiste, a New Orleans Center for Creative Arts-trained multi-instrumentalist with five Grammys to his credit, continues to make waves. This year, he's nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media with "It Never Went Away" from the documentary American Symphony, which also earned a nod for Best Music Film. The documentary chronicles Batiste's journey alongside his wife Suleika Jaouad during her battle with leukemia.
- Country singer-songwriter Lainey Wilson, hailing from Baskin, Louisiana, is a contender for Best Country Album with her latest release, Whirlwind.
- New Orleans artists shine in the Best Regional Roots Music Album category, with nominees including Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and his grandson J'wan Boudreaux for their live performance captured at this year's New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The New Breed Brass Band also earned a nomination for their Jazz Fest recording, featuring a special appearance by Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews.
- Funk band The Rumble, which includes Monk Boudreaux's son Second Chief Joseph Boudreaux, received recognition last year for their debut live album, Live at the Maple Leaf. This year, they return with a nomination for their studio release, Stories from the Battlefield.
- Zydeco legend Sean Ardoin, from Lake Charles, represents Louisiana with a nod for his album 25 Back to My Roots.
- Tank and the Bangas, familiar faces at the Grammys since their 2020 Best New Artist nomination, are competing this year in the Best Spoken Word Poetry Album category for their introspective release, The Heart, The Mind, The Soul.
- Afro-Cuban funk sensation Cimafunk, now a New Orleans resident, celebrates his third Grammy nomination for Pa' Tu Cuerpa, which is up for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.
- French-born jazz vocalist Cyrille Aimée, who has made New Orleans her home, is recognized for her latest release à Fleur de Peau, earning a nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, her second Grammy nod.
- Master drummer Herlin Riley contributed to trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire’s Owl Song, which is nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. Meanwhile, New Orleans pianist Sullivan Fortner is nominated in three jazz categories: Best Jazz Instrumental Album (Solo Game), Best Jazz Vocal Album (with Kurt Elling for Wildflowers Vol. 1), and Best Jazz Performance (with Samara Joy for "Twinkle Twinkle Little Me").
- The iconic cornetist King Oliver's 1923 recordings with his Creole Jazz Band, featuring Louis Armstrong, are honored on their centennial. The restored collection, Centennial, is nominated for Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album.
- Lucky Daye, an Atlanta-based artist from New Orleans, continues his Grammy streak with nominations for Best R&B Album (Candydrip), Best Traditional R&B Performance, and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. He previously won for his 2021 EP Table for Two.
- Producer Malik Ninety Five, a New Orleans native now on the West Coast, shares a Best R&B Album nomination for his work on Chris Brown's 11:11. He also contributed to Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal, which is up for Best Rap Album.
- Opera singer Greer Grimsley, born in New Orleans and a graduate of Loyola University and Juilliard, is recognized in the Best Opera Recording category for the Metropolitan Opera's performance of Florencia en el Amazonas.
- Loyola University alumni also share in Grammy glory: producer and guitarist Carter Lang co-wrote SZA’s Saturn, nominated for Best R&B Song, while vocalist Johnaye Kendrick is up for two arrangement categories for her work with Säje.
- Other Louisiana-born nominees include pianist John Beasley, recognized for Best Latin Jazz Album and Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, and gospel singer DOE, honored in Best Gospel Performance/Song and Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. Both hail from Shreveport.
PS – Congratulations to Beyonce, who traces her roots to Louisiana, with a total of 32 wins and 99 nominations from the Grammy Awards for her music (including her work in Destiny's Child and The Carters), making her now the most-awarded and most nominated artist in Grammy history! 👑🐝

Lincoln Beach Redevelopment and Reopening Public Comments and Questions
NEW ORLEANS – The revitalization and reopening of the Historic Lincoln Beach located at 13904 Hayne Blvd., a treasured landmark in New Orleans history, is moving forward with a strong commitment to inclusivity and engagement. The City of New Orleans values the input of all members of the community in shaping the future of the reopening of the Beach.
The beach is currently closed, with the intent to reopen soon. However, your diverse community voices are not just important, they are key in shaping the future of Lincoln Beach as a space where everyone is welcome and entertained. As progress is being made in developing the master plan to restore and celebrate the history of this significant space, the project team remains deeply committed to your continued involvement in the planning process.
To ensure that Spanish-speaking residents have access to information and a platform to share their ideas and feedback, community public meetings, surveys, engagement opportunities, and printed materials related to the Lincoln Beach Master Plan are offered in Spanish. During community meetings, bilingual interpreters and facilitators are available to ensure every voice is heard and every story is valued.
