NATIONAL CINNAMON RAISIN BREAD DAY | SEPTEMBER 16

On September 16th, National Cinnamon Raisin Bread Day warms the home and the heart with delicious goodness. In bakeries across the country, we request cinnamon raisin bread more often than many others. Naturally sweet, the aroma created from baking this bread will make anyone's mouth water.

Cinnamon raisin bread toasts nicely and pairs well with several toppings. Homemade apple butter, cream cheese or sliced pears bring this baked good to a whole new level. Eat it for breakfast or snack.

"Have you tried the cinnamon things?" Poppet asks.

"They're rather new. What are they called, Widge?"

"Fantastically delicious cinnamon things?"

Another delicious way to use cinnamon raisin bread is by making French toast. Wisk up eggs, milk, vanilla, and nutmeg in a bowl. Dip the bread in the batter and let it soak up the egg mixture. Fry each piece on a hot griddle. Serve with fresh fruit and maple syrup and your morning will start off amazingly!

The same idea can be applied to an egg bake, too. When prepared ahead, egg bakes made with cinnamon raisin bread easily feed a large family or guests for the weekend. You'll impress everyone with a cinnamony sweet dish like that.

MAYFLOWER DAY

Mayflower Day commemorates the day the ship set sail from Plymouth, England in 1620. On September 16 of 1620, the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, England with 102 souls on board. These colonists- men, women, children, some seeking fortune, some seeking religious freedom - were later known as pilgrims.

The colonists' intended to land in Virginia. However, after 66 days at sea, storms and winds blew them off course. After spotting modern-day Cape Cod, the members of the Mayflower intended on exploring the mouth of the Hudson River. However, rough seas continued to plague the ship. They turned back and stayed at Cape Cod.

For the next few weeks, the Pilgrims explored Cape Cod and eventually settled on Plymouth for their plantation.

Uptown, Tuesday Farmers Market in New OrleansNext Market: September 17, 2024

8 AM - 12 PM

Uptown Square

200 Broadway Street at the River

Directions and Parking Tips

The Tuesday Market is located Uptown near the Mississippi River levee at Tulane University Square (originally known Uptown Square). Find us in the northeast corner of the parking lot between Leake Avenue and Broadway Street. There's plenty of free onsite parking.

RTA Lines 57, 31, and 32 pass right by market! Click here to view route 57 or click here for route 31/32.

From I-10

From I-10/Pontchartrain Expressway, take the South Carrollton exit. If you're coming from Metairie, the ramp will merge with South Carrollton heading toward the Mississippi River; if driving from Downtown or New Orleans East, turn left at the first traffic signal (Palmetto Street) then right at South Carrollton. Go 2.2 miles to the end of South Carrollton and turn left on Leake Avenue. With the levee on your right, continue 0.8 miles; the Market will be in the parking lot to your left, just before Leake meets Broadway.

No Cash? No Problem!

All of our vendors accept cash and tokens. Swipe for tokens on-site at the orange Welcome Tent with debit, credit, or EBT SNAP.

Life is good in New Orleans when the Saints are winning, and a number of other recent rankings highlight the special quality of life in the New Orleans region:

  • Work/Life Balance - Last week Travel & Leisure wrote that the internet believes that New Orleans has the Best Work/Life Balance in America. T&L says that New Orleans is the best place to “work and still enjoy life.”
  • Food - Earlier this year, Trip Advisor named New Orleans the No. 1 Food Destination in the U.S.. They said, ““With its famed culinary scene, New Orleans has held onto its title for number one Food Destination in the U.S. for a second year in a row.”
  • Walkability - AllClear recently ranked New Orleans as The Most Walkable City in the US, stating: “New Orleans' pedestrian-friendly French Quarter and Central Business District span two miles and are packed with more than 500 eateries and nearly 100 attractions.”
  • Transit - New Geography writes that New Orleans is Top Five in the US for Auto/Transit Ratio – that is, jobs reachable by public transportation. They say that, “somewhat surprisingly,” New Orleans beats out Philadelphia and Boston.

