GLOBAL CAT DAY | October 16
Global Cat Day on October 16th raises awareness surrounding non-lethal feline programs across the country. More than any other shelter animal, cats and kittens face euthanization at a much higher rate. However, programs such as trap, neuter, and release (TNR) are making it possible for cats to live full and healthy lives right in our neighborhoods.
TNR programs aim to reduce shelters and overall colony populations across the country. TNR programs trap feral and stray cats. They are then neutered and vaccinated under the care of a veterinarian. Their ears are tipped to identify that they have been neutered. Then the cat is released back into the neighborhood where they were captured.
Long-term studies across the country show that not only does the population decline, but the cats live out their lives healthily. Additionally, these programs save taxpayers money over time.
- Reduces animal service calls
- Lessens the burden on shelters
- Neighborhoods become quieter - mating behavior decreases
Why Adoption Doesn't Always Work
Feral cats - cats that have never had human contact - don't associate well with humans. They will always be feral and unable to be adopted. Feral cats prefer the wild. A TNR program offers them the best chance of living side by side with humans.
However, adoption is still a viable option for stray cats and kittens under 12 weeks of age. Visit your local shelter if you are seeking a pet of your own.

SEC Power Ratings
Both Mississippi schools were off this weekend while Georgia and Alabama played bottom-feeders in their division in the 11 a.m. window. It was the second weekend in a row the conference had an all-Tigers matchup but the game of the weekend was likely in Knoxville between the Aggies and Volunteers.
Forget preseason polls. Forget what happened last season. Disregard recruiting rankings and what these teams look like on paper. The only criteria considered in this season's BamaCentral SEC Power Rankings is what happens between the white lines during games.
Winning is rewarded and losing is punished in our 2023 Power Rankings, so lets get right to it as we react to seven weeks of football throughout the conference.
1. Georgia (-) (7-0, 4-0)
- The Bulldogs went to Nashville and cruised to victory to stay unbeaten on the season. Sure, the Commodores had the score tied 7-7 after the first quarter, and outscored the Dawgs 13-10 in the fourth quarter, but Kirby Smart's program was never really in danger, defeating the 'Dores 37-20.
2. Alabama (-) (6-1, 4-0)
-
The Crimson Tide was still asleep at 11 a.m. for its homecoming game with the Arkansas Razorbacks, but two touchdown passes gave the Tide a halftime lead. Alabama napped at halftime and the Razorbacks took advantage, but ultimately came up short of claiming their first SEC win.
- Related video: Will College Football Playoff Expansion Help or Hurt the Sport? (Stadium)
3. Ole Miss (-) (5-1, 2-1)
- The Lane Train was in the station this week on an off week.
4. LSU (-) (5-2, 4-1)
-
The LSU offense is likely the best in the conference and nothing changed on Saturday. Heisman Trophy candidate Jaylen Daniels amassed 418 yards from scrimmage, with three touchdowns to lead the Bayou Bengals past the Auburn Tigers 48-18.
5. Missouri (-) (6-1, 2-1)
- Eli Drinkwitz and his team responded to last weekend's loss to LSU by going on the road and serving Big Blue Nation its second loss in two weeks. Missouri appears like it may be one of the better team in the conference, but beware, the road ahead continues to get more challenging for the Tigers.
6. Tennessee (↑3) (5-1, 2-1)
- Tennessee's special teams shouldered the load in Knoxville this week as the Volunteers won an ugly 20-13 game over Jimbo Fisher and his squad. Dee Williams cashed in a 39-yard punt return to ultimately give Big Orange a victory.
7. Florida (↑1) (5-2, 3-1)
- The Gators claimed their first road win of the season on Saturday, going to Columbia and taking down the Gamecocks 41-39 after transfer portal quarterback Graham Mertz threw for 423 yards and three touchdowns.
8. Texas A&M (↓2) (4-3, 2-2)
- It's two conference losses in a row for Texas A&M after Tennessee held the Aggies to just 54 rushing yards. Two Max Johnson interceptions and 11 penalties spelled doom for Jimbo Fisher's squad.
9. Kentucky (↓2) (5-2, 2-2)
- Mark Stoops might want to ask for more NIL donations after his Wildcats squandered a 14-0 lead and dropped its second game in consecutive weeks, losing to Missouri 38-21.
10. Arkansas (↑2) (2-5, 0-4)
- The Razorbacks might be ranked a bit high when looking at record alone, but this weekend's 24-21 loss to the Crimson Tide marked it's fourth one-score loss of the year. Arkansas has lost to LSU and Alabama each by three points and Ole Miss by seven, all on the road.
11. Auburn (↓1) (3-3, 0-3)
- The fans are getting restless on The Plains as Auburn laid a stinker on Saturday in Death Valley. The Tigers appear to have one of the worst offenses in the league as they went just 3-12 on 3rd downs against LSU.
12. South Carolina (↓1) (2-4, 1-3)
- The Gamcocks defense couldn't stop a nose bleed at home on Saturday, and Shane Beamer's team dropped its third conference game.
13. Vanderbilt (↑1)(2-6, 0-4)
- The Commodores fought to the end but no one really expected Clark Lea's squad to compete with Georgia. Vanderbilt is still winless in conference play, but showed good fight.
14. Mississippi State (↓1) (3-3, 0-3)
- The Bulldogs enjoyed an off week

