NATIONAL SNACK STICK DAY

On September 23, National Snack Stick Day encourages you to pack your pockets, backpacks, and desk drawers with yummy snack sticks so you can celebrate!

Primarily made with beef or pork, snack sticks harken back to the days when families preserved quantities of beef, pork, and game. Full of family tradition, they made sausage through smoking and aging. Developed generation after generation, the recipes use premium ingredients and an abundance of love.

These little portions of smoked sausage are a convenient source of protein. Take several you with on a hike or toss one in your gym bag. Snack sticks satisfy mid-morning hunger pangs and are easily shared after school, after work or anytime. With a variety of flavorful choices, snack sticks please the whole family. From sweet to spicy and everything in between, this savory snack fits a busy lifestyle to perfection.

The first spaghetti plots are coming out on what is now Invest 97L. The consensus of models is that they are east of Louisiana, which is good for us right now. We’ll watch the trends as we likely get our first track from the National Hurricane Center on Monday. This won’t be a weak storm, it’s likely to be a strong hurricane so residents between Louisiana and Florida need to stay vigilant.

Uptown, Tuesday Farmers Market in New OrleansNext Market: September 24, 2024

8 AM - 12 PM

Uptown Square

200 Broadway Street at the River

Directions and Parking Tips

The Tuesday Market is located Uptown near the Mississippi River levee at Tulane University Square (originally known Uptown Square). Find us in the northeast corner of the parking lot between Leake Avenue and Broadway Street. There's plenty of free onsite parking.

RTA Lines 57, 31, and 32 pass right by market! Click here to view route 57 or click here for route 31/32.

From I-10

From I-10/Pontchartrain Expressway, take the South Carrollton exit. If you're coming from Metairie, the ramp will merge with South Carrollton heading toward the Mississippi River; if driving from Downtown or New Orleans East, turn left at the first traffic signal (Palmetto Street) then right at South Carrollton. Go 2.2 miles to the end of South Carrollton and turn left on Leake Avenue. With the levee on your right, continue 0.8 miles; the Market will be in the parking lot to your left, just before Leake meets Broadway.

No Cash? No Problem!

All of our vendors accept cash and tokens. Swipe for tokens on-site at the orange Welcome Tent with debit, credit, or EBT SNAP.

Shop with SNAP!

Market Umbrella implements fresh food incentive programs such as Market Match, which doubles SNAP dollars spent at market for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables. Starting January 1st, 2023, market match will be unlimited, allowing us to match each EBT dollar being swiped for on-site at the orange Welcome Tent.

Between June and the end of November, certified market vendors accept Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers for both seniors and WIC participants. Market Umbrella is able to double FMNP benefits with tokens on-site at the Welcome Tent.

Woodland Biofuels

  • Canadian company Woodland Biofuels announced a $1.35 billion investment at the Port of South Louisiana to establish the largest renewable natural gas plant in the world
  • The facility will take waste wood and sugar cane (bagasse), and turn it into natural gas
  • The process will be carbon-negative, leaving less carbon in the atmosphere than before the gas was produced
  • The company expects to create 110 direct new jobs with an average annual salary of more than $90,000. Louisiana Economic Development estimates that the project will result in 259 indirect new jobs, and Woodlands Biofuels estimates that the project will create approximately 500 construction jobs
  • Partners on the project included Louisiana Economic Development, GNO, Inc., Entergy, Port of South Louisiana, CSRS, and St. John the Baptist Parish
  • A video of Woodland Biofuels CEO Greg Nuttall’s remarks on why the company chose Louisiana can be seen here: https://vimeo.com/1010600517/b65103deea

Louisiana Future Energy Center

  • The Louisiana Future Energy Center, located at the Beach at UNO, will be the physical and symbolic headquarters of the “all-of-the-above” future energy movement for Louisiana
  • On Tuesday afternoon, partners from across GNO, Inc.’s H2theFuture initiative were joined by representatives from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and energy industry leaders for a groundbreaking ceremony for the Louisiana Future Energy Center
  • The Louisiana Future Energy Center will include private offices, research space, coworking space, and event areas, creating an environment where private industry, researchers, government, and others will come together to establish Louisiana as the global center for future energy
  • The Louisiana Future Energy Center design was led by EskewDumezRipple+ and construction bids will open by the end of 2024. Construction, slated for completion in fall 2026, is progressing alongside several enhancements at The Beach campus, including renovations to the Lindy Boggs Conference Center, building upgrades, and new landscape features.

