The Monroe County Achievement Center has partnered with the Dorm Parents to provide food and supplies for our students as often as needed. This brand-new food pantry opened this week at MCAC, and it will be stocked and restocked by the Dorm Parents free of charge! They have also set up food pantries in two other schools in our district: KBS and HES. MCAC would like to offer a special thanks to the Dorm Parents for their support, and to Dr. Jessica Evans for providing backpacks for our students to transport items to their homes. Students are welcome to shop in the MCAC pantry before and after school.

While the items in the pantry are FREE, there are still costs involved in running the Dorm Parents organization. The funds donated to the Dorm Parents program will be used to purchase additional vans to transport items to the schools, fuel for vans, payment for distribution employees and cost for storage to maintain the items and supplies for the Dorm Parents Program. If you'd like to support the program, check out the Dorm Parents on social media or make a donation by clicking here.

Our Monroe County bands will have a week of holiday performances in December. We'll begin with the Mary Persons High School Band on December 4 at 6:30 p.m. Then, on December 6, enjoy the sounds of the Monroe County Middle School Band. That show will start at 6 p.m. We'll close out the week on December 7th with our elementary school band. They will take the stage at 6:30 p.m.

Mary Persons High School students will have an international travel opportunity

For the first time since 2018, Mary Persons High School students will have an international travel opportunity. Our Global Classroom initiative has taken students to Italy, Greece, Spain, France, the British Isles, Costa Rica, and even Australia. Now we are back and ready to travel to South America to explore the wonders of Peru, including Machu Picchu, the amazing Lost City of the Incas high in the Andes mountains. We will also visit Lima and Cuzco, the Sacred Valley, and the floating islands of Lake Titicaca. This 9-day adventure will be in the summer of 2025 and is open to all current 8th through 11th grade students and their families. We will have an informational meeting Dec. 5th at 5 pm in the Media Center on the main campus at Mary Persons. We’re excited to tell you more about the trip we’re planning with EF Tours, our educational travel partner. Please be sure to register for this info session (even if you are not able to attend the meeting but would like more information) using this link: MPHS Peru Trip 2025.

Helping students navigate their feelings through visuals

Visual Aids for Identifying & Processing Emotions in Students

Kids aren’t born knowing how to identify and express their feelings. Just like reading or riding a bike, it’s something they need to learn how to do and practice over time. Children's Healthcare of Atlanta has developed visuals for students to use to help identify and process their own emotions. Click here to access the visual charts.