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

6th Ward Steppers Second Tribute to

Frankie Beverly

On Monday, September 16, 2024, the Sixth Ward Steppers will present a second line in tribute to vocalist Frankie Beverly, who passed away on September 10, 2024 at the age of 74.

While Beverly, who led his band Maze, was from Philadelphia, he was beloved here in New Orleans and particularly noted in the Crescent City for the album "Live in New Orleans" that was recorded at the Saenger Theater. He was also regaled for his many exciting appearances at the Essence Festival. Favorite tunes like "Joy and Pain" and "Happy Feelin's" had folks groovin' and at the end of the night doing the line-dance the electric slide throughout the Dome.

Folks are encouraged to wear all white as Beverly always did at the second line which begins at 6:30 pm at Hunter's Field, St. Bernard Ave. and N. Claiborne. It then travels to the Candlelight Lounge, 925 North Robertson Street.

In wine bottles, what is the "punt"?

 The cork

 The indent on the bottom

 The liquid content

 The color of the bottle

In a wine bottle, the "punt" is the indentation on the bottom of the bottle; it's the small dip at the base.

Explanation: The punt is a small depression formed during the glass blowing process, and while it may have originally served a structural purpose, today it is mostly considered a traditional design feature.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, August 19

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL GUACAMOLE DAY | SEPTEMBER 16

National Guacamole Day on September 16th brings fresh flavors together for the perfect celebration.

Avocados shine as the star of this dip! Lime juice, tomatoes, onion, and seasonings make guacamole a guilt-free addition to any snack or meal.

Since avocados fall under the superfood category, feel free to indulge. Expect a flavorful dip packed full of good fats and nutrients, along with the fresh taste of lime and hint of spice. It is easy to make, too. Take it to work or use it for a party dish.

Guacamole is versatile, too. For example, add it as a topping on a quesadilla or even add it to a salad. You can even spread it on your morning toast! Of course, the simplest way to enjoy is by dipping your favorite tortilla chip.

Guacamole originated with the Aztecs in Mexico and made its way into American cuisine as a dip, condiment, and salad ingredient.

Using a mortar and pestle, mash ripe avocados and then mixing in sea salt. Beyond the basic ingredients, you can also add hot sauce, yogurt, or other seasonings. If a celebration calls for spicier guacamole, add jalapenos, chilis, cumin, or red pepper.

NATIONAL PLAY-DOH DAY

National Play-Doh Day on September 16 recognizes a child's modeling clay. However, before it found its way to the craft shelf, Play-Doh had more practical uses. Join us as we share as much information about play-doh and get your sculpting creativity going, too!

Play-Doh inventor, Joe McVicker of Cincinnati, Ohio, sold it initially as a wallpaper cleaner. When his father died in 1949, his mother promptly hired him and his brother-in-law to help with the family business, Kutol Products Company. Right about that time, oil furnaces began replacing coal-burning furnaces. It wasn't long before the wallpaper cleaner sales dwindled.

In 1955, McVicker began testing the cleaner as a modeling clay in classrooms and daycares for students. Seeing the product worked, he named it Play-Doh and he went into business with his uncle under the name of the Rainbow Crafts Company, Inc. a year later. To protect their new product, McVicker filed for a patent in 1958. However, the patent wasn't approved until January 26, 1965. By then, General Mills had purchased the company.

At first Rainbow Crafts Company offered only one color - white. But soon, red, blue, and yellow followed. The company sold them by the gallon. Once again, they modified their offerings and 11-ounce sizes were offered.

Around the same time, McVicker was testing Play-Doh, a new children's television show began broadcasting on CBS. Bob Keeshan played the role of Captain Kangaroo. While Play-Doh's sales were nice, they weren't spectacular. McVicker had an idea. He asked Captain Kangaroo to promote his modeling clay on his show. The children's television show host agreed and the children's iconic modeling clay took off!

In 1998, the Toy Hall of Fame inducted Play-Doh into its hallowed halls.