Since 2018, the State of Louisiana has seen $60B in planned investments for future energy projects - from oil, to gas, to hydrogen, to wind, and beyond - with the potential to create 27,000 high-paying new jobs.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

What is the modern equivalent of the word "haply"?

Quickly

Always

Sadly

Perhaps

"Perhaps" serves as the modern equivalent of the archaic term "haply," which means "by chance" or "possibly." Both words express a sense of uncertainty or possibility, but "perhaps" has become the preferred choice in contemporary language due to its clarity and widespread usage. While "haply" may evoke a sense of antiquity and poetic nuance, "perhaps" is versatile and easily integrated into everyday conversation. It conveys a similar meaning, inviting speculation or consideration without asserting certainty. As language evolves, "perhaps" effectively bridges the gap between historical expression and modern communication, making it a relevant choice for expressing uncertainty today.

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL GREAT AMERICAN POT PIE DAY

National Great American Pot Pie Day cooks up a toasty meal on September 23. Warm up the home with a toasty meal of pot pies to celebrate!

Pot pies typically include both a flaky top crust and a bottom crust. Occasionally, recipes omit the bottom crust. Either way, fill them with tender chicken, beef or pork, and lots of vegetables for a hearty meal. Some other delicious fillings include turkey and seafood. Traditional veggies in pot pie include potatoes, carrots, green beans, and peas. Finally, the gravy and seasonings make the pies irresistible. When they begin heating up in the oven, the family knows when dinner is ready!

This crowd-pleaser draws families together. During the cooler days, a meal of pot pie easily uses up vegetables from the garden and leftovers. It fills bellies after a long day of work, too. Several pies may be prepared ahead and frozen, too.

During the crisper evenings, gather friends and family around the table. These hot pies can be made to serve individually or as one large pie. Either way, the aroma fills the home and warms the heart.

Top 5 Fastest Songs to Reach a Billion Streams – The Hits That Conquered the Internet

music

The digital age has not only changed how we listen to music but also how we measure its success. The traditional metrics of album sales and chart positions are now complemented by the number of streams on platforms like Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music. A song reaching a billion streams is a clear testament to its popularity and appeal. In this post, we'll review the top five fastest songs to reach a billion streams, proving that they indeed conquered the internet.

"Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" is one of the fastest songs to reach a billion streams. Released in January 2017, this catchy pop tune quickly took the world by storm. Its relatable lyrics and infectious rhythm made it a favorite on playlists around the globe. It took only 153 days for "Shape of You" to reach a billion streams on Spotify, setting a new record at that time.

"Hello" by Adele

Adele's powerful ballad, "Hello", from her third studio album, "25", also made its mark in the streaming world. Released in October 2015, "Hello" reached the billion-stream milestone within 87 days on YouTube. The heart-wrenching lyrics, combined with Adele's soulful voice, made this song a global hit. The music video, featuring Adele and actor Tristan Wilds, added another layer of emotional depth, contributing to the song's rapid success.

"Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish's groundbreaking hit "Bad Guy" reached a billion streams in a staggering 111 days. Released in March 2019, this song quickly became a sensation thanks to its unique sound, quirky lyrics, and Eilish's haunting vocals. The music video, featuring Eilish in a series of surreal and visually striking scenes, also played a significant role in the song's success. "Bad Guy" not only marked Eilish's breakthrough but also demonstrated the power of streaming platforms in promoting new talent.

"Senorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello

A steamy duet between real-life couple Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, "Senorita" reached a billion streams in less than four months. Released in June 2019, this song quickly captivated listeners with its sultry lyrics and catchy melody. Mendes and Cabello's undeniable chemistry, both in the song and its music video, helped "Senorita" become one of the fastest songs to reach a billion streams.

