The "little Meursault" of the Cote Chalonnaise

2009 Chateau de Cary Potet Montagny

Greetings!

We started to worry when our GPS told us the road we were driving on didn't really exist. This less-traveled road was supposed to take us to Montagny, where we had heard there was extraordinary white Burgundy to be found, but we didn't think we'd be dodging cows or streams to get there.

potet_montagny_burgundy_labelMontagny in the Cote Chalonnaise is a treasure trove for white wine; it's not called little Meursault for nothing. The regions' lovely rolling hills (and mysterious back roads) are home to perfect, small vineyards with terroir chops that many a Cote d'Or plot would be impressed with. Yet the rub is because Montagny is so off the beaten path (or any path) what you find when you do arrive is not only gorgeous wine and dedicated winemakers but more than reasonable prices. That's why we took a gamble on the GPS, and we won. (The rental car was another story.)

These two wines represent the ying and yang of Montagny white Burgundy, one chiseled and stony, the other plush and savory. Together they are a great example of the quality of Montagny and certainly of the fact that there is still value to be found in Burgundy -- if you know where to look. Enjoy a great case discount on a half or full case purchase; and free shipping on a half-case!

"Bassets" is white Burgundy in a cooler, more chiseled style; this vineyard's mineral terroir contributes a stony finish and flavors that are more delineated and energetic. Aromas suggest pear skin, white fruits and wildflowers; the mouth is medium-bodied and very fresh, lots of citrus and fresh white fruits.

"Reculerons" takes it up a notch in concentration and weight; this is Montagny with a more pronounced Meursault character, but with a stony middle and plenty of edge. This south-facing vineyard sits in a natural amphitheater, which keeps vines cozy and gives a wine with more curves, more seductive aromas. Suggestions of candied lemons, cooked white fruits and herbs on the nose; the mouth is very juicy, with yellow and white fruits, hints of mango and sweet/tart pineapple, and lots of citrus energy.

"As soon as you can, turn around"
There is nothing more annoying than a GPS narrator who just won't let you explore. Our poor Garmin almost blew a gasket on our way to Montagny, trying to convince us that the road we were on (and the cows we were waving at) really weren't there.

Perhaps driving through that field of grain on that muddy dirt road (in the middle of rain storm) wasn't the best idea, but we were on a mission from the gods of Burgundy, and Montagny was out there, somewhere, we knew.

While Montagny doesn't have much of the pomp and circumstance of Meursault, there is a lot that is similar between these two villages when it comes to white Burgundy. It is widely held that Montagny white Burgundy is some of the noblest white wines in the Cote Chalonnaise, with fine floral and mineral expression, with a supple, almost saturated (golden, like Meursault) character that gives them weight on the tongue. There's not a lot of wine as there's not a lot of vineyards; but artisans like the Potet family have for generations been dedicated to crafting the best Montagny can give.

We were instantly captivated by these wines. "Bassets" is a more precise wine, perhaps more Puligny than Meursault -- with herbal notes in its perfumes, good stony edges and sweet white fruit flavors. "Reculerons" turns it up in savory fruit and seductiveness, with plenty of yellow fruits and tropical notes, still with a great mineral/floral personality. They are perfect wines for near-term enjoyment (3-5 years).