The Most Overlooked Grammar Rules That Can Transform Your Writing

The Importance of Grammar in Writing

Many writers underestimate the power of grammar in transforming their prose. While grammar rules might seem tedious or overly formal, they play a crucial role in conveying your ideas clearly and effectively. By mastering some of the most overlooked grammar rules, you can elevate your writing from mediocre to exceptional. In this post, we will explore several key grammar principles that can significantly enhance your writing style and clarity.

The Power of the Oxford Comma

The Oxford comma, also known as the serial comma, is the final comma in a list of three or more items. For example, in the sentence "I love reading, writing, and hiking," the Oxford comma comes before "and." While some style guides advocate for its use, others deem it unnecessary. However, using the Oxford comma can prevent ambiguity and misinterpretation. Consider the difference between "I want to thank my parents, Oprah Winfrey and God" (which suggests that Oprah Winfrey and God are your parents) and "I want to thank my parents, Oprah Winfrey, and God." The inclusion of the Oxford comma clarifies your intention and ensures your writing is precise.

Subject-Verb Agreement

Subject-verb agreement is a fundamental grammar rule that requires the subject and verb in a sentence to match in number. This rule may seem simple, but it can be easily overlooked, especially in complex sentences. For instance, the sentence "The list of items are on the table" is incorrect; it should read "The list of items is on the table" because "list" is the subject and is singular. Paying attention to subject-verb agreement can enhance the professionalism of your writing and prevent distracting errors that detract from your message.

Active vs. Passive Voice

Understanding the difference between active and passive voice can significantly impact your writing style. In active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action (e.g., "The dog chased the ball"), while in passive voice, the subject receives the action (e.g., "The ball was chased by the dog"). Active voice is generally more engaging and direct, making it preferable for most writing. It creates a sense of immediacy and clarity, which can draw readers in. However, passive voice has its place in writing, particularly when the focus should be on the action or the recipient. Striking the right balance between the two can enhance the readability and effectiveness of your writing.

The Dreaded Run-On Sentences

Run-on sentences occur when two or more independent clauses are joined without proper punctuation or conjunctions. They can confuse readers and dilute the strength of your writing. For example, the sentence "I love to write it helps me express my thoughts" is a run-on. It should be revised to either "I love to write; it helps me express my thoughts" or "I love to write because it helps me express my thoughts." Breaking up long sentences or using appropriate punctuation can improve the flow of your writing and ensure that your ideas are communicated clearly.

Misplaced Modifiers

Misplaced modifiers can create confusion and lead to misinterpretations in your writing. A modifier is a word or phrase that provides additional information about another word in the sentence. When a modifier is positioned incorrectly, it can lead to ambiguous meanings. For example, "She saw the puppy running down the street with big ears" suggests that the street has big ears. Correcting this to "With big ears, she saw the puppy running down the street" clarifies the intended meaning. Paying attention to the placement of modifiers ensures that your writing remains clear and comprehensible.

The Importance of Parallel Structure

Parallel structure involves using the same grammatical form within a sentence or a series of related sentences. This technique creates rhythm and balance, making your writing more engaging. For instance, instead of saying "I enjoy reading, to write, and going for walks," you should use parallel structure: "I enjoy reading, writing, and going for walks." By maintaining a consistent grammatical form, you can enhance the clarity and flow of your ideas, making them more impactful.

Avoiding Common Confusables

Certain words in the English language are commonly confused, leading to errors that can undermine the quality of your writing. Words like "their," "there," and "they're," or "your" and "you're," are frequent offenders. Being mindful of these commonly confused words and ensuring their correct usage can prevent misunderstandings and enhance the professionalism of your writing. A simple proofreading step can help address these issues and improve overall clarity.

The Impact of Sentence Variety

While grammar is essential, sentence variety is equally important in keeping your writing engaging. Using a mix of short, long, simple, and complex sentences can create a more dynamic reading experience. Short sentences can convey urgency or clarity, while longer sentences can provide depth and detail. Striking the right balance between different sentence structures can maintain reader interest and enhance the overall flow of your writing.

