NATIONAL LOVE PEOPLE DAY
On September 30, National Love People Day asks us to lift others up through the profound power of unconditional love.
The human condition is a limiting and varying thing. How and when and where we get to use it is vaguely and oddly defined. What is certain is a rollercoaster-filled life of celebrations and trials. National Love People Day tasks us to understand that unconditional love requires a dedication most human beings aren't given. But, when we wholeheartedly love our neighbors with steadfast devotion, the world is a better place. It is the practical application of "love your neighbor as yourself."
The word "unconditional" on its own is quite profound. Look at its synonyms: wholehearted, unqualified, unreserved, unlimited, unrestricted, unmitigated, unquestioning, complete, total, entire, full, absolute, unequivocal. Those words are dedicated, solid, and unwavering from their commitment to something. There are no boundaries or limitations with the word "unconditional."
Add the word love, and the power of the phrase multiplies. So, on National Love People Day, offer kindness and care to the people in your community.

We will be watching the Gulf of Mexico later this week for tropical development. Some good news is that it is not a guarantee as the chance still sits at a 50% chance for development by the end of this week. We'll be watching a large area of tropical moisture move north through the middle of the week. This moisture will likely reach the northern Gulf Coast by Thursday. That's when a weak cool front moves in and begins to push the moisture slowly back to the south. With the tropical moisture all trapped in the Gulf we could begin to see multiple areas of low pressure form by this weekend and a depression or tropical storm could begin to form. The steering currents aren't as clear, but right now models have backed off anything significant. While that is a good thing, we still need to monitor closely as more questions remain than answers.
In the open Atlantic Ocean, there are several other storms happening now though they will stay out in the open ocean and bring no impacts to any land areas.

Directions and Parking Tips
The Tuesday Market is located Uptown near the Mississippi River levee at Tulane University Square (originally known Uptown Square). Find us in the northeast corner of the parking lot between Leake Avenue and Broadway Street. There's plenty of free onsite parking.
RTA Lines 57, 31, and 32 pass right by market! Click here to view route 57 or click here for route 31/32.

From I-10/Pontchartrain Expressway, take the South Carrollton exit. If you're coming from Metairie, the ramp will merge with South Carrollton heading toward the Mississippi River; if driving from Downtown or New Orleans East, turn left at the first traffic signal (Palmetto Street) then right at South Carrollton. Go 2.2 miles to the end of South Carrollton and turn left on Leake Avenue. With the levee on your right, continue 0.8 miles; the Market will be in the parking lot to your left, just before Leake meets Broadway.

City of New Orleans Announces New Dates to Register to Become Eligible to Participate in Set-Aside Program
NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans recently announced the launch of the Set-Aside Program to enhance opportunities for disadvantaged business enterprises (DBEs). The Set-Aside Program allows the City of New Orleans to allocate up to 25 percent of its contracts for specific procurement of goods, services, and construction work to socially and economically disadvantaged businesses. This initiative ensures that certified DBEs can compete for designated contracts among themselves, rather than against larger or prime contractors.
The Set-Aside Program aims to catalyze long-term growth and energize local businesses through building wealth for minority entrepreneurs and small businesses. The program also levels the playing field for DBE owners who wish to do business with the City of New Orleans, allowing them to have a fair chance.
Currently, there are 2,105 DBEs that have obtained their certification. Information regarding the Set-Aside Program has been disseminated via email to all certified DBEs. However, only a fraction have registered on the City’s BRASS database, the supplier portal that allows vendors to receive solicitations, upload invoices, set up direct deposit, and view and print payment information. The criteria to participate include previous establishment as a certified DBE and BRASS registration through the City's supplier portal.
For assistance with BRASS registration, vendors can call the Bureau of Purchasing at (504) 658-1550. In addition, staff will be on hand to assist City certified DBEs with registering on the BRASS supplier portal on the following dates:

The Joan of Arc Project (aka Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc) held their fifth annual Joan of Art contest in partnership with Ariodante Contemporary Art & Craft Gallery this month. The curated show was opened on Saturday, September 7, when contest winners were selected and announced as part of the Arts District New Orleans First Saturday’s gallery opening night celebration. Three local judges selected the contest winners, and a selection of additional artworks submitted were invited to become part of the Joan of Art Show, curated by Ariodante owners Laurie Reed and Deyette Danford.
This year’s contest judges were: Deyette Danford, co-owner of Ariodante Gallery; Chris Wiseman, Executive Director, Catholic Cultural Center of New Orleans; and Mamie Gasperecz, a longtime nonprofit arts, culture, and education leader and French Quarter preservationist, who now serves as Vice President for Business Affairs at University of New Orleans.

- “St. Joan of Arc, with St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret” by Bridget Redman of River Ridge, Louisiana
The art contest is announced by Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc each springtime with a summer deadline, in anticipation of a September exhibit. All the selected artworks are on display in main gallery of Ariodante Contemporary Art & Craft Gallery at 535 Julia Street, New Orleans, from September 1-30, 2024.
“This contest gives us an opportunity to meet new artists and to collaborate with a unique arts organization, The Joan of Arc Project. It is a win/win for all of us to build an annual show around this theme. The show continues to grow each year, and some of the artists who participate in this show end up selling other pieces at Ariodante year-round,” said Reed.

