Two important deadlines are quickly approaching:
Tax Day
and the
2020
Census deadline
.
Federal and state taxes are due TOMORROW. Taxes must be filed or paid by 11:59 p.m. if you’re filing online. If you’re mailing your taxes, they must be postmarked by the end of business tomorrow.
|
|
|
If you still need more time to file your taxes, you can file a
federal
and
state
extension. However, please note that this does not extend the deadline for you to PAY your taxes. If you expect that you will owe, you must pay an estimated amount of what you owe by tomorrow’s deadline.
Another important deadline that is approaching is the date to complete your response to the 2020 Census. You can respond
online
,
by phone at 844-330-2020, or by mail by October 31. Responding to the Census is vital to ensuring our community gets the funding it deserves and ensuring that our voices are heard in Congress. Many communities in Chicago are lagging behind in their response rates, so let’s show up for our neighbors and ourselves by getting it done. See below for more information.

It’s not too late to complete your 2020 Census! You can complete your questionnaire
online,
by phone or by mail.
If you’re responding online, you must complete the census in one sitting, as you are unable to save your progress. You should be counted where you were living for the majority of the time as of April 1, 2020. Please note that if someone was staying with you temporarily on April 1 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they should be counted where they usually live. For example, if college students usually live in student housing, the college will count them.
The 2020 Census will determine representation at the city, state and federal levels for the next 10 years. It will also determine the amount of funding the state and city will receive for:
- Schools
- Hospitals
- Community and mental health care services
- Public transportation
- Infrastructure improvements
- Head Start and early childhood education
- SNAP and financial assistance for low-income residents
- Housing assistance
The State of Illinois will lose $35 billion for every 1% of the population that doesn’t respond to the Census. As our state and city recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and address systemic racism, we need to make sure that we get this money to help our communities.
Even if you did not receive an invitation to respond from the Census Bureau, you may respond online at
2020census.gov
or through any of these toll-free phone numbers:
- English: 844-330-2020
- Spanish: 844-468-2020
- TDD: 844-467-2020
- Mandarin: 844-391-2020
- Cantonese: 844-398-2020
- Polish: 844-479-2020
- Arabic: 844-416-2020
