NATIONAL HORROR MOVIE DAY
National Horror Movie Day happens on October 23 on the National Day Calendar. If you love a good fright, today is the perfect day to promote the beauty and cathartic thrills of being scared by great horror movies.
Halloween is in the air bringing together fans of witches, ghouls, zombies, monsters, spiders, and pumpkins. Stores are filled with everything Halloween fans love. In fact, Halloween is a time when an abundance of horror movies are available for viewing in theatres and on streaming apps.
Horror movies have been around since about 1886 when French filmmaker Georges Melies created a short film called "Le Manoir du Diable" or The Haunted Castle. The film was a mere three minutes long and included witches, demons, and special effects that created supernatural occurrences. Since then, horror movies have evolved into different genres that consist of common elements.
3 Main Horror Movie Genres
- Fear and suspense horror movies aim to make the audience feel fear or anxiety. They often use suspenseful build-ups, jump scares, and eerie atmospheres to achieve this.
- Supernatural or paranormal horror films involve supernatural or paranormal phenomena such as ghosts, demons, monsters, vampires, zombies, or otherworldly forces. These elements often serve as the source of fear.
- Psychological horror movies delve into the psychological aspects of fear by exploring themes like insanity, obsession, or the breakdown of the human psyche. Movies like Psycho and The Shining are examples of psychological horror.
Horror films have been a significant part of movie culture with classic and influential works that continue to captivate audiences. The goal of any good horror movie is to elicit strong emotional responses from the audience, including fear and anxiety to shock and disgust. While some people watch horror movies for the adrenaline rush and excitement, others enjoy them for the psychological aspect horror movies offer.
What makes a good horror movie?
Every horror movie capitalizes on the fear of being isolated or trapped in a terrifying situation with no escape. Locations are always isolated or remote, like haunted houses or remote cabins. The survival of a character or characters depends on their resourcefulness and how resilient they are while finding and escape.
A good horror movie knows music plays a critical role in creating unnerving tension. In fact, the right kind of music and sound can heighten a scene and scare anyone who is watching. One of the most defying moments in horror movie history was the music and sound effects playing during the film Psycho. Without the effects of spine-chilling sound and music, Psycho would have been just another film.
All horror movies carry a dark theme that explores death, taboo, madness, or the afterlife. Oftentimes, horror movies also include social fear and anxiety with characters to heighten the fear factor. However, dark themes are never complete without the effect of makeup and visual effects to create terrifying creatures and gruesome scenes for the characters. A combination every horror movie requires.
5 Popular Horror Movies of All Time
- The Exorcist (1973) is a classic horror movie that follows the possession of a young girl and the attempts to perform an exorcism on her to remove a demon from her body.
- Halloween (1978) introduced the iconic slasher villain Michael Myers, who follows a babysitter on Halloween night. This iconic horror movie would eventually transition into 12 additional films.
- The Shining (1980) is a movie based on the Stephen Kings novel The Shining. The movie tells of a writer who goes mad while taking care of a remote hotel during the winter.
- The Conjuring (2013) is a movie based on a true story by the real-life investigations of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
- Hereditary (2018) is a psychological horror flick that enters the theme of family trauma and the supernatural. Hereditary has received critical acclaim for its unsettling atmosphere and earie portrayal of characters.

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay to open first Louisiana restaurant in Lake Charles
by: Scott Yoshonis
LAKE CHARLES, La. (KLFY) — What happens when one of the world’s most famous chefs comes to Louisiana, one of the world’s most renowned food destinations? We’re about to find out.
Celebrity chef and TV personality Gordon Ramsay is opening a restaurant in Lake Charles at the Horseshoe Lake Charles Hotel and Casino, his first venture into Louisiana, according to the resort’s website.
New restaurant will bring ‘Central Texas-style BBQ’ to Baton Rouge
The restaurant, called Gordon Ramsay Steak, will not attempt to duplicate or imitate the distinctive cuisine of Louisiana, according to its menu on OpenTable.com. Instead, it will feature upscale steakhouse fares like American Wagyu and prime-grade steaks and chops, as well as Ramsay’s signature dish, beef Wellington.
“I’m honored to open a Gordon Ramsay Steak at the brand-new Horseshoe Lake Charles,” said Ramsay, as quoted in a report in BusinessWire. “My continued partnership with Caesars Entertainment has provided many exciting opportunities and I’m thrilled to introduce Louisiana to Gordon Ramsay Steak and bring world-class dishes and impeccable service to our guests.”
According to the report, the restaurant will seat over 200 guests overlooking the lake and feature a full bar “serving photo-worthy cocktails and an extensive wine list.”
No opening date has been announced. The restaurant’s page on the casino’s website says “Coming Soon,” and the first reservations available at OpenTable.com are on Nov. 15.
The Horseshoe Lake Charles Hotel and Casino is located at 100 Westlake Ave. in Westlake.