FAMILY-OWNED, 94-YEAR-OLD TEXTILE COMPANY ANNOUNCES $15 MILLION PLAN FOR NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY IN JEFFERSON PARISH
(WESTWEGO, La) – Loop Linen Service, a fourth-generation family-owned full-service textile rental company, announced it will invest $15 million to construct a new 55,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art commercial laundry facility.
Founded in 1929, Loop Linen provides rental textiles including table linen, garments and walk-off mats for the food and beverage and hospitality industries. The company started as a local dry cleaning and laundry business on the west bank of Jefferson Parish and now has nearly 1,400 customers across Louisiana and Mississippi, with offerings ranging from uniform rentals to hospital services.
“Loop Linen Service is a shining example of how small businesses can grow into big economic drivers in our state,” Gov. John Bel Edward said. “This family-owned enterprise has grown steadily for nearly a century, creating Jefferson Parish jobs while supporting workers in the hospitality and health care sectors throughout Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. I thank them for their continued commitment to our state and its skilled workforce.”
The company will retain all 125 current positions as it transitions from the Westwego facility that it has occupied since 1931. Louisiana Economic Development estimates the project will result in 48 new indirect jobs in the Southeast Region.
“Jefferson Parish has always been Loop Linen Service’s home and home to our employees,” Loop Linen Service President Scott M. Burke said. “We are excited to continue the company’s growth here and contribute to the business economy in Jefferson Parish.”
The company has secured property at the intersection of U.S. 90 and Louisiana 18, and is in the process of finalizing architectural plans for the facility. Construction is anticipated to begin by early 2025. The new facility is slated to be completed and operational 16 months after breaking ground.
“It is an honor to retain Loop Linen in Jefferson Parish,” said Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng. “JEDCO and Jefferson Parish have worked in tandem to create and maintain economic conditions that are attractive to our business community. Loop Linen’s continued investment in Jefferson Parish is a testament to our strong business climate, accessibility, talent and responsive government. We are proud to support their expansion in our community.”
“This is a tremendous win for District 2 and Jefferson Parish,” said District 2 Councilman Deano Bonano. “By identifying funds that could update infrastructure in the area where Loop Linen planned to build its new facility, we were able to keep this homegrown company in Jefferson Parish while also positioning area properties for future development. We look forward to a continued partnership with Loop Linen as they approach 100 years in operation.”
To support the project in Jefferson Parish, the state of Louisiana offered Loop Linen Service a competitive incentives package that includes a $500,000 grant from the Economic Development Award Program for infrastructure needs contingent upon meeting capital investment and job retention targets.
“We thank Loop Linen for their continued investment in Jefferson Parish,” JEDCO President and CEO Jerry Bologna said. “This project is emblematic of the cooperation and coordination between economic developers and our elected leadership. JEDCO worked extensively alongside council and parish officials to retain Loop Linen in Jefferson Parish. Our collective work to meet infrastructure needs allowed us to retain this business in Jefferson Parish while also bringing underutilized properties into commerce.”
“For more than 90 years, Loop Linen has grown its family operations from generation to generation, and this expansion ensures the best is yet to come,” said Michael Hecht, President and CEO of Greater New Orleans, Inc. “The innovative new facility makes it easier to deliver quality services for their customers and creates a productive environment for employees to thrive. This investment also strengthens Loop Linen’s historic legacy in Jefferson Parish, where the Burke family has been a leading force in the business community.”

Fun for the whole family is also available at the “Harvest Matchup,” where there will be inflatables, football and archery.