The Lincoln Beach Master Plan project team has launched a survey following its Nov. 7 Public Milestone meeting. The survey aims to help build consensus on refining and prioritizing previously identified options for structures and amenities incorporating recreation, culture, history, and environmental guardianship on the beach site. The City of New Orleans wants to hear from the local Spanish-speaking population about their thoughts and desires for the beach. This input is welcome and crucial to this process.
For comments or questions about Lincoln Beach, community members can call 504-224-9531 (leave a message) or email lincolnbeach@nola.gov. NEW ORLEANS (BRPROUD) — The New Orleans Saints continue to fill up the hole they dug themselves in with a 35-14 win over the Cleveland Browns Sunday at the Caesars Superdome.
Saints found the endzone on their first possession of the game thanks to Taysom Hill after stopping Cleveland on fourth down at midfield. It’s the first time the Saints scored a touchdown on their opening possession since Week 4.
Explosive plays have been the Achilles’ heel of the New Orleans defense this season. Sunday, the problem continued later in the first quarter when former Saints quarterback Jameis Winston connected with Jerry Jeudy, who turned it into an 89-yard touchdown. Despite the score, the Saints continued to lead 7-6 due to the Browns failing to convert the 2-point attempt.
The Saints opened the second quarter with an explosive play of their own, with quarterback Derek Carr finding receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a 71-yard touchdown, extending their lead to 14-6. The touchdown is Valdes-Scantling’s third in two games.
The Browns tied the game at 14 on their first possession of the second half with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Winston to receiver Elijah Moore while adding on a two-point conversion.
Hill continued to have a dominant day for the Saints, rushing for his second touchdown to open the fourth quarter on fourth down to put New Orleans up 21-14.
The Saints extended their lead to 28-14 in the fourth with a touchdown from Carr to tight end Juwan Johnson after starting in excellent field position thanks to a 53-yard punt return by Dante Pettis, who was elevated from the practice squad for the game.
Hill scored a third touchdown near the end of the fourth quarter, bringing the score to 35-14.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,November 18
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL VICHYSSOISE DAY
November 18th recognizes a cold soup that is loved by many. It is National Vichyssoise Day.
Made thick with pureed leeks, onions, potatoes, cream and chicken stock, Vichyssoise is traditionally served cold though sometimes is eaten hot.
In the United States, Vichyssoise is pronounced: vish – e – swaz.
Culinary historians debate the origin of Vichyssoise. However, the man most credited with the reinvention of the soup is French chef Louis Diat. Back in 1950, New Yorker Magazine interviewed Diat, who was the chef at the Ritz Carlton in New York City; he told them:
"In the summer of 1917, when I had been at the Ritz seven years, I reflected upon the potato and leek soup of my childhood which my mother and grandmother used to make. I recalled how during the summer my older brother and I used to cool it off by pouring in cold milk and how delicious it was. I resolved to make something of the sort for the patrons of the Ritz."
Recipes have been found for soup very similar to Vichyssoise but served hot dating back as far as 1869.

10 Common Words You’re Probably Using Wrong (And How to Fix It)
Many of us use language every day without giving much thought to whether we’re using words correctly. However, some commonly used words are often misused or misunderstood, leading to confusion or miscommunication. In this blog post, we'll explore ten of these words, clarify their meanings, and provide tips on how to use them correctly.
Literally vs. Figuratively
One of the most common misuses of language is the word "literally." People often use it to emphasize a statement, but this is incorrect. "Literally" means in a literal sense; it refers to something that is actually true, not exaggerated. For instance, saying "I literally died laughing" is incorrect unless you were actually incapacitated. Instead, use "figuratively" to describe something that is not meant to be taken at face value.
Irregardless vs. Regardless
"Iregardless" is a word that many people mistakenly use instead of "regardless." The term "irregardless" is considered nonstandard and is often viewed as incorrect. The correct word is "regardless," which means without regard or despite the circumstances. If you want to sound more polished in your speech and writing, stick with "regardless" to convey your message clearly.
Affect vs. Effect
The distinction between "affect" and "effect" can be confusing. "Affect" is a verb that means to influence something, while "effect" is a noun that refers to the result of a change. For example, you might say, "The weather can affect your mood," whereas the effect of the weather on your mood would be, "The effect of the weather on my mood is significant." Remembering this difference can help you communicate more effectively.