"7 Rings" by Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande's "7 Rings", an anthem of female empowerment and wealth, reached a billion streams in just 59 days on Spotify. Released in January 2019, the song, inspired by a shopping trip Grande made with her friends, quickly found its audience. With its catchy chorus, confident lyrics, and a music video featuring Grande in a lavish party setting, "7 Rings" became a streaming powerhouse, demonstrating Grande's star power and the appeal of her pop-meets-hip-hop sound.

The success of these songs underscores the power of streaming as a measure of a song's popularity and cultural impact. They also highlight how the internet has transformed the music industry, enabling artists to reach global audiences faster than ever before. As streaming continues to grow, we can expect to see more songs join the billion-streams club, setting new records and redefining what it means to be a hit in the digital age.

September 23rd Celebrated History

1845

The first organized baseball team is named the New York Knickerbockers. Thirty-six years before, the knickerbocker word became popular for describing New Yorkers and the style of pants worn by boys – short and tucked in at the knee – when author Washington Irving wrote the satirical book A History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the end of the Dutch Dynasty. The Manhattan-based baseball team was the first to use it for a sports team. However, the name would later apply to the New York basketball team now known as the Knicks.

1848

John Curtis begins selling the first commercially available chewing gum. His product, State of Maine Pure Spruce Gum, would later be joined by flavors named American Flag, Yankee Spruce, White Mountain, Biggest and Best.

1889

Long before Mario the plumber made his appearance, Fusajiro Yamauchi founded Nintendo Koppai, later named Nintendo Company, Limited. The business originally produced playing cards. However, it also dabbled in other businesses, including a taxi company. Does anyone need an Über or a Lyft?

1879

Patent No. 219,828A is granted to Richard S. Rhodes for his invention of an audiphone. The device improved the hearing of those with conductive hearing loss and is considered the first of its kind. While the device successfully transferred sound vibrations through bone, it was cumbersome to use. However, he later modified the invention, earning him a medal in 1883 at the World’s Columbia Exhibition in Chicago.

1911

The mail officially takes flight. Earle Ovington became the first airmail pilot when he carried the mail in his Bleriot “Queen” monoplane. His route ran between Garden City Estates and the post office in Mineola, New York.

1953

Entrepreneurs Norman B. Larsen, Gordon Dawson and John B. Gregory found Rocket Chemical Company. The company produced and marketed WD-40.

1969

The film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid premieres. Directed by George Roy Hill, the movie starred Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

1984

When the Detroit Tigers win 4-1 over the New York Yankees, Sparky Anderson became the first Major League Baseball manager to win 100 games in both the National League and the American League. He started his management career with the Cincinnati Reds.

September 23rd Celebrated Birthdays

Victoria Woodhull – 1838

As a leader of the women’s suffrage movement, Woodhull was a woman of many firsts. From becoming the first woman to own a Wall Street brokerage firm to the first woman to run for president in the United States, she exemplified equal rights.

Robert Bosch – 1861

The German engineer established the engineering firm Robert Bosch GmbH. He is also credited with inventing the spark plug and magneto used in automobiles.

Mary Church Terrel – 1863

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬

On a chilly New York day in 1902, Mary Anderson, a determined woman with a sharp eye for problem-solving, watched in frustration as drivers struggled to see through their snow-covered windshields. Inspired, she invented the world’s first windshield wiper. Despite her groundbreaking design—operated from inside the car to easily clear away snow and rain—Anderson faced skepticism. Car manufacturers at the time failed to see its potential, but her invention would later become an essential safety feature for every vehicle. Though her name faded into obscurity, her impact lives on every time wipers clear a driver’s view during a storm.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp
  • Crabmeat
  • Chicken
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

PENNY DREADFULS: The REMARKABLE ROOMING-HOUSE of MADAME LE MONDE
by Tennessee Williams

It’s Tennessee Williams as you’ve never seen him as these unhinged vignettes probe the macabre corners of the human psyche. Wacky, weird, and wild desire splatters in all directions on the stage as three of Williams’ most outrageous stories come to life in a one-of-a-kind choose-your-own-adventure night of curiosities and creeps. Not for kids and not for the faint of heart!
The night of theatre will also include Williams'
Why Do You Smoke So Much, Lily & The Case Of The Crushed Petunias.

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