•Oct. 28: Symphony on The Lake
Grab those chairs and enjoy a sunset over Lake Pontchartrain with the soothing sounds of classical music from the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra.
Symphony on the Lake will take place at the Mandeville Lakefront between Coffee and Carroll streets from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 28. The LPO will perform works by Copland, Brahms, Britten, Saint-Saens, Duke, Gershwin, Offenbach, Williams, Sousa and others. Food trucks will be on site at this free event, but picnics will also be permitted.
•Nov. 3-5: Ozone Songwriters Festival
One of the north shore’s signature events for up-and-coming talent, the Ozone Songwriters Festival, the festival will host more than 130 local, regional and national music artists who will sing their hearts across four stages. The event features not only musical talent, but songwriting talent. A VIP Showcase will take place Nov. 3 at the Old Rail Brewing Company, with performances by event creator and Grammy-nominated recording artist Greg Barnhill, among others. Tickets for the showcase range from $65 to $130.
The following days will include performances and a songwriter contest where a winner will be selected for a one-song record deal. Specific details about this portion of the event and stage locations have not been finalized yet.
A songwriter workshop will also take place where budding artists can learn the ins and outs of studio recording, social media, engineering and more. The cost to attend the workshop is $40. More information on the workshop will be posted on the festival’s website at ozonemusic.org as details are announced.
“The festival gives new songwriters the chance to be in front of a live audience and have their songs heard, and to gain valuable stage experience, as well as get a reaction to their songs,” said Barnhill. “It’s also a great experience for the audience, for they might just be seeing the next Usher or Taylor Swift.”
•Nov. 10-12: Festival of the Lake
Our Lake of the Lake Roman Catholic Church will again host its annual fair at its campus on Lafitte Street in Mandeville. This year’s Festival of the Lake will include inflatables, a craft market, petting zoo, pony rides, sock hop, baseball mania, games, food, a “doggie dance” by the Northshore Humane Society and a host of live performances.
This year’s music lineup includes Bag of Donuts, Peyton Falgoust Band, Adam Pearce, and Christian Serpas & Ghost Town. Just be sure to bring chairs for the concert.
Activities at the festival will require tickets that can be purchased for 50 cents each. Early bird tickets will be available on the festival’s website at festivalofthelake.com.

More than 200 juried artists from across the nation, and world in some cases, will line both sides of Columbia Street featuring myriad artistic mediums.
“We have everything,” said event coordinator Sarada Bonnett. “Woodworking, watercolor, metalsmithing, glass and everything in between. 2D, 3D paintings. You name it, it’s there.”
Artists were vetted from nearly 500 applicants, she said, and the festival has been recognized by Sunshine Artist as one of the best in the country. Artist awards will be presented at a special event on Saturday night.
Live music will feature Crispin Schroeder, Those Olivier’s, The Teche Two, Dr. Ben Redwine, Lake Ragan, Ghost Town Duo, Jude LeBlanc and Jake Gunter.
A tented food court will be set up for patrons, and a children’s village will keep the kiddos occupied with a hands-on dinosaur experience, children’s museum activities and canvas painting. A separate student art contest is also part of the event and winners will be awarded that Sunday at 2 p.m. For more, visit covingtonthreeriversartfestival.com.

An onyx and diamond swan bracelet will be part of the 'Erté and the Era of Art Deco' exhibit at M.S. Rau Antiques.

What does "extemporaneous" mean?
Impromptu
extemporaneous Pronunciation: /ɪkˌstɛmpəˈreɪniəs/
Definition: done or spoken without preparation; improvised
Origin: Late Latin, from ex tempore 'out of the time' (i.e., 'on the spur of the moment')

NATIONAL LIQUEUR DAY | OCTOBER 16
National Liqueur Day on October 16th annually celebrates the myriad classes and flavors of liqueur.
The word liqueur comes from the Latin liquifacere, which means to liquefy. A liqueur is an alcoholic beverage made from a distilled spirit. Distillers flavor the spirit with fruit, cream, herbs, spices, flowers, or nuts. Next, they bottle it with added sugar or other sweeteners. While liqueurs are typically considerably sweet, distillers do not usually age their product long. They do, however, allow a resting period during production, which allows the flavors to marry.
With the broad selection of spirits available in seasonal, fragrant, and often curious flavors (vodkas and rums in particular), there is often confusion of liqueurs and liquors. In the United States and Canada, spirits are frequently called liquor. The most reliable rule of thumb to follow suggests that liqueurs comprise a sweeter, syrupy consistency, while liquors do not. Most liqueurs also have a lower alcohol content than spirits. However, some do contain as much as 55% ABV.
In parts of the United States, liqueurs may also be called cordials or schnapps.
Historically, liqueurs descend from herbal medicines prepared by monks in Italy as early as the 13th century. They steeped these often bitter herbs and sweetened them with sugar to make them more palatable to the monks' ailing patients. The curative's potency received a restful boost from its alcohol content as well.