Less vs. Fewer
The words "less" and "fewer" are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings. "Less" is used for uncountable quantities, while "fewer" is used for countable ones. For example, you would say, "I have less water" (because water is uncountable) but "I have fewer apples" (because apples can be counted). To improve your writing, pay attention to whether the noun you’re describing is countable or uncountable.
Disinterested vs. Uninterested
Many people use "disinterested" to mean "uninterested," but these words have different connotations. "Disinterested" means impartial or unbiased, while "uninterested" means lacking interest or concern. If you want to convey that someone is neutral in a situation, use "disinterested." If you mean that someone simply does not care, then "uninterested" is the right choice.
Ensure vs. Insure
"Ensure" and "insure" are often confused, but they serve different purposes. "Ensure" means to make certain that something will happen, while "insure" is specifically related to providing insurance against loss or damage. For example, you would say, "I ensure that my car is safe," but "I insure my car against theft." Using these terms correctly can enhance the clarity of your writing.
Complement vs. Compliment
The words "complement" and "compliment" sound similar but have different meanings. "Complement" refers to something that completes or goes well with something else, while "compliment" is a positive remark or expression of praise. For instance, you might say, "The wine complements the meal," or "She gave me a compliment on my dress." Keeping these definitions in mind will help you choose the right word in conversation and writing.
Principal vs. Principle
"Principal" and "principle" are another pair of commonly confused words. "Principal" can refer to the head of a school or organization, or it can mean primary or most important. "Principle," on the other hand, refers to a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior. Use "principal" when discussing leadership or importance, and "principle" when discussing ethics or rules.
Who vs. Whom
The distinction between "who" and "whom" is often overlooked in casual conversation. "Who" is used as a subject pronoun, while "whom" is used as an object pronoun. A simple way to determine which one to use is to rephrase the sentence. If you can replace the word with "he" or "she," use "who." If you can replace it with "him" or "her," use "whom." For example, "Who is coming to the party?" becomes "He is coming to the party," so "who" is correct. In contrast, "To whom should I address the letter?" becomes "I should address it to him," making "whom" the right choice.
Unique vs. Very Unique
The word "unique" means one of a kind or unlike anything else. Adding "very" to "unique" is redundant because something is either unique or it isn't. Saying "very unique" implies that there are varying degrees of uniqueness, which contradicts its definition. Using "unique" on its own conveys the intended meaning effectively.
In conclusion, understanding the nuances of these common words can significantly improve your communication skills. By being mindful of how you use these terms, you'll not only enhance your writing but also convey your thoughts more clearly. Next time you reach for one of these words, take a moment to consider its proper usage, and you’ll sound more polished and articulate in your conversations and writing.

Swirl Wine Bar & Market
3143 Ponce de Leon Street
FNWS
At that stroke of midnight on November 21, 2024, oenophiles all over France will begin their jubilant celebration in honor of the end of the harvest and the uncorking of the Beaujolais Nouveau. Hundreds of events throughout France will be held with fireworks, music, and, of course, tastings, as “tout le monde” vie to sample the current batch of Beaujolais Nouveau - light, fruit-driven wines made with barely fermented Gamay grapes that are best consumed as soon as possible - literally. But, never fear, there are 3 different quality levels of Beaujolais above Nouveau and these are the ones we get excited about!
The entry-level wines that are simply labeled Beaujolais, are made from grapes grown throughout the Beaujolais region, mainly in the south. These also tend to be on the fruit-forward side and are meant to be enjoyed in the first year or two after the vintage. Beaujolais-Villages wines are based on Gamay grapes that were grown in the northern part of the Beaujolais region, specifically 38 permitted villages. And Cru Beaujolais are grown in any of ten specific northern locales whose typically granitic soils (though they are far from uniform in composition and character) can produce the most age-worthy and complex of all red wines from Beaujolais. So, needless to say, the least expensive wines generally come from the south, and the more expensive and age-worthy wines come from the north. And if this was all you learned about Beaujolais, you’d know enough to dive in and start learning by tasting - but as always goes with wine, a lot of the fun is in the details.
We are here to help with those details as we taste different wines from the 3 categories and talk about the terroir that makes them special. What is Beaujolais Blanc? What is the difference between a village-level wine and a cru? What's the stylistic difference between one Cru and another?? David Sobiesk will present as we learn about one of our favorite regions and pick out some of the best wines ever to pair with your holiday meals! The event is sold out but you can join our waitlist here, Gamay
Learn a little, drink a little, and have some fun with us!

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