(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL HOT MULLED CIDER DAY
On September 30, National Hot Mulled Cider Day warms our homes with the scent of cinnamon, nutmeg, and apple.
Fall welcomes toasty mugs of mulled cider to wrap our chilled hands around. Such a cozy way to spend an evening, sipping a tart, spiced beverage on a chilly evening while gazing at trees ablaze in crimson, gold, and orange. It is the perfect time to celebrate this holiday and enjoy this delightful drink.
Mulled cider is a traditional fall and winter drink made by heating cider to almost boiling and adding cinnamon, orange peel, nutmeg, cloves, and other spices and then simmering it. Just the scent of it steeping on the stove will warm the home and lift the spirits of everyone in it.

Walk on the Wild Side
Among the lesser known movies set in New Orleans is the 1962 drama Walk on the Wild Side starring Laurence Harvey, Capucine, Jane Fonda, Anne Baxter, and Barbara Stanwyck. It was adapted from Nelson Algren’s 1956 novel of the same name. The majority of the film was shot in New Orleans.
To the surprise of many, the studio received the approval of the censors for its release. Considering that the film delves into the world of commercial prostitution where Barbara Stanwyck portrays the bordello madame and both Capucine and Jane Fonda portray prostitutes. For all of its faults, the film’s score by Elmer Bernstein was memorable, as was the title song with music by Bernstein and lyrics by Mack David.

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street
by: OffBeat Staff
The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.
Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.
On October 6, Nickel-A-Dance will host Duke Heitger and The Crescent City Joymakers. Heitger, a classic jazz trumpeter known for his virtuosity, has performed internationally and is a long-standing performer on the Steamboat Natchez. His band is a staple of Nickel-A-Dance and promises a night of spirited traditional jazz.
Next, on October 13, Mark Braud and His Sunday Night All-Stars will take the stage. Braud, part of the musical Brunious and Santiago families, has been a fixture in the New Orleans jazz scene since his youth. He has performed with Harry Connick Jr., Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and many other notable artists. His band will bring a blend of traditional jazz and contemporary flair to the series.
Lars Edegran and The Palm Court Jazz All-Stars are set to perform on October 20. Edegran, originally from Sweden, has been a New Orleans resident since 1966 and is known for his versatility on piano, guitar, and banjo. He has worked with jazz greats like Earl Hines and George Lewis, and his band will showcase the best of New Orleans traditional jazz.
The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

Over 30 entertainment, food, craft, and health vendors participating in the October 12 Hispanic cultural event at UHC
New Orleans– West Bank Hispanic Heritage Festival organizers announced today that over 30 vendors will participate in this year’s inaugural event to bring a day of vibrant music, diverse culinary offerings, and community celebrations to the University of Holy Cross (UHC) campus in Algiers on October 12, 2024, from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.
This year’s festival, free and open to the public, will have offerings for everyone including a full lineup of music, entertainment for adults and kids, and a large community health event. From live performances to delicious food, the festival is designed to honor Hispanic heritage in an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome.
“Our mission is to bring together people from all backgrounds throughout the city,” said Stephanie Davi McNeely, Chair of the West Bank Hispanic Heritage Festival and the First Lady of the University of Holy Cross. “The festival highlights the diversity of our Hispanic culture through music, food, art and education in a fun, family-friendly and free environment, right in the heart of the UHC campus.”
Live entertainment will keep the crowd energized throughout the day, with performances on the Redmann Law Stage by:
- La Tran-K Band – An energetic band that will keep the festivities lively with their dynamic tunes.
- Grupo Sensación – Bringing traditional and contemporary Latin sounds that will keep the crowd dancing.
- Fermin Ceballos - Performing a mix of modern and traditional Hispanic music.
- Mariachi Jalisco – Enjoy the classic mariachi tunes that celebrate the heart of Hispanic music.
- Ballet Folklórico Vive Mi Tierra – Traditional Mexican folk dance performances showcasing vibrant costumes and storytelling through movement.
- Dile Que NOLA – A local favorite bringing their unique Latin fusion sounds to the stage.
- ZUMBA with Sonia G Fitness – An energizing Zumba session to get everyone moving.
The Law Office of John Redmann, LLC serves many in the Hispanic community, and their sponsorship of the festival stage is part of their commitment to celebrating the many cultures in our area.
Additionally, a diverse lineup of food vendors and food trucks will offer a taste of authentic Hispanic and local flavors. Festival-goers can indulge in dishes from:
- Food Vendors: Anita’s Quesabirrias, Casita Jasmyn, Chick Fil A, Coop’s Burgers, El Macho Grill, Curramba La Bella Colombian Food, Hokena’s Cuisine, La Chilanga, Malkriados Kitchen, Mexi-pops by Angie, Mimas Peruvian Dessert, Mimi’s Sweets & Treats, Piece of Kookie, Life Gave Lemons Lemonade, Pistachio Coffee, The Creative Grind, and Waska.
- Food Trucks: MoFries, Kona Ice of the Crescent City, Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee of Jefferson, Wolf's Burger Truck, and ZoraChristina Catering & Food Truck.
The festival also will feature a range of other vendors offering everything from unique accessories to skincare products. Alongside the entertainment, the West Bank Hispanic Heritage Festival will also host a community health event, offering resources and information to promote wellness among attendees. The Beignet Fest Sensory Activation Vehicle will also make an appearance, providing a safe and welcoming space to step away from the crowds.
“Our UHC community is approximately 12 percent Hispanic, and we are excited to showcase not only the strong educational programs and welcoming campus environment that UHC offers, but also hope attendees are able to discover something new about the Hispanic culture that plays such an important role in our community,” said Dr. Stanton McNeely, president of the University of Holy Cross.