Conclusion: The Art of Revision

Mastering these overlooked grammar rules can significantly transform your writing. However, the key to effective writing is not just knowing the rules but also applying them consistently. Make revision a crucial part of your writing process. As you review your work, look for opportunities to apply these grammar principles to enhance clarity, precision, and engagement. By doing so, you can elevate your writing and ensure that your ideas resonate with your readers. Remember, great writing is not just about creativity; it's also about the careful construction of language that conveys your message effectively.

Deborah Roldan-Dixon

In 1955, Bumps Blackwell flew to New Orleans, Louisiana to record Little Richard (Richard Penniman), who they hoped would become the next Nat King Cole.

During a break in a three day tepid recording session everybody headed to a nearby bar, the Dew Drop Inn for lunch, where Richard started banging out an obscene club song on the piano. “Daddy Bumps” knew he had a hit so he brought in a local songwriter to clean up the lyrics. “Tutti-Frutti, good booty” became “Tutti Frutti, all rootie.”

With only fifteen minutes left in the session, Little Richard recorded the song and coined the phrase, ‘a-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-lop-bam-boom and became a star.

I Bet This Will Blow Your Mind

 Oshani Jayawardana

American pharmacist John S. Pemberton created Coca-Cola Coca-Cola, which he initially marketed as a cure-all tonic.

Dr. John Stith Pemberton invented Coca-Cola on May 8, 1886, forever transformng the world's eating patterns. The drink's name comes from two of its original ingredients: coca leaves (a source of legal cocaine) and kola nuts (a source of caffeine). As a pharmacist from Atlanta, he had access to a wide range of chemicals and natural components. One day, he made a dark liquid and decided to take it to his shop, Jacobs' Pharmacy, to be mixed with soda water. At this time, a test was necessary. So he had the pharmacy's customers try it, and they raved about how wonderful and refreshing it was. Pemberton then began selling the precursor to today's Coca-Cola for five cents per glass as a takeout drink.

Frank M. Robinson, Dr. Pemberton's accountant, created and designed the logo that we know today, believing that the two Cs would make an attractive advertising brand. The Coca-Cola brand, inscribed in its distinctive italic type, was born with a first advertising campaign dedicated to the drink appearing in the newspaper The Atlanta Journal, asking citizens to try this "popular new take-out drink". The advertising campaign for the product debut featured on the first awnings of the shops, with the phrase "Drink Coca-Cola" prominently displayed.

However, the first year was not particularly thrilling, with only roughly nine glasses sold per day.

In 1887, John Pemberton registered the copyright for Coca-Cola Syrup and Extract with the United States Patent Office. A year later, dismayed by the failure of his invention and yet not entirely convinced - or aware - of the drink's potential, he progressively sold the company's shares to several partners. Shortly before his death, he sold the remainder of Coca-Cola to Asa G. Candler, who repurchased the shares of other shareholders until he had entire control of the corporation.

Mr. Candler founded The Coca-Cola Company with his brother, John S. Candler, Frank Robinson, John Pemberton's previous partner, and two other partners, starting with $100,000. They investd heavily in marketing, including free coupons, promotions, souvenir fans, calendars, clocks, cup holders, and so on. He went to great lengths to promote and popularize the brand. The first facility was established in Dallas, Texas, in 1894, and a year later, Candler made the famous claim that "Today Coca-Cola is drunk in every state and territory of the United States".

Under Candler's direction, syrup sales increased from 9,000 gallons in 1890 to 370,877 gallons by 1900.

Rare capture of Treme around 1935. With help of Tulane professor Richard Campanella I have identified the location of this photo. View is looking down Lafitte Ave toward the St. Louis Cathedral. If you zoom in, you can see the back of the Cathedral and the cupola of the Cabildo in Jackson Square. At the time of this photo, these homes faced the recently filled Old Basin Canal. The Lafitte Housing Project would be built in this spot 5 years later (now demolished after Katrina). Today it is part of the Lafitte Greenway. Today's view in comments.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp
  • Crabmeat
  • Chicken
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

JEFFERSON PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

6400 AIRLINE DRIVE | METAIRIE, LA

Metairie, Louisiana)—Jefferson Performing Arts’ upcoming production of School of Rock: The Musical will feature 36 local performers, half of whom are local middle and high schoolers. Several cast members will perform with real instruments live onstage at Jefferson Performing Arts Center September 13-22, 2024.

