You may have seen headlines about the U.S. penny slowly leaving circulation. Here’s what’s changing and what it means for your everyday banking.
Why is this happening?
Pennies are used less often and now cost more to produce than their value. Because of that, new pennies are no longer being made and existing ones will gradually cycle out over time.
Can you still use pennies?
Yes. Pennies are still legal tender. You can continue to use them for purchases or bring them to the Credit Union to deposit into your account.
What changes when paying with cash?
As pennies become less common, some cash purchases may round to the nearest five cents:
- Totals ending in 1 or 2 cents round down
- Totals ending in 3 or 4 cents round up
- Totals ending in 6 or 7 cents round down
- Totals ending in 8 or 9 cents round up
This applies only to cash transactions. Debit cards, credit cards, checks, and digital payments are not affected.