NATIONAL BOSTON CREAM PIE DAY
National Boston Cream Pie Day serves up a delicious dessert on October 23rd each year. Pie lovers, move along. Cake lovers, pull up a chair. Let's celebrate the cake with an identity crisis! Boston Cream Pie is a chocolate frosted, custard-filled cake that is loved by millions.
In 1856, at Boston’s Parker House Hotel, French chef Monsieur Augustine Francois Anezin created this pudding and cake combination.
The decadent cake comprises two layers of sponge cake filled with vanilla-flavored custard or creme patisserie. The cake is then topped with a chocolate glaze, such as a ganache or sometimes powdered sugar and a cherry.
In 1996, Massachusetts declared the Boston Cream Pie as their official dessert.

What is the modern equivalent of the word "behoove"?
Benefit
In the realm of modern language, "benefit" serves as the contemporary counterpart to the archaic term "behoove." While "behoove" conveyed the notion of being advantageous or necessary, "benefit" encapsulates a similar essence but in a more accessible and widely understood manner. The word "benefit" encompasses the idea of gaining an advantage, profit, or positive outcome. It implies that something is worthwhile or advantageous, highlighting the potential benefits or rewards of a particular action or decision. Embraced by modern society, "benefit" has seamlessly replaced "behoove" as a more relatable and practical term to express the concept of something being advantageous or beneficial.

The Streets of New Orleans
When I post old photographs, I always enjoy a silent chuckle when people express the romantic notion “I wish I could have lived back then” without thinking about what that time period was really like. For instance, they look at an old photograph of people crossing Canal Street and notice how well-dressed everyone is. What they never remark on is how dark and dirty the city was, being a riot of numerous unpleasant odors surrounded by periodic fires, frequent floods, swarms of determined mosquitos that blessed us with all manner of disease, and, of course, hurricanes and tropical storms.
The gutters of New Orleans were the receptacles of nearly all of the city’s liquid waste as well as a diverse selection of animal debris, rubbish, and garbage. The first photograph dates from 1864 – 1865 of the Poydras Market and just look at the gutters in the center foreground. The next two photographs below are detailed looks at gutters in 1880 – the first at St. Charles and Canal Street and the second on Orleans Avenue behind St. Louis Cathedral. The assault on the olfactory senses would have been unmistakable, but the downtown drainage system was the least of the city’s problems.
The suburban neighborhoods with their largely unpaved streets forced excessive rainfall into the soil already saturated with the oozing of foul privy-vaults and the infiltration of accumulation on the streets and in the rear of houses. Lovely.
In 1880, the city had only three old Dutch paddle-wheel pumps to remove standing water – one on Dublin Street, one at Bayou St. John, and one at London Avenue. But during the thunderstorms that accompanied tropical storms, the water often exceeded the capacity of the gutters and drainage canals, flooding the streets as much as half a mile from the levees.

This allowed them to expand their offerings this season beyond satsumas, grapefruits, and Meyer lemons to include heirloom pumpkin, squash, peppers, tomatoes, cantaloupe, and canary melon, “the sweetest melon you’ll ever taste,” according to Lester. Look for winter veggies like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and kale as the seasons change. Find L’Hoste Citrus at Tuesday and Thursday markets.

Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein
comes to Jefferson Performing Arts Center just in time for Halloween!
The musical comedy is directed by Big Easy Award Winning Director Leslie Castay
(October 17, 2023—Metairie, Louisiana)—Jefferson Performing Arts Society presents a five-show run of the award-winning Broadway musical Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein, opening Friday, October 27th at Jefferson Performing Arts Center and closing Sunday, November 5th. The show is directed by Leslie Castay, who won Best Director of a Musical for the JPAS 2022 production of the multiple Big Easy Award-winning Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn.
The original Broadway production of Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein (2008) was nominated for 3 Tonys, 4 Drama Desk Awards, 2 Drama League Awards, and 5 Outer Critics Circle Awards—for which it won Best Musical. In 2009, it was nominated for a Grammy for “Best Musical Theater Album”.
Based on the 1974 Mel Brooks (Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles) movie starring and co-written by Gene Wilder, Young Frankenstein follows the story of Frederick Frankenstein, the grandson of the infamous Dr. Victor Frankenstein. When Frederick inherits the family castle in Transylvania, he becomes obsessed with his grandfather’s reanimation experiments. Assisted by a bizarre cast of characters that include Igor, Inga, and Frau Blücher, Frederick attempts to bring a creature to life, just like his granddad—only to realize he’s created a monster problem.
Featuring music and lyrics written by Brooks, the musical offers even more hilarity and wordplay than the original movie with songs such as The Brain, Transylvania Mania, He Vas My Boyfriend, and Roll in the Hay. The goofiness and gags of the 1974 movie are enhanced by the song and dance numbers presented by a 22-person all-local cast with a dynamic ensemble of 15, led by these principal cast members:
Michael Paternostro*-DR. FREDERICK FRANKENSTEIN
Adriel Aviles-MONSTER
Scott Sauber-IGOR
Charlie Carr-INGA
Jennifer DeLatte-ELIZABETH BENNING
Meredith Long - Dieth*-FRAU BLUCHER
Adam Seagrave--THE HERMIT / INSPECTOR HANS KEMP
The production features a live orchestra conducted by Maestro Dennis Assaf with Ken Leach as Music Director, Jaune Buisson as Choreographer, Emery Foster as Scenic Designer, Olivia Winter as Props Designer, Stephen Thurber as Lighting Designer, and Eric Porter as Technical Director and Sound Designer.
For a full cast and crew list and ticket information visit https://www.jpas.org/performance/young-frankenstein/ or call 504-885-2000 to purchase tickets by phone.

We're happy to bring a piece of the past back to WYES starting this weekend. Tune in Saturdays at 1pm. The original 26 episodes of GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS will air on WYES, followed by other episodes of the multi-part series every Saturday.
Thanks to executive producer John Shoup for sharing the series (produced and directed by the late John Beyer) with us. It begins Saturday in the kitchen of the legendary Chef Warren Leruth, and you'll see many other local icons below in the weeks to come. THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.
See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

St. Tammany’s big 10 fall flings
BY JESSICA SAGGIO
•Oct. 28: Symphony on The Lake
Grab those chairs and enjoy a sunset over Lake Pontchartrain with the soothing sounds of classical music from the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra.
Symphony on the Lake will take place at the Mandeville Lakefront between Coffee and Carroll streets from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 28. The LPO will perform works by Copland, Brahms, Britten, Saint-Saens, Duke, Gershwin, Offenbach, Williams, Sousa and others. Food trucks will be on site at this free event, but picnics will also be permitted.
•Nov. 3-5: Ozone Songwriters Festival
One of the north shore’s signature events for up-and-coming talent, the Ozone Songwriters Festival, the festival will host more than 130 local, regional and national music artists who will sing their hearts across four stages. The event features not only musical talent, but songwriting talent. A VIP Showcase will take place Nov. 3 at the Old Rail Brewing Company, with performances by event creator and Grammy-nominated recording artist Greg Barnhill, among others. Tickets for the showcase range from $65 to $130.
The following days will include performances and a songwriter contest where a winner will be selected for a one-song record deal. Specific details about this portion of the event and stage locations have not been finalized yet.
A songwriter workshop will also take place where budding artists can learn the ins and outs of studio recording, social media, engineering and more. The cost to attend the workshop is $40. More information on the workshop will be posted on the festival’s website at ozonemusic.org as details are announced.
“The festival gives new songwriters the chance to be in front of a live audience and have their songs heard, and to gain valuable stage experience, as well as get a reaction to their songs,” said Barnhill. “It’s also a great experience for the audience, for they might just be seeing the next Usher or Taylor Swift.”
•Nov. 10-12: Festival of the Lake
Our Lake of the Lake Roman Catholic Church will again host its annual fair at its campus on Lafitte Street in Mandeville. The free event will run 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Nov. 10-11, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 12. This year’s Festival of the Lake will include inflatables, a craft market, petting zoo, pony rides, sock hop, baseball mania, games, food, a “doggie dance” by the Northshore Humane Society and a host of live performances.
This year’s music lineup includes Bag of Donuts, Peyton Falgoust Band, Adam Pearce, and Christian Serpas & Ghost Town. Just be sure to bring chairs for the concert.
Activities at the festival will require tickets that can be purchased for 50 cents each. Early bird tickets will be available on the festival’s website at festivalofthelake.com.
•Nov. 11-12: 3 Rivers Art Festival
Touted as one of the largest juried art shows in the region, the 3 Rivers Art Festival returns to downtown Covington Nov. 11-12. The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. More than 200 juried artists from across the nation, and world in some cases, will line both sides of Columbia Street featuring myriad artistic mediums.
“We have everything,” said event coordinator Sarada Bonnett. “Woodworking, watercolor, metalsmithing, glass and everything in between. 2D, 3D paintings. You name it, it’s there.”
Artists were vetted from nearly 500 applicants, she said, and the festival has been recognized by Sunshine Artist as one of the best in the country. Artist awards will be presented at a special event on Saturday night.
Live music will feature Crispin Schroeder, Those Olivier’s, The Teche Two, Dr. Ben Redwine, Lake Ragan, Ghost Town Duo, Jude LeBlanc and Jake Gunter.
A tented food court will be set up for patrons, and a children’s village will keep the kiddos occupied with a hands-on dinosaur experience, children’s museum activities and canvas painting. A separate student art contest is also part of the event and winners will be awarded that Sunday at 2 p.m. For more, visit covingtonthreeriversartfestival.com.