Based on the 2003 movie, School of Rock: The Musical tells the story of Dewey Finn, a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school who turns his class into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the musical features 14 new songs and songs from the original movie.

Adult principals include Nathan Parrish as Dewey Finn, Rachel Looney as Rosalie Mullins, Melissa McKenzie as Patty Di Marco and Daniel Rubio as Ned Schneebly. Youth principals include Andrew Letellier as Zack Mooneyham, Merah Benoit as Katie, Drago Han as Lawrence, August Doussan as Freddie, and Olivia Yi as Summer Hathaway.

Nathan (Dewey) and four youth performers will be playing their instruments live on stage: Merah Benoit (Katie) will play bass guitar, Drago Han (Lawrence) will play keyboards, August Doussan (Freddie) will play drums, and Andrew Letellier (Zack) will play guitar. Some of the youth musicians are making their acting debuts (August Doussan) while others are seasoned performers (such as Merah Benoit) who are learning their instruments for their roles in this show.

Brief Bios of Principal Youth Performers:

Merah Benoit’s (Katie) performance career began as a Lost Boy in the mainstage JPA production of Peter Pan at the age of 5. She went on to perform in other JPA productions including Sound of Music (Marta). She is an emerging film and TV actress with a resumé that includes working with many award-winning artists and directors including Will Smith in “Emancipation”, Renee Zellweger in “The Thing about Pam”, Jon Batiste’s music video “Freedom” and her most recent role as Emma Stone’s daughter in “Kinds of Kindness” by award-winning director Yorgos Lanthimos.

August Doussan (Freddie)  has been learning from local legendary drummers like Johnny Vidacovich and Stanton Moore, from an early age. At age 8, he joined School of Rock Metairie/New Orleans and quickly rose to become a drummer for the prestigious School of Rock House Band. His musical journey has taken him across 38 states on tour with his guitarist dad. This is his JPA debut.

Drago Han (Lawrence) is a freshman at The Willow School. This is his first JPA production. Previous roles have been Calvin in San (Le Petite Theater), Orin Scrivello in Little Shop of Horrors (Willow School), Mike Teavee in Willy Wonka Jr. (Willow School), Ugly in Honk Jr. (Saint Martin’s), and Carlos in Descendants (Saint Martin’s).

Andrew Letellier (Zack) is an 8th grader at the Waldorf School of New Orleans. When he is not rocking out on his guitar, he can be found rock climbing at the New Orleans Boulder Lounge or studying jazz piano at the Heritage School of Music. This is his JPA debut.

Playmakers Theater been producing terrific shows from Covington’s Sans Souci Forest since 1955. This Saturday we raise the curtain on our 70th season with the uproarious comedy ‘Til Beth Do Us Part, by Jones Hope Wooten, the same team that wrote 2023’s sellout hit, The Savannah Sipping Society. Directed by Derek Thrush, the madcap comedy revolves around an ambitious, conniving assistant who attempts to take over her harried boss’s business and her husband.

‘Til Beth Do Us Part is a side-splitting comic romp about careens around the strained marriage of Gibby and Suzannah, a couple who have allowed their 27-year marriage grow stale. When new assistant Beth steps in the fireworks begin. Whether you’re married, single, rethinking your divorce or currently being controlled by someone up to no good, you’re sure to enjoy this family friendly, laugh-out-loud comedy.

The cast features Joanna Parr, Shawn Patterson, Stephanie Sayles, Jen Patterson, Laura Hayes, Daniel Jenkins, and Nada Elkassouf. Assistant director is Jen Patterson.

There will be some important changes at Playmakers Theater beginning this season. Evening curtain times will be 7:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. to help patrons navigate bridge construction traffic. We will also be adding Friday evening performances. And Playmakers will once again offer reserved seating.

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.