1891: Morgan’s Louisiana & Texas Railroad Depot
An enlargement of an 1891 stereograph by John F. Jarvis of workers moving cotton bales along the wharf in front of Morgan's Louisiana & Texas Rail Road Depot. Their complex at the time spanned two large buildings on Water Street bounded by Lafayette Street, Delta Street, and Poydras Street. The Louisiana Ice Manufactory is the white building in the background, roughly in the middle of the block on Delta Street bounded by Lafayette Street, Front Street, and Poydras Street.
The orientation of the image appears to be looking nearly due north which has me wondering what the tall structure in the left background might be. The perspective would have to be southwest if this were to be the shot tower.
Front Street today would be where Convention Center Boulevard runs while Water Street and Delta Street are now part of the Riverwalk, the Hilton Riverside complex, and the Morial Convention Center.
The original stereograph was published by J.F. Jarvis of Washington, DC and sold by Underwood & Underwood whose offices were located in Baltimore and El Paso in the US, Ottawa and Toronto in Canada, and Liverpool in England. (LoC)

Saltwater Intrusion October 13, 2023 Update
Summary
- Overall, good news. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Algiers water treatment plant in New Orleans and Gretna water treatment plant in Jefferson Parish are no longer expected to see chloride levels above federal limits from salt water moving up the Mississippi River. The new forecast, based on water flow modeling by the Corps, also delays by two weeks the expected arrival of salt water at the Belle Chasse and Dalcour water treatment plant intakes in Plaquemines Parish. Salt water is now expected to reach the Belle Chasse plant on Oct. 27, and the Dalcour plant on Nov. 1. "The change in forecast is largely the result of augmentation of the existing underwater sill and increased flows of the Red River, requiring less diversion at the Old River Control Structure," said a Corps news release.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:
L'Hoste Citrus
In 1981, Lester and Linda L’Hoste began their journey into the world of citrus farming. They have been certified organic since 1996, and their produce is sold affordably at conventional prices. Their mission is to grow the best products for their customers, and they would like to extend a warm thanks to everyone who has supported their farm and family over the years. After damage from Hurricane Ida, the L’Hoste’s son wanted to join in the family business as well. This allowed them to expand their offerings this season beyond satsumas, grapefruits, and Meyer lemons to include heirloom pumpkin, squash, peppers, tomatoes, cantaloupe, and canary melon, “the sweetest melon you’ll ever taste,” according to Lester. Look for winter veggies like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and kale as the seasons change. Find L’Hoste Citrus at Tuesday and Thursday markets.

PIANIST DEANNA WITKOWSKI
On Wednesday, October 18, UNO's Jazz@theSandbar series welcomes Deanna Witkowski. Deanna will be performing
with Amina Scott's student ensemble.
Known for her adventurous, engaging music that heals the soul, pianist-composer-vocalist Deanna Witkowski moves with remarkable ease between Brazilian, jazz, classical, and sacred music. Witkowski’s explosive performances combine virtuosity and heart, telling stories that reveal her innate curiosity of the human condition. Her first book, Mary Lou Williams: Music For The Soul (Liturgical Press), published in September 2021, is the winner of the 2022 ASCAP Foundation Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award and the 2022 Jazz Journalists Association Award for Biography of the Year. Her seventh recording, Force of Nature (MCG Jazz), released in January 2022, reached number five on the JazzWeek nationwide radio chart and remained in the top ten most played albums on jazz radio for more than ten weeks. A frequent winner of composition competitions for her concert and sacred choral pieces, Witkowski has received funding for new work from the New York State Council on the Arts (for her Afro-Brazilian project, the Nossa Senhora Suite) and the Choral Arts Initiative PREMIERE|Project Festival.
Following in the steps of her chosen soul companion and lifelong mentor, Witkowski relocated to Mary Lou Williams’ hometown of Pittsburgh in 2020. She is a doctoral candidate in jazz studies at the University of Pittsburgh.
Jazz @ the Sandbar Concert Times: 7:00 - 9:30pm.
Location: The Cove, Founders Road, UNO Lakefront Campus.
Admission: Free to all, but please consider making a donation of $10 or more to the George Brumat scholarship fund. Donations can be made at the door in cash or online via this LINK (make sure to select Brumat Scholarship Fund in the menu of donation options).