ABOUT NICKEL-A-DANCE
Now in its 30th Year, NICKEL-A-DANCE is a free series of Sunday afternoon jazz concerts that began in 1994, and now take place each Spring and Fall season that is a hit with children, families, seniors and the general dancing public who don’t tend to go to night clubs. It attracts a diverse group of fans that meet on Frenchmen Street to celebrate jazz as America’s original dance music, while listening to the best of today’s classic jazz bands.
"Nickel" offers a weekly dance soirée that is friendly to lovers of all ages, where drinking from a bar is not a central focus of the gathering.
WHAT MAKES "NICKEL" SPECIAL?
New Orleans' longest-running traditional jazz dance series!
A precursor to popular "swing" dancing, the style of dance that accompanies this style of traditional New Orleans jazz is now a rare happening, making the NICKEL-A-DANCE series a delicate and unique weekly gathering among a plethora of live music showcases around the Crescent City.
This season, the series features acclaimed bandleaders from musical families that go back generations in New Orleans Jazz history, over the course of four Sundays.

Celebrate Our 30th Anniversary with Us this Season!
October 29th
Herlin Riley
& The Crescent City Joymakers
with special guest Shannon Powell!
New Orleans is a drummer’s town. But in this town full of first class drummers, Herlin Riley is “the” drummer. The Baron of the Boom Boom. The Pulse that keeps the life flowing through any body of work.
Born into a musical family steeped in gospel, blues and jazz, Herlin was asked by Wynton Marsalis to join him in New York in 1988 where Herlin stayed for almost 20 years, all the while still maintaining a home in New Orleans.
Today, he still is a regularly featured musician with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, but has since been based back in his hometown when he wasn't on tour with Ahmad Jamal, Dr. John, or Harry Connick, Jr. He lights up any stage with just his presence alone, and always fires up the first class musicians who love to play with him.
+ Plus! "The King of Tremé," Mr. Shannon Powell himself guests for this special installment of Nickel, making for a powerful rhythm fest of a finale to our 30th Year carrying the flame for jazz-dance tradition.

For the first time last year, the krewe conducted a mini festival in Mickey Markey Park, at Royal and Piety streets in the Bywater, before the parade. Albarran said this year the pre-parade event will be more elaborate, with more vendors, music, and kids’ activities. Traditional Day of the Dead bread will be available, and there will be a costume fashion show.
New this year, the krewe plans to erect a temporary stage at the parade stopping point on St. Roch Avenue near St. Roch Cemetery for speakers and musical performances.
Everyone is welcome to participate in the procession. Customarily, costumes combine mourning clothes with masks and makeup that blend macabre skulls with floral patterns. Marchers often bring candles.
Albarran said, however, that costuming and candles are entirely optional. “We only want people to come and have a magical night,” she said.
- From 4:30 to 6 p.m., the pre-parade fiesta takes place in Mickey Markey Park at 3301 Royal St.
- At 6:30 p.m. the parade will line up on Royal Street.
- At 7 p.m. the parade proceeds on Royal Street, turns right on Franklin Avenue, left on St. Claude Avenue, and right on St. Roch Avenue.
- The parade concludes outside of St. Claude Cemetery, 1725 St. Roch Ave., where singing, performances and mourning ceremonies continue.

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge
Story by Zack Nagy
© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation
LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.
The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.
LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.
Related video
Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).
Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.
LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.
The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.
LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.
