Preparing for the Future

Today is July 19th as I write this article for the August edition of MoneyMoves - for the future. During the publishing date I will be on retreat so I want to be prepared - "on-time" - for August. My actions led to me wondering about the myriad ways we prepare for the future - health, money, death, celebrations, athletic competitions (the Olympics!), and vacations to name a few. I'm guessing there is no topic void of future preparations.  For me, the most significant noticing in this act of preparing is exhaustion.  My body feels lethargic, my mind wanders, and there is a loose quality of chaos. Instead of an easy flow of insights, I am struggling to write anything that might be of interest or service. What's this about?

Exhaustion often accompanies preparing for the future. Think about it. The future can only be held with hope or fear, anticipation or worry. Equanimity is present here and now. And yet, we continually prepare for future events. Contrast the future to here and now. Wow. Energy comes alive presencing this moment. And the next, and the next.

Given this direct experience, learning in public with you, I offer a poem from one of my favorite artists, David Whyte. Allow this to be enough, for now. May your August be filled with exquisite moments of now.

By David Whyte

Enough. These few words are enough.

If not these words, this breath.

If not this breath, this sitting here.

This opening to the life

we have refused

again and again

until now.

Until now

5-Minute TRY It

Computer Screen Glaze...

Stand Up!

Minute one:  Acknowledge with grace the amount of time you sit in front of a computer screen working, or even playing, just seated in your chair.  Notice your energy level. Is it low or high, productive or unproductive?

Minute two:   Stand up and place your attention on your feet. Feel the soles of your feet touching the ground. Root your feet down into the earth. Feel the sensations at the point of contact and begin to bring the energy up through your feet into your lower legs.

Minute three:  Continue to bring earth's energy up through your legs. As the energy rises, begin to place your weight in one foot while still staying connected with both feet. Allow your gaze to be soft - in the distance if you have a window - relaxing your eyes. Allow your arms to hang gently by your side.

Minute four:  Keeping your gaze soft, arms hanging, shift your weight to the other foot while staying connected with both. Notice your powerful leg rooted and holding you strong and steady.

Minute five:  Shift your weight so that it is evenly distributed with both feet. Allow nourishing energy to continue to rise through your feet into your legs and up through your torso.

Complete your practice by noticing your energy level. What's same/different from 5 minutes ago?

Financial Fun

... is there such a thing?

It is summer and the old song Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer is playing in my mind. Well, it arose when I thought about summer and summer fun. And one thought led to another which led to an inner longing I have held for far too many years. Perhaps it is my "7" on the enneagram that shines forth here - but I can't help believing fervently that if the perspective on money could shift from fear to fun, the pains and struggles around money and finances would shift dramatically.

Be Moved

For most of life, nothing wonderful happens. If you don't enjoy getting up and working and finishing your work and sitting down to a meal with family or friends, then the chances are that you're not going to be very happy. If someone bases his happiness or unhappiness on major events like a great new job, huge amounts of money, a flawlessly happy marriage or a trip to Paris, that person isn't going to be happy much of the time. If, on the other hand, happiness depends on a good breakfast, flowers in the yard, a drink or a nap, then we are more likely to live with quite a bit of happiness.