Friday Night Wine School - Oktoberwein, Tasty Selections from Germany
Fri Oct 20, 2023 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM CDT Swirl, 70119
Join us for our attendance-limited, signup-only Friday night tasting! Tastings are held on the back patio with a max of 10 people per time slot.
We thought it might be nice to have an alternative to the beer-focused festivities and show you some fantastic German wines instead! Come celebrate the spirit of Oktoberfest - there is no better time to get acquainted — or re-acquainted — with the refreshing wines of Germany, one of the world’s coolest growing regions. While often overlooked, the wines typically are high-quality, versatile, food-friendly and crowd-pleasing with their vibrant fruit and often with bracing acidity.
Our friends at Uncorked have a portfolio that is chock full of great German wines from importers like Vom Boden and Selection Massale, both of which are known for authentic wines. Both portfolios focus primarily on small German growers, who are dedicated to showcasing and preserving the uniqueness of their vineyard sites and use a non-interventionist touch in the vineyard and cellar. This will be a SUPER lineup of whites, rosé, deliciously chillable reds and maybe a little surprise selection. We'll be working with Alex Minton to determine the wines and as it tends to go with these events, the hardest part is narrowing it down to 4 or 5 wines to present - so the lineup is TBA but we promise you will love it!
-All ticket sales are final.
-We will hold our tastings outside on the patio from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM on Fridays weather permitting, if it rains we move inside to the back of the shop.
-Your $5 tasting fee is refunded when you purchase a bottle of wine from the tasting. Limit 1 refund per bottle per customer.
-Please arrive 5 minutes early for your time slot, as we may not be able to move you to another spot.
-No waiting in line for your taste of wine in a plastic cup and snippet of info. During your time slot, you will have the presenter's undivided attention as you learn about and taste the wines from Riedel glassware.
-When your tasting is over, you can browse and shop or enjoy a glass or bottle at our indoor and outdoor tables.

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.
See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

ABOUT NICKEL-A-DANCE
Now in its 30th Year, NICKEL-A-DANCE is a free series of Sunday afternoon jazz concerts that began in 1994, and now take place each Spring and Fall season that is a hit with children, families, seniors and the general dancing public who don’t tend to go to night clubs. It attracts a diverse group of fans that meet on Frenchmen Street to celebrate jazz as America’s original dance music, while listening to the best of today’s classic jazz bands.
"Nickel" offers a weekly dance soirée that is friendly to lovers of all ages, where drinking from a bar is not a central focus of the gathering.
WHAT MAKES "NICKEL" SPECIAL?
New Orleans' longest-running traditional jazz dance series!
A precursor to popular "swing" dancing, the style of dance that accompanies this style of traditional New Orleans jazz is now a rare happening, making the NICKEL-A-DANCE series a delicate and unique weekly gathering among a plethora of live music showcases around the Crescent City.
This season, the series features acclaimed bandleaders from musical families that go back generations in New Orleans Jazz history, over the course of four Sundays.

Kermit Ruffins
& The BBQ Swingers
From playing himself in the HBO Series Tremé, to barbecuing outside his bar, Kermit’s Treme Mother-in-Law Lounge, to sitting in with Jon Batiste and Stay Human on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, trumpeter & vocalist
Kermit Ruffins keeps himself busy when he isn’t on stage doing what he does best—entertaining and sharing his love of life with the world.
But he did not come by his gifts easily. Ruffins did his homework and developed his stage persona and musical act by studying artists who came before him. He watched videos of Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway until the tape wore out, cut his teeth busking the streets of the French Quarter, and apprenticed on stages with local legends “Uncle” Lionel Batiste and Danny Barker. While still in high school, he co-founded the Rebirth Brass Band, but eventually left the touring band to return home to the culture he missed so much, launching The BBQ Swingers, now a beloved New Orleans institution.
Some say Ruffins resembles king pops, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong himself.
Join us this evening for Kermit's first time back at Nickel-A-Dance
in more than 5 years, and you be the judge...!

Herlin Riley
& The Crescent City Joymakers
with special guest Shannon Powell!
New Orleans is a drummer’s town. But in this town full of first class drummers, Herlin Riley is “the” drummer. The Baron of the Boom Boom. The Pulse that keeps the life flowing through any body of work.
Born into a musical family steeped in gospel, blues and jazz, Herlin was asked by Wynton Marsalis to join him in New York in 1988 where Herlin stayed for almost 20 years, all the while still maintaining a home in New Orleans.
Today, he still is a regularly featured musician with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, but has since been based back in his hometown when he wasn't on tour with Ahmad Jamal, Dr. John, or Harry Connick, Jr. He lights up any stage with just his presence alone, and always fires up the first class musicians who love to play with him.
+ Plus! "The King of Tremé," Mr. Shannon Powell himself guests for this special installment of Nickel, making for a powerful rhythm fest of a finale to our 30th Year carrying the flame for jazz-dance tradition.

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge
Story by Zack Nagy
© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation
LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.
The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.
LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.
Related video
Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).
Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.
LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.
The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.
LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.
