NATIONAL MULLIGAN DAY | OCTOBER 17

National Mulligan Day is observed annually on October 17th.

In golf, a mulligan happens when a player gets a second chance to perform a specific move or action. The day offers an opportunity for giving yourself a second chance or, as some people call it, a “do-over.”

According to the United States Golf Association (USGA), three different stories explain the origin of the term. The first derives from the name of a Canadian golfer, David Mulligan, a one-time manager of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, who played golf in the 1920s. A different, later, etymology gives credit to John A. “Buddy” Mulligan, a locker room attendant at Essex Fells C.C., New Jersey, in the 1930s. Another story, according to author Henry Beard, states that the term comes from Thomas Mulligan, a minor Anglo-Irish aristocrat and a passionate golfer who was born in 1793.

According to the United States Golf Association (USGA), the term first achieved widespread use in the 1940s.

NATIONAL PASTA DAY | OCTOBER 17

October is National Pasta Month, and October 17th recognizes National Pasta Day.  Pasta lovers celebrate!

While we find noodles all over the world, pasta is a type of noodle of traditional Italian cuisine. The first reference dates to 1154 in Sicily and was first attested to in English in 1874. Typically, it is made from an unleavened dough of durum wheat flour. The flour is mixed with water or eggs and formed into sheets or various shapes. It can then be served fresh or dried to be stored for later use.

Types of Pasta

Look for pasta in pasta in both savory and dessert dishes. Since it’s so versatile, pasta lends itself to sweet and every other dish on the table. Cooks feature pasta as a main dish, but they also serve up delicious hot and cold side dishes as well. And then, of course, those special desserts we can’t resist making our mouths water.

Cooks originally made fresh pasta by hand. However, today, many varieties of fresh pasta are made commercially. Large-scale machines bring choices to our grocers daily. Smaller pasta machines on the market make having the freshest pasta at home even easier.

  • Dried and fresh pasta come in several shapes and varieties.
  • There are so many kinds of pasta! According to the Encyclopedia of Pasta by Oretta Zanini De Vita, 310 specific kinds of pasta identified by over 1300 names have been documented.
  • In Italy, names of specific pasta shapes or types vary with locale.
  • Example: Cavatelli is known by 28 different names depending on the region and town.

The size and shape of pasta may determine the best sauce to pair with it, too. For example, serve linguine with lighter, thinner sauces to avoid breaking the noodles. A similarly shaped noodle, fettuccine, is less delicate. That’s why it carries heavier sauces like alfredo.

Learn more about pasta from the National Pasta Association.

October 17th Celebrated History

1814

When an iron ring holding together a fermentation tank snapped at the Horse Shoe Brewery in St. Giles, London, the ensuing flood collapsed one of the brewery walls sending a tidal wave of beer into the streets of Tottenham Court Road. The exploding vat also damaged other vats in the brewery causing more than 320,000 gallons of beer to fill basements and damage to surrounding houses. In the aftermath, 8 people died as a result of the fermented fury.

1855

Sir Henry Bessemer patented his steelmaking process that would later become known as the Bessemer Process. By blowing air into molten pig iron, Bessemer used oxidation to remove impurities from the iron.

In conjunction with our annual "Creole Death and Mourning" exhibit (https://bit.ly/3TGHAEo), Gallier House is pleased to present "Death and The Maiden" by artist and photographer Brittany Markert. The exhibit presents 12 photographic works taken inside Gallier House. Guided by her intuition within the space, Markert focuses on the figures of the women in black, who initiate the series’ protagonist into a ritual and acceptance of death. The title "Death and The Maiden" subverts a common motif throughout Renaissance art wherein a frail masculine skeleton seizes a young girl towards her fate; in Markert’s work, calling upon the silence and trauma of Victorian womanhood, the archetypes are re-imagined through the women in black and transformation of the central character. As a film photographer and printer, Markert creates otherworldly effects all in-camera or in the darkroom process. The work is an invitation, alongside the house exhibit, to consider the soul of the house and the role of Death in our every day.

This exhibition is free and open to the public six days a week (Wednesdays through Mondays) from 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM. Stop by the Gallier House exhibition space and ticket office to view these works and learn more. Exhibition runs Oct. 5th - Nov. 14th,

$24.99 - $99.99

7:00pm - 10:00pm

Seasonal haunted house with attractions like Outcast Carnival, The Bloodrite and Chop House, with add ons.

After a failed carnival went bankrupt, the sideshow performers were shunned by society and took to the sewers for shelter. After years of no interaction with the outside world, the performers have become rabid and feed on anything that wanders into their domain.

A beautiful but sadistic aristocrat has imbued herself with eternal supernatural powers by performing brutal voodoo-inspired sacrificial rituals that bind her enemies to her. The Blood Queen rises every harvest moon to lure more followers into succumbing to her blood ritual. The time is upon us- will you be a feast for the Queen or bask in her glory?

A criminal outcast has wandered into the old meat processing plant. After finding the company’s mascot costume and a freshly oiled chainsaw, the unpredictable maniac begins the hunt for the next slaughter.

LINE-UP:

October 23rd

Will Smith

& His New Orleans Jass Katz

Trumpeter Will Smith was introduced to jazz at an early age by his older sister, civil rights activist and longtime early Jazz Fest and Preservation Hall staffer, Dodie Smith-Simmons, and his brother-in-law, fellow trumpeter John "Kid" Simmons, who would take him almost nightly to Preservation Hall as a youth.

In 1975, Will joined the Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band, founded by legendary jazzman and author Danny Barker. Later, Will organized his own band, The Jass Katz, but also played and toured with famed bands like Dejean's Olympia Brass Band, Chosen Few Brass Band, Tremé Brass Band, and the Original Pinstripe Brass Band. Today, he is a resident musician at Preservation Hall Jazz, and a youth educator in New Orleans schools.

October 30th

Herlin Riley

& Traditional MajestyNew Orleans is a drummer’s town. But in this town full of first class drummers, Herlin Riley is “the” drummer. The Baron of the Boom Boom. The Pulse that keeps the life flowing through any body of work.

Born into a musical family steeped in gospel, blues, and jazz, Herlin was asked by Wynton Marsalis to join him in New York City in 1988 where Herlin stayed for almost two decades, all the while maintaining a home in New Orleans.

He is still a regularly featured musician with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, but has been based back in his hometown for several years now -- that is, when he wasn't on tour with Ahmad Jamal, Dr. John, or Harry Connick Jr. He lights up any stage with just his presence alone, and always fires up the first class musicians who love to play with him.

Night Show: 7:00 p.m.

The LSU Department of Bands and the LSU School of Music are proud to present the 40th annual Tigerama: a musical extravaganza for all ages, featuring The Golden Band from Tigerland, LSU Wind Ensemble, LSU Symphonic Winds, Golden Girls and Colorguard.

Tigerama began as a recruiting event over three decades ago by the late Director of Bands Frank Wickes. Through his vision and fortitude, the event grew increasingly popular and became a iconic representation of some of the best music LSU has to offer. Proceeds from Tigerama go to support the LSU Tiger Marching Band and the Department of Bands in the LSU School of Music. Recently, funds raised through Tigerama, along with the efforts of other gracious donors, enabled the entire Tiger Band to perform in Dublin, Ireland at the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
